Small Shul. Large Community.

Congregation Shaarey Tikvah is a close-knit, vibrant Conservative synagogue located in Beachwood, Ohio. Founded in 1940 by German Jewish refugees, Shaarey Tikvah means Gates of Hope. Today, our congregation includes 250 families and individuals, including young families with children, single adults, empty nesters and seniors. We welcome lifelong Clevelanders and recent transplants.

Our community is warm, welcoming and engaged in the life of our shul. Our size fosters connections and close relationships among members, including across generations. Many members consider the congregation as an extended family. We are passionate about Judaism. We strive to build and sustain a caring, vibrant and engaged community committed to God, Torah and each other.

At Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, we infuse these values in everything we do: • Principles and values of modern, egalitarian, Conservative Judaism • Respect for tradition with openness to innovation • Meaningful worship through prayer, ritual and music

• Lay leader involvement in all aspects of community life • Intergenerational engagement • Integrating children and young adults into synagogue life • Supportive and involved rabbinical care and spiritual guidance • Deep and meaningful outreach and support for one another • Lifelong learning and engagement with Judaism • Acceptance and inclusion of Jews of all backgrounds • Creating a lasting community for future generations

We are grateful to have you as a part of our community! Members of our congregation are encouraged to be actively engaged in helping to fulfill our mission by giving of their time, talent and treasure. We offer many opportunities to be engaged in the life of the synagogue – from reading Torah and leading services, to organizing events and serving on committees. We hope you enjoy this annual report as a highlight of everything we’ve accomplished together this past year!

Dear Friends,

Barukh shehekhiyanu v’kiyimanu v’higiyanu lazman hazeh! Blessed is the one who gave us life, sustained us, and brought us to this moment. Our sacred community has come together, once again, to celebrate the completion of another year of holy work! When one finishes studying a tractate of Talmud they recite, hadran alakh v’hadrakh alan, or we will return to you and you will return to us. I am sure that we will revisit the wisdom we have gleaned from this year. Shaarey Tikvah, its leaders and its members, have collectively experienced a great deal this year. We have mourned and we have celebrated together. We have been challenged and we have grown together. We have poured our hearts and souls out to God and opened ourselves up the many miracles around us. This past year now becomes part of our 78 year history. Now it is time to set it aside and move onward.

Under the loving and dedicated leadership of our President, Jeff Epstein, and our Board of Directors, we have much to look forward to in the coming year. I am excited to work with Cantor Beth Shlossberg to plan for the High Holy Day season. I look forward to joining with our Education Va’ad to firm up our vision for our educational offerings this coming year. I hope that we will use our Strategic Plan Refresh as a tool to help realize some of our community’s dreams in the areas of tefillah, membership, and fundraising.

Though these areas of opportunity are exciting, I once again find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the core values that we at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah share. I am grateful for the ways we care deeply for one another, for our optimism, and for our dedication to finding holy sparks in every task that lays before us. May we go from strength to strength.

Bivracha,Rabbi Scott B. Roland

Annual Report

2017-2018

Dear Friends,

Congregation Shaarey Tikvah is a truly amazing place. Our davening has energy and passion. Our members are engaged. Our programming is inspirational, creative, educational, and innovative. Our simchas are joyous community events. Our staff is hard working, wise, and dedicated. Our volunteers….. our volunteers are simply amazing, tenacious, selfless, and hard working.

I’ve been humbled and honored to serve as CST’s president for the past year. We are concluding a fiscal year in which we had many successes – innovative Shabbat programming for adults (Sonic Ark) and kids (Pajama Neshama), a moving farewell to Cantor Paller, amazing Purim and OkTORAHfest celebrations, and the debut of our new Entrees & Insights Fundraiser to name a few. We’ve also been quite focused at the board level on planning for our future, with considerable time spent on strategic planning, working with a consultant on our branding, addressing staff transitions and planning for our musical future. The investment by our leadership in such a wide array of planning processes will yield dividends for the future of our incredible kehilla.

It is that future that I am focused on, along with our staff and board leadership. Moving forward with Rabbi Roland’s compelling vision for “Kosher Innovation” of our worship experience. Delivering new programming and outreach that engages our membership more deeply. Bringing music even deeper into the core of our congregation. And making this place that we all love dearly even better. I look forward to continuing this holy work and moving forward with all of you together.

B’shalom, Jeff EpsteinCST Board President

Committees & Programs

Worship Committee

The Worship Committee has had a relatively quiet year, as significant time and effort has been expended in coordinating service leaders in the aftermath of Cantor Paller’s retirement. The committee supported a family-oriented Channukah celebration, including community candle lighting, songs, and short story discussion.

We have begun “Gesher Minyan on the Move,” meeting in a different congregant’s home the first Wednesday evening of every month, for brief davening, a brief d’var Torah, and a light nosh. Those who have attended have enjoyed the chance to be together in each others’ homes mid-week, sharing a few moments of learning and spirituality.

We continue to work on ways to enhance the flow of honorees on and off the bima on Shabbat morning. The committee remains available to assist Rabbi Roland in discussing ritual matters and holiday observance, and we are always open to participation from anyone in the congregation with ideas about ways to make our worship inviting, meaningful, and fulfilling.

David Hutt, Chair

Men’s Club

Men’s Club continues to grow in stature within the synagogue as well as within the Greater Cleveland community. We have always supported the CST congregation through programs, funding and manpower!

• Sunday Morning Breakfast Speaker Series • Passover Fund generating over $2,000 • “3G” Three Generational programming • Israel Scholarship Fund • Veteran flag placement at Zion Memorial • Joint ventures with our Conservative Shul counterparts

Sisterhood

The change in leadership this past year brought a new perspective as a survey was circulated to find out the preferences for programming from our members, new and old. We will be acting on the many suggestions we had for improvements and accelerating plans for bringing back some of the programs our members have missed. We look forward to working with you on future projects. Thanks for a great year!

• Sisterhood Shabbat • Sponsored Lunch and Learn • Sukkot Luncheon • Cooking/Baking for Cantor’s Concert • Women’s Night Out • Co-sponsored Meshuganotes Concert • Short Story Nights

Special thanks to Toby Rosenberg for organizing all the kitchen-related activities; to Nina Rosner and Lois Novikoff for coordinating the Short Story Nights, and to Alyson Fieldman, Laurie Billowitz, Roberta Kaplan and Shari Goldberg who so willingly opened their homes for our events.

Membership Committee

The membership committee had a meaningful year working to recruit and retain members for the Kehilah. One of the main efforts of this year have been focussed on trying to identify why people connect with Shaarey Tikvah and developing ways to smooth paths to engagement. One such effort involved the development of a Talents and Interest Bank that will help to guide programming efforts in the future. As an example, this effort has been able to match congregants with possible committees on which they may be interested in serving. Additionally, other committees have been able to use the survey results to help guide programming decisions that match with the interests of the Kehillah. The membership committee has also been involved in refreshing the strategic plan as it relates to membership. We look forward to employing these new tactics to help ensure the continued strength of CST. Lastly, it has been a great joy to continue to the most basic work of the committee. That is to build, develop, and maintain relationships across the kehillah.

It is with great joy that we welcome the members that have joined over the last year:

Face to Face Holocaust Education Program

Completing its 24th year, the Face to Face program is still going strong! Students from all over Northeast Ohio, come to learn about Judaism and the lessons of the Holocaust. They interact with docents, Jewish educators and Survivors, taking away, in many cases, their first experience in a synagogue and their life-long memory of hearing a Survivor’s story… face to face.

HIGHLIGHTS:• Thirty four sessions educating 2,726 middle and high school students as well as 200 teachers and parent chaperones• Partnering with the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 55 social workers, nurses, and caregivers were educated in working with Holocaust survivors. HWR provided CEUs to the nurses and social workers in attendance. • Welcomed our 50,000th student in October. • Added: 2 new Judaism Presenters; 4 new docents; 3 new Holocaust survivor speakers; 3 new schools • Developed and initiated an online teacher evaluation survey to replace paper evaluations• Provided scholarships in the form of waived or reduced student fees for seven schools, thereby helping 525 students attend Face to Face who would not otherwise be able to attend.

The Cantor’s Cabaret: A Musical L’Hitraot!

Cantor Gary Paller performed on Sunday, December 3, 2017 for an adoring audience of two hundred plus Shaarey Tikvah congregants and friends. Preparing for weeks, Cantor Paller invited his long-time friend and colleague, Cantor Kathy Sebo, to sing duets, and his choir director and friend, Peter Clausen, to accompany him through a list of 35 songs – all Gary’s favorites. Jackie Wood and Susan Drake played flutes while everyone enjoyed food, drink and beautiful music.

The Cantor Gary D. Paller Music Fund was established to provide funds for music programs, lectures and learning. Shaarey Tikvah is committed to remaining a musical community. This endowment fund will build to support those efforts. Donations will be accepted anytime through the Office.

2017-2018A Celebration of Cantor Gary Paller

CST’s Cantor of 18 years, Cantor Gary Paller, retired at the end of 2017.

Cantor Paller served our congregation with grace, sharing his beautiful voice, passion for music, and kindnesses too many to mention. Our kehillah will miss our unique connection with Cantor Paller, the special moments in which our prayers and voices were elevated together in song .

We are extremely grateful to Cantor Paller for his dedicated service to our community, and wish him all the best in his retirement.
