The best retirement gift ever . . . FBI agent Troy Sowers recently retired after 22 years of service. He expected nothing more than “doughnuts and coffee” at his retirement party. But his colleagues arranged something much bigger. When Sowers was a rookie agent working in Seattle, he and police were called when a baby was kidnapped from a Washington hospital by a woman impersonating a nurse. The kidnapper was soon apprehended, and Sowers managed to convince her to lead him to the baby. She had left the infant in a box next to a restaurant dumpster. Sowers rushed to the restau-rant hoping the baby was still alive when they found him. “We knew [the baby] had been out there for several hours. When I picked him up, he was not crying, but just nuzzled right into my neck and I knew he was fine.” The medical crew arrived shortly and took the baby away. A senior agent told rookie Sowers, “Troy, I’ve got to tell you, something like that — you’ll never do anything better than that.” The case stuck with Sowers and, over the years, he won-dered what had happened to the child he rescued. At his retirement, he found out. His fellow agents tracked down the “baby” — now 22 years old — and invited him to the retirement party. And so, FBI Agent Troy Sowers was reunited with Stewart Rembert, now a corporal in the United States Ma-rine Corps. “My parents wanted me to give you a hug,” Rembert told the stunned FBI agent. “Thank you for giving me an opportunity to have a life. “It’s crazy to think that without his efforts, I wouldn’t even be here today. I wouldn’t be a Marine. My family wouldn’t be the same . . . I’m just super excited and honored to meet this man today,” Corporal Rembert said. Agent Sowers said the reunion was “probably one of the best surprises I’ve ever had.” “I’m glad [to see] what you’ve done with your life,” he told Rembert. “Pass it on.”

Mustard-seed faith enables us to do many more im-portant things than uprooting mulberry trees. Such faith is the unshakable conviction that every ordinary act of selfless kind-ness can re-create and transform; that the smallest act of for-giveness can lift up and heal; that the simplest act of compas-sion, done in faith and trust in God’s providence, can transform our world in the justice and peace of God. Agent Sowers’ dedi-cation, compassion and empathy resulted in the blossoming of a great “mulberry” in the life of the child he fought to save. Christ calls us to em-brace such “mustard seed” faith: to believe that whatever generosity and kindness we are capable of, done in the spirit of Gospel reconciliation, justice and peace, will one day yield the harvest that is the reign of God.

Dear Parishioners, October brings us the month of the Rosary. Maybe this wonderful form of prayer is a daily part of your routine; maybe you’ve not done it in a long time.

Wherever we are, it’s a great form of prayer. It inspires, strengthens, consoles and calms. It’s great to use while: walking, sitting, sweeping, trying to sleep or driving. It’s an all-purpose, all-occasion prayer that works well even for busy people. It’s very powerful too.

I heard at the joint Finance Council meeting last week that there are strong rumors surfacing about us closing churches, particularly St. Felix. At a staff meeting several days later, it was brought to my attention that the reason why these rumors persist is that at the time of the announcement last year, we were told how many church buildings we were to keep. What you don’t know is that the Diocese has since backed off on that decree. It’s up to US to determine how many churches we need and can financially support. I’ve neglected to share that with you. I’ve been working from that principle but didn’t adequately communicate it to you. Naturally, fear and rumors will grow. Sorry for my lapse. But here’s the trick: How many churches do we need and can support?- that depends on YOU! We need people in the pews and money coming in. When people quit giving and stop coming, they are only going to bring about the very reality they fear will happen. I hope this makes sense. I do not want to close a church but we ALL must work together on this. Already, our parishes are working together and helping one another. This can really be something good. Please work for our union, not against it – no one can stand alone.

The Fr. Marcus O’Brien dinner is next Sunday, October 13. It’s a great fundraiser for Catholic Charities in Beaver County and also a celebration of the great volunteer spirit that fills the Catholic Church in Beaver County. Congratulations to this year’s awardees: Lou Lombardo (St. Cecilia), Keith Jenkins (St. Felix), Sue Bauer (Holy Family) and Mike Deelo (Saints Peter and Paul). Call a parish office for tickets.

The Fall Festival at Saints Peter and Paul School is next weekend October 11-13. (You will find more information elsewhere in the bulletin). Not only is this an important fundraiser for the school, it is a fun and not-too-expensive activity for families. The Fish Fry Friday night will be very good, too.

Saturday, October 12, there is a Rosary Crusade taking place at Noon on Third Street in front of Saints Peter and Paul Church. Everyone is encour-aged to attend and take part in this public witness. Fr. Bob

Make a joyful noise as part of a Bell Choir for our grouping of parishes

The gift of music is a treasure to be shared. Participating in an ensem-ble like a bell choir is spiritually and emotionally rewarding. We are seeking volunteers from all 4 parishes in our grouping who would like to learn to become a handbell ringer. For anyone who has a sense of rhythm, and would enjoy synchronizing with others in a small group (of 8 ringers for 2 octaves of handbells), you are invited to try it out and patiently be trained. The first rehearsal will be on Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00pm in Sts. Peter & Paul Church. The weeknight might change for following practice sessions, which will occur about every other week. Also, we can hold intermittent rehearsals at St. Cecilia, St. Felix and Holy Family churches during the year. All ages from 6th grade to adult are welcome. Please call Ken Hand, music director of Sts. Peter & Paul parish, at 724-544-4337 or email him at [email protected] if you are interested and/or have any questions.
