Taylor said he would like to someday be the police chief in his homeown, where he can “really make a difference.” Prescott would either like to join the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office or perhaps even become a U.S. Marshal. Deputy Sheriff Sonya Matthews of the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office in Washington is this year’s recipient of the Law Enforcement Explorer Post Advisor Award. Deputy Matthews started her own career as a Cadet with the Kitsap County Cadet-Explorer Post over 15 years ago, and has remained very active with the program ever since. Deputy Matthews served as a cadet-explorer from 1991 through 1994, in which time she held the positions of cadet, cadet-sergeant and post treasurer. Prior to being commissioned as a full-time deputy, Deputy Matthews was a reserve deputy. During this time she also held several key positions, including squad leader, association secretary, and association president. She was recognized as Reserve Deputy of the Year in 2001. Because of her interest in the cadet-explorer program, while still on reserve duty she volunteered to become post advisor. In 2005, Deputy Matthews was selected as the cadet-explorer coordinator/advisor and she has held the position since then. In this position, she supervises four other cadet advisors. She coordinates the roles of these other advisors and is responsible for their squad assignments. She maintains communication with the community and acts as the public relations contact for the post. She also serves on selection and promotion boards, writes tests and quizzes for the cadet, and conducts and supervises inspections. Deputy Matthews donates many hours of her own time to the program, while balancing her other responsibilities as a full-time Deputy Sheriff, and a wife and mother. In 2007, Deputy Matthews led the post to the recognition as the Washington State Law Enforcement Explorer Post of the Year. With her guidance, this group of young people has answered the call to provide service and assistance in the community and act as role models for the youth in the community.

BOLO CATCHES UP WITH EXPLORERS FROM CALIFORNIA

Explorers from Menlo Park, CA Post 844 are thrilled to be taking part in this year’s conference. Matthew Metteauer (center) enjoys the competition because of “meeting people and seeing the difference in organizational styles of teams from all over the country.” Spen-cer Bruttig’s (left) favorite part about the conference is the chance to “learn from other teams.” Kurt Kaufman (right) is really enjoying the CSU campus, “This is a beautiful campus and so far the food had been great.”

We caught the CBP San Diego Sector Explorers as they were gear-ing up for some exercises on Wednesday morning. Exhausted after a long drive (“We drove for at least 16 hours to get here, but we’re having a good time,” said post member William Estrella, 19), the group was nevertheless excited about competing and representing their post. On the Conference activities, post member Irene Ruiz, 17 said; “I like the experience. You jump right in and get involved and right then and there. There are no second chances.” With those at-titudes and competitive spirit, this squad is sure to impress. THURSDAY MOVIE NIGHT
