Meeting Minutes September 25, 2013 The Classified Staff of Fairmont State University met on September 25, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. in Room 300 of the Engineering Technology Building. PRESENT: Dr. Maria Rose, Tina Malcomb, Holly Fluharty, Becky Miller, Donna Trickett, Dalene Horner, Van Dempsey, Priscilla Steed, Chris Lavorata, Georgeann Cain, Cindy Staley, Julia Ozie, Cindy Curry, Janice Porto, Jessica Spatafore, Tami Winston, NOT PRESENT: Rosetta Kolar, Chair was called out on an emergency. The meeting was called to order by Donna Trickett, Vice-Chair. Agenda for the meeting was distributed (see attached). Dr. Van Dempsey joined the CSC meeting today to give an update on the accreditation visit and Strategic Planning from the Higher Learning Commission preparation for July 2015 (see attached reports). Dr. Dempsey wishes to make sure that leadership groups are aware of the process – goals & strategies and to understand within their units what their different tasks/charges are Chris Lavorata informed the group of her take on the HLC is that they really wish to see Fairmont State succeed and were very complimentary. The HLC wants us to take an analytical look at events across campus to make sure we are using resources effectively. They commended us on this. Holly Fluharty told Dr. Dempsey that the CSC wishes him to come back in the near future to provide more updates before the July 2015 visit. Becky Miller asked Van to come to another meeting after everyone has had a chance to review the documents he brought to see what we as a group can do on the administrative side can do to help. Dr. Rose gave updates on the following:

• Board of Governors had a retreat a few weeks ago. She announced that we are still anticipating a 7.5% budget cut but are waiting on final direction from HEPC.

• We should not expect to receive pay raises until 2018, but that we are a strong institution so we will be ok.

• We have a hard decision facing us as to what programs are most important and which should be reviewed. Dr. Dempsey had to deicide to close the Family and Consumer Science program last year and use the resources for Education.

• Fairmont State will be the sponsor of the 1st Mountain East Conference Soccer Championship in November.

• Lots of upcoming Homecoming events being planned. • Jessica Spatafore is to be congratulated. She hit the ground running and Dr. Rose

would like to thank her for everything she has done.

Construction Updates:

• Wallman Hall – elevator was programmed incorrectly, so this is being fixed. • Turley Center – now has heat • Colebank – has heat • Hardway – still progressing. Windows being delivered soon. Expected

completion should be the end of October, beginning of November. Stephanie Slaubaugh should let those in Hardway know 1-2 days ahead of time when the windows will be installed in their office so they may move for a day or two.

• Feaster Center – bricks have been removed, new AC installed, lighting installed, pool area renovation being worked on.

Cindy Curry shared a draft of the upcoming holiday calendar (attached). She asked everyone to review it as this needs sent to wvOASIS soon for it to be loaded into the system. We are required to have 14 holidays (6 must be observed on the actual day they fall – the rest we may allocate as we wish). If Christmas or New Year’s Day falls on a Tuesday – Friday, we get an extra ½ day. It was asked why we do not get Dec. 22 or 23 off; it is because of academic programs to get grades turned in. December break is now called “Winter Holiday” and Good Friday in April is now called “Spring Holiday” since everyone does not celebrate the same holidays. Cindy also shared the information about the new health care law (attached) – Affordable Care Act a.k.a. Obamacare. As of January 1, 2014 most everyone will be required to have affordable health care. If you have PEIA you need do nothing. You will not be able to switch to a more affordable health plan if your employer offers one. Holly Fluharty provided the following information:

• National Architect Accreditation Master Program – will be the only one in WV if approved. Waiting on the HLC for additional information.

• Holly is really excited about working with Dalene Horner and Becky Miller to do the employee highlights. Would like to interview at least one employee per month and put them on the CSC website. Cindy Curry informed CSC that Ed Bock is working on a report that will give current updates to all classified staff. Cindy will let Ed know who needs access to this report.

Jessica Spatafore has been enthuastically working on several events across campus (see attached). She is trying to get athletes to attend other events to support and grow student sections at all sporting events. She provided a flyer with upcoming events (attached) Sherry Mitchell was not at this meeting today to give ACCE updates. The CSC will meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month in 300 ET (with the next meeting being October 23, 2013).
