LEO Club Leads Annual Toys for Tots Drive Through December 17

The Leo Club is leading the Annu-al Toys for Tots drive through De-cember 17. Cadets are encouraged to bring in a new, unwrapped toy. Cadets that do donate a toy receive a Toys for Tots Challenge coin. Toys for Tots is a pro-gram run by the United States Marine Corps Re-serve which distributes toys to chil-dren whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas.

The program was founded in 1947 and is run through The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. The Foundation raises funds, pur-

chases toys, provides promo-tional and support materials, educates the public, and han-dles day-to-day operations. Presently, the Marine Toys for Tots Program distributes an average of 18 million toys

to 7 million less fortunate children annually.

The Raiders team earned the school’s first state championship by winning the Eastern Shore Championship at Smyrna High School, Dec. 1.

In addition to taking the overall trophy, the nine-member team won First place in Litter Carry, Physical Fitness (PT) Test, and 5K formation run.

The team placed sec-ond in the Vehicle Pull, three seconds behind the winner, and second in the Rope Bridge, sev-en seconds behind the winning team.

“I’m very proud of them,” said Gunnery Sgt. Robert Breneman, USMC, (Ret.). “These nine cadets won the championship but it was the others team mem-bers pushing them all season that helped us get first place today.”

The team also took top honors in the individual PT category, with Cole Pope taking Top Male competitor and Isabella Dunning taking Top Fe-male competitor.

The individual PT event consists of the most push-ups and sit-ups in two minutes plus a mile run.

FSMA’s Raider team includes seniors Alex-ander Hammerstrom and Galvin Rosetti, along with juniors Rob-ert Andrews, Isabella Dunning, and Cole Pope and Isabella Dun-ning.

Sophomores Damian Alexander and Hunter Saunders and freshmen Paige Holowka and Kyndall Wyngaard round out the team.

The championship in-cluded teams from Ap-poquinimink, Mid-dletown, Dover, Sussex Tech, Smyrna, Wood-bridge Mt. Pleasant and Wicomico High Schools.

FSMA Celebrates 243 Marine Corps Birthday First State Military Academy ca-dets, staff and guests celebrate the 243 Marine Corps birthday Nov. 9 at Dover Downs.

The guest of honor was Navy Com-mand Master Chief Chuck Baldwin, USN, (Ret.) co-founder of Delaware Mil-itary Acade-my.

Command Master Chief Baldwin talked about how it has been a pleasure seeing FSMA grow in the past four years.

The ceremony included the tradi-tional cake cutting ceremony and message from the 13th Comman-dant John A. Lejeune.

Attendants of the ball took a mo-ment to recognize the 100 anni-versary of the end of the First World War, which ended at 11 a.m., on the 11 day of the 11

month in 1918.

Additionally, Col. Robert Wallace, USMC (Ret), senior Marine Corps In-structor, took time to recognize the FSMA teachers and staff for their dedication and hard work.

Col. Wallace also asked the senior class to stand and be recognized for their growth of char-acter. The Class of 2019 will be the first class to graduate after completing four years at FSMA.

Cadets enjoyed a meal while listening to the 2018 Com-mandant's message. The night ended with cadets enjoying music, taking pic-tures, socializing, and dancing.

Welcome to the New School Nurse

Notes from the School Nurse ~

When You Don’t Feel Well While we applaud cadet’s desire to come to school, it is very important to prevent the spread of germs.

Stay Home when you are too sick to come to school.

Do NOT come in to be evaluat-ed by the Nurse. This spreads germs in classrooms and on the bus. A parent note of illness is suffi-cient for an excused absence.

A student should stay home if they: Have a fever of 100 degrees or greater. A stu-

dent should remain home for 24 hours after their temperature returns to normal without the use of Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, or combina-tion cold medications, such as Dayquil.

Have vomited. They should remain home for 24 hours after vomiting stops.

Have diarrhea. They should remain home for 24 hours after diarrhea stops.
