C2. Summary of expertise and activities

I have been involved in photovoltaic (PV) system applications research and development since 1995. My PhD thesis was entitled ‘Photovoltaics in the built environment: An application for Malaysia’. It involved a field experience work at a remote 7.2 kWp PV hybrid system for a microwave repeater station at Lenggong, Perak. This was followed by monitoring work using a stand-alone automated system to enable techno-economic performance analysis work done on a 2.6 kWp grid-connected PV system at the Beacon Energy Pvt Ltd, Whittle Hill Farm office, England. Finally, a simulative Building integrated Photovoltaic (BiPV) system for Malaysian applications in school buildings using PVSYST© and SUNREL© had been performed to explore its techno-economic performances.

At the international level, I have been appointed as a Technical Committee Member of APEC’s Stand-alone Power Systems Committee by the Institute of Sustainable Power, USA (2006). I am also registered at the APN External Review System for ARCP global change research proposals, Japan since 2007. I have also been selected and sent by the Government of Malaysia (GoM) to represent the country on PV systems at several international meetings such as: Expert Representative of Malaysia at the International Energy Agency Photovoltaic Power Systems (IEA PVPS) for Tasks 11 and 13; Expert Representative of Malaysia at the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) in USA (2008); and Expert Representative of Malaysia at the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) in France (2009).

At the national level, I have been engaged in the various Malaysian government, semi-government and government-linked companies and agencies since the early 1990’s. These included providing expert advice, technical service and evaluation on PV systems design, training, evaluation, assessment, preparing tender documents, research proposals and post-project evaluations for on-grid and off-grid connected PV systems. The agencies include: the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s IRPA, TECHNOFUND and IGS on the energy sector, the Ministry of Rural Development’s rural electrification programme, Pusat Tenaga Malaysia’s (PTM) grid-connected BiPV projects, the Public Works Department’s seminar and short course on PV systems, Perbadanan Taman Negara Johor’s Endau-Rompin PV hybrid system, MESITA’s PV evaluation and post-project visits, CETREE, USM’s workshops and PV-related activities and publications, MBiPV-GEF workshops, PTM’s Solar Roadmap workshops, SIRIM’s Special Working group on PV standards, and referee for several national journals and international seminars (SIRIM, USM, UPM, IEEE-Malaysia Chapter). In addition, I have been appointed as Chief Evaluator of PV Systems in Malaysia by the Malaysian Photovoltaic Industry Association.

At the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), currently I hold the post of Associate Professor and is now Director of the Photvoltaic Monitoring Centre (PVMC) which monitors all Grid-Connected PV systems (GC-PV) in Malaysia. In addition, I am also heading a ‘Solar Energy Applications Research Laboratory’ at the Faculty of Applied Sciences at UiTM. which I have set up. Past and present work in PV includes: the design, installation, commissioning and evaluation of stand-alone PV systems and a 1 kWp PV hybrid system in UiTM. In addition, I have been regularly engaged as evaluator and referee for UiTM’s energy and PV related projects, proposals and journals for UiTM funding prior to submission to the Malaysian Government funding bodies. Besides that, I have also been involved in various energy and energy-efficiency related activities at UiTM, such as energy auditing, organising national and international seminars/workshops, judging of competitions and reviewing technical journal papers.

In addition, I have won awards for PV and related products in national and international exhibitions. Details of the preceding items are listed in the respective sections as follows.
