EXPLANATORY NOTES
The Major Fruit Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides statistical updates on production, area and bearing trees statistics of four (4) major fruits, namely, banana, mango, pineapple and calamansi. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture which is released quarterly by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS). This 2nd quarter 2012 issue of the Bulletin provides final estimates of production in January‐March 2012, preliminary estimates of production in April‐June 2012, preliminary estimates of production, area planted and number of bearing trees in January‐ June 2012. The data on area and bearing trees are reported on a semi‐annual basis. The source of data is the quarterly Crops Production Survey (CrPS) of the BAS.

Banana
April‐June 2012
o Banana production in April‐June 2012 was estimated at 2,547.94 thousand mt. This was 1.32 percent higher than the 2,514,729 mt of output in 2011.
o The production increment was due to several factors such as:
There were additional bearing hills in Northern Mindanao, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and ARMM.
Bigger fruits were harvested in SOCCSKSARGEN, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula and other areas in Central Visayas and ARMM.
The plants recovered from the previous typhoons that visited Cagayan Valley.
o Banana production this quarter was 28 percent of the annual production. This was the largest share in the 5‐year annual average production.
o Davao Region recorded the highest production at 1,180.53 thousand mt or 46.33 percent of the total banana output in the country. This was followed by Northern Mindanao with 385.23 thousand mt or 15.12 percent share and SOCCSKSARGEN with 283.66 thousand mt or 11.13 percent share (Figure 1).
o The increase in production was contributed by the gains in output of lacatan banana, 6.74 percent; latundan banana, 5.52 percent and saba banana, 2.03 percent.
o Lacatan, latundan and saba varieties posted positive growths this quarter with a combined share of 48 percent in this quarter’s banana production.
o Cavendish banana registered a reduction of production due to contraction in area harvested in Northern Mindanao. This variety comprised 52 percent, the bulk of the banana production this quarter (Figure 2).

Calamansi
April‐June 2012
o In the second quarter of 2012, calamansi production at 22.91 thousand mt dropped by 2.59 percent from its level of 23.52 thousand mt in 2011.
o The decline in production was attributed to the following:
Yields in MIMAROPA and Cagayan Valley dropped due to the rains that occurred during the flowering and fruiting stages.
Smaller fruits and less harvesting in Davao Region because some farmers engaged in mining activities.
The number of bearing trees in Bicol Region and Western Visayas decreased as a result of cutting of old trees.
Old trees in Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon bore small fruits.
o Calamansi production this quarter accounted for 13 percent in the 5‐year annual average production. The bulk of production is usually in the 3rd quarter at 52 percent share.
o The top calamansi producers were MIMAROPA, Zamboanga Peninsula and Central Luzon (Figure 3).

Mango
April‐June 2012
o Mango production this April‐June 2012 was 520.21 thousand mt. It was down by 1.86 percent from the 2011 output of 530.06 thousand mt.
o The decrease in production can be attributed to the following:
Mango trees in Ilocos Region, the top mango producing region, were affected
by cecid flies and capsid bugs. This was on top of less chemical spraying and
less voluntary flowering of mango trees across the regions.
Drop in production in Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon was traced to the continuous rains in the area.
In CALABARZON and Caraga regions, less bearing trees bore fruits.
o Production this quarter accounted for 67 percent of the annual production in the
5‐year annual average.
o Ilocos Region shared 32 percent of the total mango production this quarter. It
represented 34 percent of the carabao mango production in the country (Figure
4).
o The other top producers during the period were CALABARZON and Zamboanga
Peninsula (Figure 4).
o Carabao mango production contributed 82 percent to the country’s mango
production this quarter (Figure 5).

Pineapple
April‐June 2012
o The country produced 634.05 thousand mt of pineapples this quarter. This was 3.24 percent higher than the output of 614.15 thousand mt in 2011.
o Several factors contributed to the increment in production.
Increased area harvested in Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Ilocos Region and Central
Luzon.
Bigger fruits were harvested in CALABARZON, Eastern Visayas, Cagayan Valley, Davao
Region and Ilocos Region.
Favorable weather in Bicol Region.
o The top producers, namely, Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, CALABARZON and Bicol Region contributed 94.69 percent to the national pineapple production (Figure 6).
o This quarter’s production represented 26 percent of the 5‐year annual average production.
8
Banana
January‐June 2012
o In the first six (6) months of 2012, banana production was 4,697.3 thousand mt or 1.63 percent above the 2011 production output of 4,622.0 thousand mt.
o Despite the 0.30 percent drop in the second quarter due to less export demand, cavendish banana production in January‐June 2012 was 2,434.5 thousand mt or 0.74 percent higher than last year’s level of 2,416.5 thousand mt.
o During the first half of 2012, area planted at 448,163 hectares expanded by 0.47 percent from the 446,064 hectares in 2011.
o The number of bearing hills in the first half of 2012 increased by 0.74 percent to 276,124,285 hills from 274,088,962 hills in 2011.
Calamansi
January‐June 2012
o Calamansi production in January‐June 2012 was recorded at 42.5 thousand mt, 4.03 percent lower than the 2011 production of 44.2 thousand mt.
o The reduction in calamansi production was attributed to the following:
Shifting to durian, saba and lanzones in MIMAROPA and to cacao in Davao
Region.
Cutting of old unproductive trees in Western Visayas.
Drop in yield due to excessive rains in MIMAROPA.
Less harvest and smaller fruits harvested in Davao Region.
o During the reference period, area planted to calamansi contracted by 0.18
percent to 20,953 hectares from last year’s 20,991 hectares.
o The number of bearing trees dropped by 0.42 percent to 9,200,941 trees from
9,240,012 trees in 2011.
9
Mango
January‐June 2012
o Mango production was 674.5 thousand mt in January‐June 2012. This was 2.85 percent below the 694.3 thousand mt of output in 2011.
o The reduction was due to the following:
Infestation of fruit flies, mango hoppers, cecid flies and capsid bugs in Ilocos Region.
Less flower induction in some areas in Ilocos Region, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and SOCCSKSARGEN.
The effects of rains and winds during the flowering stage in Central Luzon and Zamboanga Peninsula.
o During the reference period, 186,352 hectares were planted to mango of all varieties. This was 0.09 percent above the 186,197 hectares in 2011.
o The number of bearing trees in the first six (6) months of 2012 reached 8,526,959 trees which represented a 0.50 percent reduction from the 8,570,177 trees in 2011.
Pineapple
January‐June 2012
o In the first six (6) months of 2012, pineapple production was 1,146.1 thousand mt. This was 4.43 percent higher than the 1,097.4 thousand mt in 2011.
o The production increment was traced to the following:
Increase in area harvested due to expansion of commercial farms in Northern Mindanao.
Bigger fruits were harvested in Eastern Visayas and Davao Region.
o Area planted to pineapple in 2012 expanded by 0.16 percent to 57,467 hectares from 57,375 hectares in 2011.
