What is FRP ?
Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composite
• Fiber
• Resin
6
+
Fibers
• Carbon
• Glass
• Aramid (Kevlar)
• Basalt
7
Resin
• Thermoplastic, becomes pliable or moldable above a specific temperature and solidifies upon cooling
• Thermoset, soft solid or viscous liquid state that changes irreversibly into an infusible, insoluble polymer network by curing
8
Main FRP Resin Systems
• Polyester
• Polyurethane
9
Fillers and Additives to Resins
Fillers and Additives to Improve FRP Properties:
• UV inhibitors (UV protection)
• Fire inhibitors (Fire resistance)
• Flow improvement
• Abrasion resistance
• Weight improvement (fillers)

17
Advantages of FRP
18
High dielectric strength
Enhances lineman and ground hand safety during live
line pole replacement sets. Mitigate safety concerns
using FRP poles and Cross Arms.
Advantages of FRP
19
Environmentally inert
• No Chemicals leaching to the environment (Fish habitat areas,
drinking water supply areas etc.)
• Simple disposal if needed
Advantages of FRP
20
Composite utility poles are manufactured with fire retardant
additives for optimal performance in the event of a brush or
pole top fire
Fire resistant
Advantages of FRP
21
• Composite materials are an engineered product.
• The engineered pole is manufactured in a production plant and exhibits a
coefficient of variation of less than 5%.
• You get a stronger structure that will maintain its design strength over an
extended period of time.
• Why should you care? In 20, 30, 40 plus years the composite utility pole will
maintain 80% of its original strength. Therefore, grid reliability is highly
increased.
FRP Advantages
22
Unaffected by Termites, Woodpeckers and Vermin
FRP Advantages
23
Composite utility structures will not rot, spall or corrode
due to the environment.
FRP Advantages
24
Light Weight
• 12 m long wood pole is
about 725 kg (1600 lbs)
• 12 m long 305 mm (12”) dia
FRP pole is 295 kg (650 lbs)
FRP AdvantagesCost effective
25
FRP Advantages
• Electrically Insulating
26
Installation Methods
• Same as with Wood, Steel or Concrete Structures
• Except lighter equipment could be used
• No conductive or inductive issues for live line work
