SHEDDING LIGHT on the use of GENOMIC TESTING- Mirtelize Kreuiter

Genomic testing makes it possible to reliably predict genetic merit, confidently select for a more valuable herd and to make sound breeding decisions based on scientific data for core traits.

These benefits are available to commercial dairy farmers using this tool, according to Zoetis USA, which is the laboratory that analyses SA Holsteins genomic samples.

However, commercial dairy farmers in South Africa are still wary of this new technology, despite the fact that it is the latest “buzzword” in agricultural magazines, Farmers’ days, blogs and social media pages.

This may be because the “big genomic fuss” tends to be theoretical rather than practical. If their resistance is to be overcome, commercial dairy farmers need to be convinced that this tool will make a difference to herd health and profitability.

I have interviewed several SA Holstein members who have regularly used genomic samples to look for patterns and recurring themes among their experiences. The following trends emerged:

GENOMIC TESTING CAN IMPROVE YOUR BREEDING GOALS:

“We can now collect accurate information for over 30 production, health and type traits. With this data we

can identify the top 70% of heifers for insemination, with the best possible selection of bulls to improve the next generation,” say the management of Droevlei Farm in the Western Cape.

Management of De Grendel farm in the Western Cape agree: “Our goal is to breed profitable, healthy and long-lasting cows (and one or two for the show ring)!

Genomics helps me identify which cows have the best genetic potential to fulfill these goals.”

Another Holstein member emphasized that breeding goals had shifted to milk production, fertility and health during the past ten years. “Dairies have decreased in number and increased in size, and genomic testing has helped us predict the traits which are vital to help us reach our goals.

“This makes it possible to establish whether our herds are actually improving.”

CHALLENGES REGARDING THE USE OF GENOMIC RESULTS:

One respondent stressed the importance of collecting sufficient data to incorporate into breeding programmes, thereby making it possible to formulate breeding goals.

He stated that the biggest challenge was to work out averages for tested daughters, as tests on individual

Page 20: From the/Van die President 4 - SA Holstein · Email: mario.marais@afgri.co.za Cell: 082 854 5110 NATAL HOLSTEIN KLUB/NATAL HOLSTEIN CLUB Craig Rees PO Box 89, Blackheath, Cape Town,

20

calves were impractical, and could not be used for breeding purposes. Data provided by averages would make it possible to select the bull most likely to improve the herd potential.

Another respondent said that ease of access to results was another challenge, especially for TPI results. LPI results were more readily available, he said.

Time was another factor, he said. “You need time to sit and dig through all the paperwork and sire options.

High costs were another factor to consider, according to a respondent from De Grendel farm. “Once you have identified brood dams, you need to do something with them, and flushing costs are high,” he said.

ADVANTAGES OF GENOMIC TESTING FOR YOUR DAIRY:

According to Zoetis USA, long-term advantages of genomic testing include correctly addressing inbreeding, prediction of future profitability, and the ability to choose replacement animals with the potential to enhance the herd’s genetic or breeding plans.

“Genetic improvement is the first thought that comes to mind when we think about long term advantages. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and breeders or commercial farmers can’t expect to make immediate genetic improvements. Genetic and herd improvement take a long time. With that said, deterioration can happen faster than improvements. Genomic results highlight positive traits, as well as what to look out for in a bull to correct any shortcomings.

According to De Grendel management, short term advantages include sorting the herd into high index and show type, and thereafter ranking the rest from good to not so good. Long term advantage will be to increase the average index of the herd by disposing of the “tail” and therefore increasing profitability and longevity.

Droevlei management believe that genomics can accurately predict the quality of heifers entering the milking parlor the following year.

GENOMICS AS A MANAGEMENT TOOL IN DAIRIES:

Genomics is a tool to identify the cows with the best genetic potential. This empowers the farmer to multiply those lines and thereby achieve his breeding goals. It is also the means to measure a farm’s best genetics (and ultimately the herds’ genetics), against others world wide, say De Grendel management.

Farmers should realize that patience is the key when trying to solve breeding programs. Using genomics to improve the herd is a process, and not a quick fix. Some farmers become discouraged when they

have used the best genetic material for artificial insemination (AI) and the results are disappointing.

It is impossible to measure herd improvements simply by observing cows in the herd and selecting good bulls. This is where genomics is a helpful tool, because it reveals the cow’s hidden genetic potential. The genes of a good bull and a good cow don’t necessarily produce a good calf, because of recessive and dominant genes. Genes can also skip generations, and some traits are negatively correlated to others. The more traits one selects to work on simultaneously, the longer it will take to effect herd improvement.

Genomics is a management tool which enables dairy farmers to get a scientific prediction of what the calves will look like when they start milking. This will empower them to select bulls which will improve the specific traits required, whether milk production or fertility.

GENOMIC RESULTS USED IN MATING PROGRAMS:

According to Zoetis USA, genomics addresses fertility haplotypes and genetic conditions that can be better managed in mating programs. Genomics does this by providing electronic reports which can be integrated into mating programs.

Genomic testing has broadened Farmers’ bull selection choices, since most bulls are genetically tested on a Total Performance Index (TPI). Farmers can therefore use any breeding program they prefer to predict the quality of the calves from genomic tested cows if specific bulls are used.

It can therefore be seen that Genomics takes a lot of the guess-work out of breeding programs aimed at improving herd genetics. It therefore has the potential to save farmers time and money in their quest to improve their herds and improve profitability.

KAASFEES2018SA

Ons stalletjie was definitief ‘n sukses!

Agri-Expo Livestock huisves 20ste SA Holstein Nasionale Kampioenskappe

Agri-Expo Livestock hosts 20th SA Holstein National Championships

The National Championships of the SA Holstein Breeders’ Society will take place from Thursday 11 until Saturday 13 October at Agri-Expo Livestock at Sandringham outside Stellenbosch. It is the 20th time that the championships are presented, but only for the third time in the Western Cape, in the 106 years of the society’s existence. The first championships were held at the Rand Show in Johannesburg in 1949.

According to Johan Ehlers, Chief Executive Officer of Agri-Expo, the fifth and seventh championships were held in 1970 and 1981 at the Cape Show in Goodwood, also by Agri-Expo. “It is therefore highly appropriate that Agri-Expo Livestock as the biggest dairy show in South Africa, which is being presented for the fifth time this year, hosts the championships,” says Ehlers. “Honour will be bestowed upon Holstein role-players who made their mark in the industry during a special Night of the Legends.”

According to Herman Duvenage, Breed Director of SA Holstein, visitors will see animals of excellent quality from all over South Africa in the ring. “Livestock is considered an excellent platform for breeders to showcase their best animals to both the public and prospective buyers,” says Duvenage. “Our national show is always a highlight for anyone who has the interests of this breed at heart.”

SA Holstein’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 10 October, followed by the National Championships from Thursday 11 until Saturday 13 October.

Livestock is especially sought after for its dairy interbreed show, supported by the three largest dairy breeds, the Holstein, Ayrshire and Jersey breeders’ societies. The crowning of the FNB Dairy Queen on Saturday 13 October is the highest honour awarded to a dairy breeder. A Holstein cow, Milagro Sexie

Internasionale Holstein-beoordelaar

Interessante feite:

13140 from Andrew Masterson, well-known breeder of the Eastern Cape, carried this crown last year.

International Holstein judge

A highlight at this year’s dairy show is the participation of the international Holstein judge, Brian Carscadden of Canada. Carscadden has already judged in more than 28 countries, including at national shows in 18 countries. Carscadden’s participation is made possible by Semex South Africa and the Holstein Breeder Society of Canada.

Agri-Expo Livestock is open to the public daily from 08:00 to 18:00 from Thursday 11 until Saturday 13 October. The programme includes beef cattle interbreed championships, a regional youth show, sheepdog and horse auctions, a free schools’ programme, beef cattle and dairy goat information days and the Groot Plaasproe food stalls.

Visit www.livestock.org.za for the full Livestock program. Tickets are available at Computicket and the gate at R100 for adults and R30 for scholars (free on Thursday and Friday). Access for children under six years is free. Pensioners pay only R50 on Thursday and Friday. For more information, contact Agri-Expo at 021-975 4440 or [email protected].

Interesting facts:

• The SA Holstein cattle breeders association is the largest dairy breed association in South Africa. Holsteins produces most of the milk consumed by the public and is also the breed that creates the most work.

• The Holstein race is the world’s largest dairy cow breed with nearly 30 million cows recorded in thirty countries. The advantage for the South African dairy manufacturer is that the very best animals from a very large population can be selected with major improvements in genetics over fairly short periods of time.

• The average Holstein cow has an increased milk production of more than 12 000 kg compared with 50 years ago.

• According to SA Holstein, they are the only organisation officially recognised by the World Holstein Friesian Federation (WHFF) and the Animal Improvement Act for the issue of pedigrees of registered Holstein in South Africa. SA Holstein is also the only breeders’ association that owns copyright on their pedigrees (since 1946).
