From The Studio FloorShowcasing the collective artwork of Suffolk, London and international-based artists, ‘From the Studio Floor’ is the second in a series of national exhibitions dedicated to bringing the new unseen works of artists fresh from their ‘studio floors’ to our doors.

The artist’s will be tantalising us with some of their recently completed works as well as giving us a taste of what they will be working on next. Each artist will be offering only one piece of artwork, either from a series or commissioned especially for the show, and is a wonderful opportunity to connect and engage with a variety of talented and unique individuals in the Suffolk area.

Currently my practice is focused on the uncanny. This feeling of the uncanny is something I have tried to capture in my work. I have been creating a series of psychologically charged portraits from female criminal mug-shots. Each portrait contains insects or flowers which allude to the crime these women have committed. I have been trying to make the viewer uncomfortable with a deeper, more disturbing reveal of the women’s personalities I am depicting.

These women have been labelled as criminals. They could be innately evil or victims of unfortunate circumstances, but at some point there will have been a change in their personalities, making them transform from the people they once were into rejected members of society. I create portraits that are an intense intimate exposure of hidden emotions.

Mark Batty Mark Batty currently lives and works in London, UK, after recently graduating from a BA (Hons) degree in illustration at Southampton Solent. He has since changed his artistic focus to oil painting and follows in the vein of explorers and the artists that accompanied them and documented their expeditions.

Mark’s work is driven by wanderlust and an awe of nature and the sublime, tackling various subject matter all falling under the same umbrella; including the cosmos and British wildlife. Maintaining an intense level of curiosity for the natural world, Mark works to “reawaken and engage the viewer’s, often unaffected or dormant, sense of wonder and connection to nature” through his art and direct focus to global issues surrounding “conservation efforts and our vulnerable natural environment.”

In my practice I create both paintings and installations. I use these mediums as a means to an end to explore my ideas. My work is specifically concerned with how role-play and artifice reveal essential truths about not only the construction of identity but also the construction of reality. I am interested in linking and creating time-slips between different eras and countries. C.A. Moberley and Elinor F. Jourdain’s text based on their claim to have experienced a time slip at Versailles from 1901 to the summer of the French Revolution has been the starting point for my latest work.

I focus in particular on the ‘rural’ in my work. I have travelled on artist residencies to paint and teach in rural communities in both Spain and France. I am painting a work specifically for this show inspired by the Suffolk Hadleigh Show I attended with fellow artist Jessica Oliver in 2014.

Stuart Coy

Stuart Coy has lived and worked in Suffolk all his life. After studying graphic arts at college he now is working as a Quantity Surveyor, but maintains his interest in art- painting and drawing particularly. “A couple of years ago I read an article about Sudbourne Park Printmakers, near Orford, where they run printmaking workshops. I have attended their workshops on several occasions and this picture was produced there under the guidance of local artist, and printmaker, Peter Polaine.” The head was originally a pencil drawing, one of a series, which was adapted into a woodcut print using a woodcut block to create the image and printed twice to create the two colours. “The pleasure of woodcut printing, and printmaking generally, is seeing the result when you peel back the paper- not just the image but the subtlety of the texture and depth of colour. I was pleasantly surprised with how varying the pressure revealed the wood grain and I selected this print because of the contrast between the thick bold lines of the head against the delicate wood grain of the background.”

My inspiration comes from the area in which I live. My latest work is created very organically and drawn whilst out walking in a small sketchbook -which is then explored and represented in different ways in my studio at home. Sometimes my work is painted or created with a mixed media feel, other times textiles, sewing and layering occurs within my work. I am interested in capturing the whole landscape or at times snippets and sections. Colour and mark making in slightly abstracted forms are often strong characteristics of my work. I am currently working and completing a series of similar works as that attached, all inspired mainly from Nacton, Playford, Rushmere, Wherstead, Cockfield, Mistley, and Flatford where I walk my energetic Dalmation.

I love that I have this passion, the need to create and capture what surrounds me, and share that excitement with young people in my job as a teacher and current Head of Creative Art Faculty in a high school. As an Artist I am about colour and mark making – capturing the beauty from the landscape. At times the whole landscape, other times close ups and fragments- organically sketched shapes and forms expressively explored once I am back in my studio.

John Dawkins

John Dawkins trained as a graphic designer, and worked for many years in London design and advertising companies. He started painting 20 years ago, and has exhibited on the south coast, his previous hometown of Southend-on-Sea, and at The Mall Galleries, in London, with The Royal Society of Marine Artists. Since moving to Suffolk, he has continued to exhibit and sell work.

His subject matter was originally of a marine/coastal nature, but he has since diversified into landscape and townscape. He works mainly in acrylics, but also produces finished pencil drawings as well as using this medium for preliminary sketches. His work has become more impressionistic, to some observers dreamlike. He draws his compositions from scratch, taking great care with the balance of tonal values, positioning of ‘centre of interest’ and ‘lead ins’ or pathways for the eye to follow. He produces several thumbnails to explore all the possibilities before embarking on the finished work.

‘Living in Suffolk has been a big inspiration to me, especially seeing the beautiful countryside everyday, my previous life always being centred in town and city’.The painting ‘PS Waverley at Southwold Pier’ evokes a nostalgic air, present in many of his paintings. Recapturing the now largely vanished world of the daytripper steamers, of which there were many, plying their trade round the British coast.

The Pool Paintings 2015Whilst working on a swimming pool commission in 2014 in Houston Texas I began to get glimpses in the pool of light and “other worldliness” which I had been searching for in my paintings. The pool was behaving like a lens or camera obscura, transmitting ephemeral images of the environment, the world, the atmosphere and space which could be captured on the iPhone. This effect was happening as a result of changing the pool colour from blue to a nearly black. This became my muse, (along with another collector’s pool in Scottsdale, Arizona, which I “tuned up” with a blue that resonates with the desert sky),inspiring a new direction in my work.

In these recent paintings I am getting closer to expressing the life free of the body, informed by my experiences, through serious illness, of insights, visions and glimpses of where I come from and where I’m going- ‘Out of this World’

Design and fabrication of swimming pools is using iPhone 4s, iCloud, iPhone 5s. Then a combination of hand painting on canvas, digital printing, hand painting with oil paint, gold leaf and mixed media on stretched canvas or solid wood as stated. All works are unique, signed on front and signed and dated on the reverse. A certificate of authenticity and process is also provided with purchase.

Jonathan Kennedy

Jonathan Kennedy derives from a commercial design background with a history in Art and Design. He grew up in Hampstead, London and went to school in Suffolk, now spending more time on own Fine Art, including Sculpture, he is greatly “inspired by the big skies and open vistas of the East Anglian countryside” and looks within his own work to represent a sense of the precipice of light and space that Suffolk exudes. With this painting, he aims to capture the sense of expanse and moving light across the countryside during harvest- and represent in this typically Suffolk flatness of skyline, a feeling of openness and subtle beauty of the horizon.

Lloyd Evans & Mark Aaron

Recent works including those in this exhibition have been produced in collaboration with fellow artist Mark Aaron, in an open exchange one creates work to which the other responds, either with visuals or sound. In this way the conversation continues and the work constantly evolves. We have also begun exploring how the works are altered by context, digitally projecting pieces in different locations and exploring ways to disrupt and fragment the picture plain. This has led to a series of guerrilla projections throughout the region.

Working primarily as a painter I rely on gesture and mark making to create large-scale abstract images. These mix both traditional and contemporary image-making techniques and processes, opening a dialogue between painting, digital image generation, projection, and animation. I believe that in the same way a vibrant colour dulls the longer we look at it, prolonged or repeated viewing can diminish the emotional response to an image. In my current practice I explore methods of altering or reinventing the picture plain to sustain the viewer’s engagement. This has led me to experimenting with time-based processes, combining sound and visuals in large scale animated works which are designed to immerse the viewer.

Emily Godden

The digital drawing The Pitminster Boy, c.1756 (Right Hand) comes from the project Handle with care, which uses the collection at Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury as source data to be processed and re contextualised to be listened to through sound prints. These sound prints document elements of deterioration to selected elements in selected paintings within the collection and were recorded in the gallery space. You can listen to the sound prints online: http://bit.ly/1JQi7Ab

Emily Godden’s practice is currently focused around printmaking stretched into its broadest sense of existence to explore, document and translate both physically and naturally occurring traces through the medium of print. In recent work she has used sound as a mechanism to transmit data and communicate traces to exploit the essence of print in a post-digital landscape.

Living in Ipswich Emily Godden is currently studying BA (Hons) Fine Art at UCS and has exhibited work at Tate Britain, Firstsite, The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and was recently shortlisted for the Batsford Prize for Fine Art.

Leigh Hammett

Leigh Hammett is a self-trained artist. He lives, works and draws inspiration from Suffolk, he currently resides in the area known as Constable Country but the vivid imagery and colours used in his works can be far removed from Constable’s gentle, restrained landscapes.

As a painter of bespoke portraits, usually of his own design, he has a clear and uncomplicated vision of his subjects, using fresh and vibrant colours and often giving a meaningful twist to well-known images. His styles include themed; formal; informal; highly rendered; or loose oil sketches.

His use of media and materials includes charcoal; pencil; ink; and gold leaf; but his first love is oil paint, his precise knowledge and recreation of the past masters is displayed in works such as “The Virgin in prayer” study, in which he has stayed true to the original 17th century piece bar the edition of the gold leaf halo.

Ania Hobson

Ania paints and lives in Suffolk, and was brought up on a small holding where animals were her first subject, since then figurative painting and portraiture soon became her main passions, and she began to exhibit in joint and solo shows, and enter competitions. Ania likes to challenge herself by painting interesting perspectives and different moods of her subjects. She has developed a loose and unhurried style that suits informal settings and her modern sitters.

Earlier this year Ania exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London with The Society of Women Artists , having previously been pre-selected for the Threadneedle Prize, Royal Society of Wildlife Artists , and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

Last year, to broaden her horizons, she created a successful kick-starter project to help raise funds to study at the Florence Academy of Art to heighten her skills in portrait painting. Ania’s latest kick-starter project was also recently fully funded to help her exhibit 8 life size portraits in London next year- of which ‘Thom’ is the first painting in the series of eight.

The artist is a qualified engineer. This conceptual sculpture is made of found mechanical components from a Suffolk workshop -Machin has been purposely made from many perfectly serviceable, valuable and high specification components. They are brought together as a seemingly impressive mechanical device, mounted on bearings that allow it to be turned, further reinforcing the impression of complexity and effectiveness.

Despite the attractive and uniform finish of the components, and impressive form coupled with an initial impression of functionality, the machine is flawed; hence the title. The gears do not mesh. The chain does not engage. The initial perception melts away when the sculpture is closely examined revealing a telling juxtaposition that the machine is merely an assembly of quality components that would all serve their individual purpose perfectly well if placed properly or in an alternative environment.

Grace Kebby

This portrait is of my father Mark and belongs to a series of portraits, which I developed during my final year of university. I wanted to capture tranquillity, stillness and force the importance of slowing down and pausing to create an image of complete calm. It was key that the subject was isolated, hidden and protected from the audiences gaze.

I used medium format as this enabled me to create time when photographing my friends and family. Many filters and gels were used in the production of capturing this portrait. I prefer to capture all elements in camera as opposed to any heavy post-production editing.

Since graduating from Kingston University, where I studied Fine Art Photography, I have returned to Suffolk where I was born and bred. I am currently working on a collection of small scale, intimate hand tined portraits.

Laura Leahy

Laura Leahy is a visual artist whose practice is mainly project based; each project begins by using an object to trigger social and artistic exchanges. In her latest project, An Account of Apples, Leahy used apples as the trigger to explore Suffolk’s contemporary rural landscape.

Using apples led to walking through an orchard in Aspall, inspiring reflections on rural Suffolk. These explorations involved the de-familiarization of what is seen to challenge our habits of perception. For example, in Almost Blossom, Leahy contemplates what it is to be visually overexposed, relating that to stepping from shadows into bright sunlight. Here the beautiful Suffolk landscape is overexposed, putting one visually into that moment when one is between not seeing and seeing.

Fabiana Di Mascio

Having always had an interest in art, it wasn’t until about 5 years ago that I actually decided to pay that interest more attention. I have lived in Ipswich all of my life, so exploring art opportunities locally was on obvious starting point. I got involved in a major community arts project (The never ending mural) which not only gave me the assurance that art was a direction I wanted to follow, but also the confidence to move my work out into the world. Since then, that is steadily what I have been doing. Exhibiting my work locally in Ipswich and further afield in Beccles, Felixstowe and the Royal academy in London. I aim to continue these journeys as I progress.

This piece is the first completed piece in a series of oil self-portraits the artist is currently working on, the use of direct gaze to the viewer and bold brush mark captures the personality of the artist while provoking a sense of quiet focus. Maria, now based in Cambridge as she has attained her Ph.D. in Mathematics, has had no formal artistic training – however, this piece is the beginning of a new series of oil portraits for her- intent on exploring her love of figurative portraiture and developing her own character of painting style- subtle and compelling to the viewer, inviting them to explore the emotion and mood within the painting.

Susie Mendlesson

Susie Mendelsson is an artist who is fascinated by the human figure. Originally a painter, since 2010 she has been making models of the human figure from paper, wood, wire and recycled materials. When Susie moved to Woodbridge five years ago she discovered that she is a relative rarity in Suffolk since she doesn’t use the beautiful local landscape as her inspiration but instead investigates the inner landscapes and untold stories which live within us all. At first sight these inner lives can appear ugly or even violent, but Susie tries to find the beauty in these expressions of basic humanity.

To have and to hold explores the fine line between a familiar, loving, reassuring hug and the kind of smothering, restrictive embrace which is all about ownership.

Jason Nunn

Jason Nunn is a portrait artist based in Ipswich, Suffolk, and is also a classically trained pianist. Music plays an integral role when creating his body of work. Having graduated last year with a BA in Fine Art at University Campus Suffolk, he is exhibiting regularly in his home county of Suffolk and also in London. Since graduating Jason was one of eighteen graduates to have work shown at Mall Galleries in London, part of the FBA Futures 2015. “Pianist Ludovico Einaudi has been a big influence in my life for the last few years and still is; I find his music very calming, therapeutic and sets a tone. Whilst painting I listen to his music and get lost by the sounds, those sounds become ambient. All the marks I make through paint are a document of my emotions. Painting Einaudi was a completely different painting experience, playing his music in the background and painting the man himself his presence becomes very dominant.”

My principal concerns are an engagement with the concept of light and space- in creating oil paintings that representa sense of movement and energy within wild nature. Considering moments of ‘atmospheric phenomena’ within imagination when working from landscape and focusing on how atmosphere acts as a catalyst for the viewer to re-engage with nature in a visceral way.

The aim is to evoke the sense of standing on the precipice of open vista. Engineered by a seemingly endless expanse of ocean, wind, light and colour defined by fluid paint marks and a concentration on the horizon, the viewer should be called to wade into the paint. This body of work is inspired by research trips along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Coast and Scotland’s Northern Highlands where the temperamental and changing light of seasons, weather, rich folklore and vibrant skies encouraged a playful exploration of paint and surface - while keeping the feel of movement within the lochs, mountains, seas and skies fresh and tangible.

Jessica recently won the Mall Galleries FBA Futures ‘One to Watch 2015’ Prize and has working with Marble sculpture in Carrara, Italy as part of her new body of work- she is also curating the From the Studio Floor Exhibitions around the UK.

George Sarson

George is a landscape artist from Suffolk who enjoys painting on a large scale with a carefully chosen colour palette that sits softly on the canvas. His inspiration of this painting came initially from Old Hunstanton in Norfolk. He describes the initial moment when he was walking along the beach and estuaries of a small hamlet called Holme.

“The descriptive but lack of clouds loomed over the horizon, the sand was pearly white and the water weaving perfectly from the sea. I felt instantly I needed to capture this cold almost tropical morning on canvas and rectify the wispy clouds which were burning away in the sun. When painting I feel the need to add my own touch and imagination whether it comes in colour, distortion or exaggeration. I included bold ‘contour’ lines across this painting not only to draw the eye but also to describe the true landscape. I have also included dabs of orange which become apparent in person but are hard to see in the pictures, this burst of colour in such a tranquil scene I feel completes the painting and describes the heart of the painting and the emotion behind the making of it.”

My purpose in art is to use traditional tools and methods to produce beautiful objects that are historically informed, crafted to a high degree of quality, and made to last.

My John Segesta inspired Boudica- created especially for this Suffolk Exhibition -is a simultaneously a heroic and tragic figure that resonates from ancient British history into the present, and is the picture of feminine power. The last Iceni Queen from what is today East Anglia, she commanded and led the armies of her tribe and its allies in open revolt against Roman colonial tyranny.

A native of New England, Ben trained in the art, architectural and sculptural traditions of Britain and Europe while a student at the City & Guilds of London Art School. His current practice employs drawing, modelling and photographic collage to produce designs that are realised in sculpture, with stone as his primary medium.

Joey and Edna is a piece from a collection of paintings that is on-going called ‘Pets and Their People’ which explores the emotional interaction of people that share their lives with pets. Joey and Edna hopefully evokes how old age can be a lonely place for most people with just memories to call on every day and how important to Edna the company of Joey is and vice versa.

I was born in Manchester but have lived in Suffolk for over thirty years. I have always enjoyed painting people, animals and botanics. I like to explore all medias but pencil and charcoal are my favourite.

I am inspired by the environment and what Henri Bresson referred to as the ‘poetry and rhythm of geometrical shapes’. The constant and complex interplay of light on the land and sea offers limitless opportunities for creative expression. I try to make images with a timeless quality that provoke an emotional response from the viewer. I shoot and post process in the digital darkroom using a variety of tools.

My aesthetic focus in my photography is to create simple, balanced compositions that suggest rather than document my environment and converting an image to black and white often helps me to distil and clarify a scene. To make this particular piece of my street in Preston, Lancashire, where I lived at the time- I stood at the corner of the road and observed the light from the streetlights, vehicle and bikes over a period of thirty minutes. During that time I took around ten exposures, each time varying the exposure and timing environmental factors. The resulting image was not pre-visualised and rather instinctive to provide a true representation of the energy and vibrancy of the scene.

Living in Suffolk for over 30 years I have come to love it’s rural diversity, and the honesty of it’s ‘locals’. Working with nature all my carrier I realize our past actions are catching up with us, unless we radically change our environmental values we face a very uncertain hold on this planet.

In this painting I represent the earth as an atlas confiscated by some universal auditor or prefect. Hung alongside echoed images from other parallel dimensions in the ‘cloakroom of time’ it represents our destruction of natural resources we need to live on our planet, e.g. water, air, oil and ecosystems. Influences are drawn from Dali’s “The Metamorphosis of Narcissus”, and the use of folded media is inspired by Angela Del La Cruz in her use of deconstructed canvases and folded surfaces.

“We launched ‘From the Studio Floor’ at Anise Gallery in Bermondsey where we displayed a collection of various artwork from London artists. It was so successful, with such momentum building around the concept we wanted to grow the exhibition nationally, Suffolk- with such a rich history of arts in the area seemed the perfect place to start. With the hundreds of applications to the show we received, we feel here in Gallery 3 we have a great collection of what the region has had lying around on its studio floors.”
