no comments for each subject area. I strongly encourage allparents to take the opportunity to have an interview with theteachers on the Parent-Teacher Interview Evening in early Term3. Parents can also keep a track of their student’s progressin their Student Diary. Twice a term the teachers release datato the students to inform them of how they are progressingtowards their goals. Students are to track their progress in theirStudent Diary and record their teacher’s comments on howthey can improve.

This term has seen some outstanding school events. I wouldlike to acknowledge the hard work of The Arts Department andHospitality staff in organising the Theatre Restaurant and Bandfor the 2018 Fanfare regional festival. The Woree State SchoolAthletics Carnival at Barlow Park is fast approaching with manystudents preparing before and after school with our HPE andClontarf staff. Students have been on many excursions, camps, field trips, competitions, careers markets, clubs and programs, and sporting activities both during and after school. The schoolis certainly a busy place with staff willing to go the extra mile todo the best for the students.

Mr Matthew Eagle: Visiting

Architect

Woree State High School had thepleasure of hosting Mr Matthew Eagle,a Gold Coast architect visiting ourregion. Mr Eagle presented a lectureregarding the field of architecture andpossible pathways to studentsinterested in STEM. Students in theSTEM subject areas were invited tolisten to Mr Eagle speak about the

beauty of architecture and design. He displayed manywonderful examples of his work and future projects. Studentswere given the opportunity to ask Mr Eagle questions regardingarchitecture and what it means to study it at university. It wasamazing to learn the wide range of skills an architectpossesses. It’s not just building! Mr Eagle explained that anarchitects role is to improve the way people live and interactwith their environment, whether it is inside or outside.

It was wonderful to see our students embrace new knowledgeand I believe Mr Eagle left an excellent impression on ourstudents.

Congratulations are in order for ourYear 12 Senior debaters who are veryexcited to have won their way throughto the semi-finals of the Cairns TrinityRotary Debating Competition.Keturah, Joyce and Connor had toargue against the proposal ‘Thatwomen need men like a fish needs abicycle.’ An interesting debate to say

the least. Up against St Monica’s, our students knew theywould be in for a battle and battle they did, right the waythrough to victory. I would like to praise all the team (includingKaitlain, our able reserve and researcher) for the absolutededication they have shown to achieving well in the debatingcompetition. This team has given up lunch hour after lunchhour, time after school, time on the weekend to come to school(YES!) and time on public holidays to come to school (YES,again!) That is commitment and their improvement as publicspeakers has been dramatic. Well done on your win Seniors,we are very proud of your efforts in representing Woree StateHigh School with distinction.

Year 10’s were first toenjoy an interactive and humorousrendition of Romeo and Juliet. Year9’s show was the tense and scaryAustralian Ghost Stories, whichcovered the creepy side of a range ofindigenous and traditional bushpoetry. Year 11’s watched the finalshow of the day – a verbatim play, which recounted the exact words of

real people interviewed about a young man’s drug overdose inToowoomba. All three shows were captivating and entertainingand our students participated well.

Early Childhood Studies

Independent Excursion to

Family Day Care South

Students in the Early ChildhoodStudies class have theopportunity to visit a childcarevenue to participate in activitieswith children. This will enablethem to gain a betterunderstanding of what a day atwork with children looks and feelslike. The students will beconducting an assessment

activity with children which will assist them in their planning andpreparation.

Recently Jaymee-Lee and Claire visited the Family Day CareSouth Playgroup. Both students thoroughly enjoyed their day, participating in a variety of activities with the children. Thechildren love to have “big kids from the big school” to talk toand play with, so it is a fun day for everyone.

Many thanks to the staff at Family Day Care South for agreeingto participate in this program to provide such a wonderfulexperience for our students.

SchoolTech

Aviation Australia Visit

The Year 11 SchoolTech Electricalclass were fortunate enough tovisit the Cairns Aviation SkillsCentre (CASC) of AviationAustralia.

Students were inspired by the newopportunities Aviation Australia

offers to young people in the field of electrotechnology. TheCertificate IV in Aeroskill Avionics, qualifies a person to work onelectronic systems in aircraft. SchoolTech students studyingElectrotechnology in Year 11 and 12 are well placed to moveinto this certificate course.

“Modern aircraft heavily depend on electronics in theircommunications, navigation and auto flight systems, to namea few. It’s imperative that an avionics engineer does their jobcorrectly” states Curtis Midgley former student of CairnsAviation Australia.

In the hangar at Hawker Pacific our students were lead througha QANTAS Link plane that had been gutted for its 8000 hourservice. All internal fittings were removed so that the wiringand electronics could be checked completely. Students wereshown an aircraft control panel and the complexities of landingsystems.

This trip was a fascinating and eye-opening experience forall our students. Opportunities in Electrotechnology extend farbeyond wiring houses. The sky is the limit!

Science

Woree State High School Year 11 Aquatics classes visitedHolloway’s Beach Environmental Centre for water testing andto look at biodiversity. Our goal was to test their aquariums, alocal Woree creek and saltwater aquatic systems. Our findingsshowed that all three aquatic systems were healthy withminimal water pollution. However, there were signs of erosionand litter. We really liked going to Holloway’s Beach becausewe got to see a variety of different species of birds, mangrovehabitats and water creatures. We also liked cruising thewaterways in the centre’s boats. We learnt about the waterprocess and the importance of water systems from mountainsto the reef.

Once in a High School Life

On the 21 April, Woree State High School was one of the fewhonoured schools that was offered a once in a high school lifeto cruise up and down the Trinity Inlet, exploring the wonders ofthe mangroves and the spectacular creatures within it.

Being able to grab an opportunity like this was like trying to finda green tree snake among the mangroves by the Inlet. Did youknow, that in 2015, two new species of mangrove trees werefound by a Japanese ecowarrior, who is in fact a local Cairnsresident? We were expecting some sort of famous scientist tofigure that one out, not an enthusiastic amateur.

Altogether, the day was pretty awesome, we never knew thatlearning could be such fun. Well, we never expected ourteachers to be right about it, is what we mean! Being able toadd new information to your own brain is something remarkableand sometimes enjoyable, and we wouldn’t have done thatwithout the wonderful adults in which assisted us in doing so.

On behalf of the Woree students who participated in the cruisewe would like to give a special thanks to Graham, Tarina andBrontie (Cairns Rotary Club), Anthony (Boat Captain), Mr.Colwell and Ms. Hardaker, our supervising school staff andfinally the Big Cat boat crew for all their kind, generosity andhospitality in allowing us to explore the wonders of the TrinityInlet. We all enjoyed it, and I’m sure for many years to come, future students will enjoy it as well.

Each Friday a group of Year 8’s havebeen participating in a slightly differentHPE experience. These students havehad a lot of fun exploring some of thesafe walking tracks around Cairns. Many of the students had not realisedwhat Cairns has to offer and have beenvery surprised by some of the newsights they have been exploring.

With the help of Miss Gillian and MissLynne, the students pack their ownbags with hats, water bottles, mosquitospray and sunscreen lotion before they

head off in the SEP mini bus.

The Boardwalk at the airport was one of the most interesting yetleast popular visits, due to the mosquitos being the size of fliesand swarming by the hundreds. Goomboora Park and walkingalongside the sugar cane field was an enjoyable experience, aswas a walk amongst the famous sunflower field in Freshwaterand the Botanical Gardens are always lovely as well as theWharf and the Esplanade precincts.
