From the Principal’s desk….. December will prove to be a very busy month. Boys’ basketball has begun, our annual canned food drive is underway, the band, orchestra and choir have concerts planned, and, in spite of these activities, we expect our students to continue the good academic work they have been doing. Please talk with your child about working hard, staying organized, and being prepared for class each day. Your encouragement and support is very important to your child’s success. I have sent letters to a number of families regarding our after school tutoring program. We have targeted students who are experiencing academic difficulties in either math or English or both. A portion of the hour is designated for help with homework while the remainder of the time is spent working on skills that our data indicates the student is experiencing difficulty. If you received a letter earlier this year and your child is not enrolled in tutoring, please talk with him/her about taking advantage of this opportunity. Bus service is provided. If your child is attending or will be attending, it is important that he/she has regular attendance and puts forth the effort necessary to be able to demonstrate success. As we are faced with the high stakes testing that determines whether or not a child graduates, it is important to take advantage of every opportunity for additional academic support. Please feel free to call me if you have questions. As you plan your holiday shopping, it would be helpful to include a few school supplies. Our students are beginning to run out of pens, pencils, and paper. These things often make good stocking stuffers. Also, as you purchase clothing, please keep in mind our dress code. We are still having difficulty with a few girls wearing tops that are too low. The weather will turn cold soon so plain sweaters or sweatshirts would be appropriate gift ideas as well. As a reminder, this year students are able to wear college sweatshirts. Best wishes for an enjoyable holiday season! Luann Spicer
Mopps Musings….. December is a very busy time of the year for athletics at Test Middle School. The Tiger boy’s basketball teams go through a difficult stretch with two tournaments and two or three games per week. We have an awesome coaching staff in place and they are working hard to prepare the young men to become better basketball players. The girl’s teams are working hard as well. We have girls who have never played basketball coming out and trying to learn new skills. Every practice shows determination and fortitude. Studies show that students involved in extra curricular activities tend to do better in academics. We check grades every two weeks and the coaches check weekly to make sure our Tiger athletes are on track. ROAR is going terrific. Our students work hard at achieving expectations that are set for them. Even when students have hiccups with discipline, they still try hard to work towards accomplishing behavioral goals. For the remainder of December we are focusing on being organized. Starting in January we will start looking at having students be accepting of others. Please ask your children how things are going at Test. Just by asking, your children will know that you have an interest in their lives. Thank you for all your support. If we can be of any service to you, please let us know.
Counselors Corner….. When we return in January, 8th graders will start the process of thinking about their Freshman classes at the high school. We will examine the Curriculum Guide, get teacher recommendations, discuss electives, credits, and graduation requirements. Students will tour the high school Career Center classes and see an overview of the high school. By mid March, schedules should be completed, and students may consider summer school choices. Forms will come home for parent signatures before we are finished. We will offer times for parents to come in for individual help and/or concerns.
PTO News…… Thanks to those that contributed to the PTO NoStuff/No Fuss fundraiser! You can still contribute at any time. Next PTO meeting is January 24th at 4 p.m. in the Test conference room. We would love to see some new faces. Test Dads….. Test Dads meet the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Test conference. Come check us out! A Test Dad is any positive male role model. You don’t have to been the parent of Test student.
