This edition of “From the Principal’s Desk” highlights the fun and excitement we experienced in the past few weeks. Appreciation goes to students and staff who have been working really hard in programmes and activities in which meaningful learning has taken place.

Though 2017 is already behind us, we should count our blessings in the past year and continue to be grateful for what we have, and are going to have. After the long Christmas and New Year holiday, January 2018 is a very busy month. Students are wrapping up the first term studies and preparing for the examination and teachers marking and evaluating the learning outcomes. I cheer them while they are working hard towards their goals.

As Principal, I am looking forward to another rewarding year that we will continue on our path to reach new heights in the provision of quality education for students at HLC.

Foundation Day

The Foundation Day cum Opening Ceremony of the Black Box Theatre and the HLC Gallery took place on 1st December. Ms Lee encouraged HLCians in the Round-the-School-Race, welcomed the additional creative space for students and also the gallery which reflects the history of HLC. The whole day was very exciting with the student decorated kite competition being a particular favourite.

Organic farming course

HLC Global Week was FUN! During the global picnic our students shared their food with guests and in exchange were exposed to delicacies and activities with people from different countries. This interaction stimulated their curiosity into different cultures and ways of life.

In S5 History English and Geography lessons people of many different nationalities shared the rites and customs of their respective countries with our students.

Watoto - Signs and Wonder

Watoto Children’s Choir performed its exciting “Signs and Wonder” concert for HLC students who could feel the happiness and joy radiated by the dancers and singers. All of them were Ugandan orphans or vulnerable children representative of millions of similar youngsters still living in Africa. Their vibrant contemporary music and dance brought a story of hope. The children shared stories of how they had come out of the darkness into a life of purpose and joy. Members of

audience were delighted at their salvation and aware of how few benefits these children had in comparison to our students.

Blood Donation Day Many senior form students donated blood during HLC’s 1st Blood Donation Day held by the Hong Kong Red Cross. Every single donation can potentially help up to 3 or more patients so please participate next year!

Library Book Display - Roald Dahl-

The Library and English Department co-organised a display of Roald Dahl’s works during Global Week. Through the activity students learnt more about this great English children’s writer. Students also were rewarded with wine gums on completion of a simple quiz.

The BookCrossing

The Chinese Literature Department and HLC Library are co-organizing “the BookCrossing”. Books are placed around the campus. Students select a book to read and input their comments. We aim to, through this whole-year activity, promote a reading atmosphere, encourage students to share their reading experiences and create a reading community.

HLC debaters completed Round 1 of Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition. 5C Chan Wing Sum (Alice) and 3C Chan Wing Lam (Athena) were named the Best Speakers in the debate.

The Prefect Team joined a two-day camp

organised by the YMCA. The aim was to enhance

their communications skills and foster team spirit. They had to co-operate to overcome a number of challenging

tasks and the accomplishment they

found was both satisfying and

enjoyable.

Six BAFS students won the merit award at the Creative Cube Competition 2017 (「民

間‧港‧故事」之港生活‧港快

樂中學生創業比賽) orgnised by

TWGH. They had a chance to set up their own business and needed to handle everything from product design to merchandising. During the two-week competition, they had to run a stall and present their ideas to the judges. The rationale behind their product was to help recall moments in daily life which make people smile and yet are so often forgotten. They merge the memories into our daily necessities to make it even more meaningful.

Visit Gingko House Our Liberal Studies and Moral Education students visited the

famous Gingko House ( 銀杏館 ),

where the elderly shared their experiences with our students. What a fruitful day!

Our Swimming Team was first runner up in the Boys Grade C division and broke the record in the 4x50m Medley Relay in the Yuen Long District Inter-School Swimming Championships.
