Newsleer JUNE Right of the month: JUNE 2019 FROM THE HEADTEACHER’S DESK Gowerton School Cecil Road Gowerton Swansea SA4 3DL Gowerton School @gowertonschool That evening a ‘vintage 40s party’ was held at the local community centre. Kathleen de Cleene, the organiser of the events commented ‘ although the loss of Penry Guy’s life was very sad it has enabled the community of Asch and Gowerton School to form a wonderful friendship. We are pleased something posive can come from such a tragic loss.’ On the weekend of June 21st/22nd a group of pupils and staff travelled to Belgium to take part in the 75th anniversary commemoraon for an ex-pupil of Gowerton School, Penry Guy, who died in acon during World War 2. On June 21st 1944 his plane was on a bombing raid but was hit by enemy fire. As pilot he enabled his 6 crewmen to jump to safety and avoided the Belgian village of Asch before the plane crashed. G. Penry Guy came from Penclawdd. He was a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Re- serve who, by June 1944, was a Pilot Officer fly- ing Lancaster Bombers. The community of the village of Asch organised a series of formal events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Penry Guy’s death. ARTICLE 6: The right to life and to be healthy. PENRY GUY 75TH ANNIVERSARY The weekend commemoraons started on the Friday with an informaon film about the heroism of Penry Guy. On the Saturday aſternoon services were held at the graveside and the memorial. Pupils from the music department, led by our Head of Music, Ms Kathryn Jones, performed at both events. The vocal trio, Josie Daniel, Maisie Grey and Caitlin Rees performed a beau- ful, highly emoonal, a cappella song. This was fol- lowed by the brass quartet, Ellie Carlsen, Eloise Denny, Alice Tracey and Aiden Stannard playing a beauful version of Abide with Me. At the memorial Ellie also performed the Last Post. All present were visible emoonal at the fing tribute given. How quickly the time has flown and how much we have once again achieved this year. We are still very busy in the final month of the term with visits from our year 5 partner primary schools and also all our year 6 pupils. They have en- joyed team building, making pizza and keyrings and making new friends. Here are some of the events of the recent month.

YEAR 11 PROM

The end of June seen our Year 11 Prom. There was a truly fantastic turnout by pupils and staff with some outstanding outfits and vehicles on dis-play on the evening. A full gallery of photographs can be found on the school website.

MR PHORMULA VISITS GOWERTON!

A selection of pupils from years 7-9 went to Os-mington Bay, Weymouth for a fun filled, sunny weekend at the PGL Camp. Pupils took part in a range of activities like quad biking, abseiling, rock climbing and lots more! Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and thanked the staff for organising such an amazing experience.

PGL RESIDENTIAL

Ed Holden aka Mr Phormula, Welsh beat boxer, visited Gowerton School today and worked with approximately 200 Key Stage 3 pupils over 5 sessions.

HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT

All pupils have been given a school water bot-tle which they can refill at the water fountains around the school. In an attempt to reduce our plastic waste, the canteens will no longer sell drinks in plastic bottles!

WHITE ROOM EXHIBITION

The Art, Photography and D&T annual exhibi-tion of pupils' work held at the Grand Theatre was once again an overwhelming success. It was wonderful to pupils, families, governors and staff experiencing the pride of seeing pupils’ work exhibited
