ACADEMICSIIT Kanpur follows a two-semester system. The academicyear runs from July toApril. Thefirstsemester begins by last week of July & ends in last week of November. The second semester starts in last week of December & ends in last week of April. A semester load is equivalent of 16 units. Most courses carry 4 units while a few carry 3 or 5 units.

The Dean of Academic Affairs (DOAA) heads the academic administration of the institute. The institute offers many courses in various disciplines of engineering, science & humanity, both at UG & PG levels.

These programs are planned & implemented by the academic senate through Senate UG committee (SUGC) & Senate PG committee (SPGC). In addition, the senate has other standing committees viz., the Senate Scholarships & Prizes Committee (SSPC) & Senate Students' Affairs Committee (SSAC). All committees have representatives from the IITK student community.

Examination System

The Institute follows a continuous evaluation model through a credit system in all its programs. The student is awarded a letter grade for each course for which he/she is registered. There is no annual or semester pass or fail; however, a student has to satisfy a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) & earn credit requirements to be eligible for the award of degree. In certain unavoidable circumstances, a student may be allowed to give a make-up examination.

Grading System

Each course is assigned a numerical weight. Each letter grade carries numerical points. A list of these letter grades is given in Table 1.

For courses without any numerical grading, students are awarded either S (satisfactory) or X (unsatisfactory) letter grade depending upon the instructor's assessment of student's progress in the semester.

The performance of a student is evaluated at the end of each semester in terms of weighted average of grade points secured in all registered courses for that semester & is known as Semester Performance Index (SPI).

The Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) represents the weighted average of grade points secured by student in all the semesters up to & including the last semester.

The method of calculation is same as SPI except that F grade which has been replaced by a pass grade is ignored in the calculation.
