FROM THE PRESIDENT It’s hard to believe that the year is half over. And what a great year it has been for our club and members. In many respects, it’s very similar to last year, ONLY BETTER! We continue to break membership re- cords and the Hickory Chapter has scheduled more golf outings than ever before. In June we enjoyed a joint- chapter outing with Asheville at Silver Creek and in July, we will host 80 players at Rock Barn, the 4th best new course in the USA. Regional events are also on the increase. Our members and guests have access to whatever types of golf they like to play - weekly 9 & Dines, local one-day outings, and multi-day events out of town –and enjoy a variety of inter- esting, challenging formats. GENERAL MEETING in June

Twelve (12) members (Bill L., Clau-detta, Judy, Richard, Betty, Larry Hollifield, Joanne, Anne, Lib, John L., Peggy, and Wayne) and one (1) guest – Sarah Emble - attended the Hickory Chapter’s regularly scheduled, monthly meeting on Thursday, June 7, 2007, at the Oyster Bar/Ramada Inn at 6:30 pm, with Bill Lautzenheiser presid-ing.

President Bill welcomed everyone to the meeting, acknowledged the May birthdays, distrib-uted the agenda/calendar, and encour-aged attendance by all board-elected/appointed members at the next board meeting on June 27th.

Treasury Bill L. (per Diane) reported a beginning balance for May of $805.46. With reve-nues of $130.00 and expenditures of $41.34, the ending May balance was $894.12. Membership Betty reported a membership of 52, with packages being sent to three (3) new prospects. The roster was updated on June 6, 2007.

Socials Richard will host a pool party on Satur-day, July 7 th to commemorate Independ-ence Day, with members/guests provid-ing snacks, side items, etc. Betty will coordinate with the membership. Clau-detta and Richard conducted the 50/50 raffle, with the club earning $65 in the drawing. The group enjoyed dinner, drinks, music, and dancing.

SATURDAY GOLF in June Twenty-two (22) members/guests of the Hickory and Asheville ASGA’s (Phil, Rich-ard, Virginia, Peggy, Dennis Lewis, Lucy, Ann B., Judy, Jim, Sarah, Hank, Larry Hollifield, Ron, Karen, Ed Younger, Wayne, Ella Rae, Terry, Bill L., Claudetta, Bill Crawley, and Pete) competed in a Captain’s Choice round at Orchard Hills Golf Club on Saturday, June 9, 2007. Thanks to Wayne Sisk for coordinating the event!

Communications Judy reported media coverage of the May outings and will submit news from the June events. She circulated the scrapbook and asked members to clip/save articles. Inform Judy of im-promptu events and area charity tour-naments for publication in the newslet-ter.

Golf Bill L. announced the upcoming events for June (Orchard Hills-9th, River Crest-24th, Silver Creek-30th, and the Tuesday Nine & Dines). Judy distributed informa-tion and a sign-up sheet for the July 14th Joint Chapter Golf Outing at Rock Barn Golf & Spa and encouraged mem-bers to make their commitments early for the 80-person shotgun event. Volun-teers are still needed to host the sched-uled Saturday/Sunday golf dates in 2007.

CAROLINA/TENNESSEE CHALLENGE

Eleven (11) members of the Hickory Chapter of ASGA (Joanne, Bill L., Dana, Betty, Kim, Terry, Ann B., Brenda, Richard, Claudetta, and Judy) partici-pated in the 8 th Annual Carolina/Tennessee Challenge on June 15-17, 2007 – a multi-chapter event sponsored by the Nashville Chapter of ASGA in Ko-dak, TN. Several of the attendees began their weekend with an optional round of golf on Friday afternoon.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of restau-rants on Friday evening before returning to the Dumpling Valley Best Western for music and dancing poolside.

Saturday morning brought combinations of breakfast, sun bathing, shopping, flea markets, and/or lunch prior to the 2:00 pm shotgun “challenge” at the River Is-lands Course. Winning their Ryder cup-style competitions to help claim victory for

Judy and Richard won 2nd and 3rd places in their flights in Sunday’s play at Dandridge on their respective teams, with Judy also earning a “closest to the pin” in individual performance.

The Hickory Chapter participants ex-tend their appreciation to Bob Blaylock and the Nashville Chapter for their usual hard work and generous hospitality.

SUNDAY GOLF in June Twenty (20) members and guests of the Hickory Chapter of ASGA (Larry Hefner, Dana, Ron, Joanne, Pete, Anne, Richard, Judy, Phil, Lucy, Don, Claudetta, Larry Hollifield, Mike, Bill L., Betty, Sarah, Michael, and guests – Charles McManus and Tom Bell) competed in a Captain’s Choice round at River Crest Golf & Country Club on Sunday, June 24, 2007.

The teams mounted their strategies as they used a “cut the string” gimmick to improve play – rather than “mulligans”. Earning cash for 1st place with a round of “56” was the foursome – Dana Biehler, Ron Williams, Larry Hefner, and Joanne Harvey. Also win-ning prizes for individual skills were (longest drives) Lucy McCall and Ron Williams; and (closest to par three pins) Mike Roane, Joanne Harvey, Claudetta Potts, and Charles McManus.

Many of the participants met for din-ner at Backstreets after play. Thanks to Bill Lautzenheiser for hosting the outing, which proved to be filled with fun and strategy for everyone!

BOARD MEETING in June Board members (Joanne, Bill L., Judy, Betty, Claudetta) and members-at-large (Brenda, Gary, Harry) met on Wednes-day, June 27, 2007 at Round Wheels Lounge/Holiday Inn Select. They com-pleted the planning for the July outings, focusing in particular on volunteers to assist with the Rock Barn outing on July 14th. They also set up a joint outing with UpState SC on July 29th.

Brushy Mtn. – June 11th In an impromptu game, scheduled by Larry Hollifield, the team of Wayne, Bill L., and Claudetta defeated Betty, Larry, Joanne, and guest Kim Sherrill, in a handicapped best ball format. Their game was shortened by a thunderstorm after 15 holes.

DARE Tournament – June 19th After a BBQ lunch, the team of Joanne, Kim, Larry Hefner, and Larry Hollifield participated in a Captain’s Choice charity tournament sponsored by the Alexander County Sherriff’s Dept. at Brushy Mtn. Golf Club. Although their impressive “12 under par” round wasn’t enough for a win, Larry Hollifield did win the “closest to the par 3 pin” on Hole #8 to earn $25 cash and a new golf bag; and then won a love-seat in the raffle.

Catawba Springs – June 21st Larry Hollifield, Mike Roane, Anne Spivey, Brenda Haupt, and Terry Burke joined Bill Lautzenheiser at Lake Hick-ory Country Club on guest day. Larry, Brenda, and Anne won the big bucks by defeating Terry, Mike, and Bill in a best ball round. The fierce competition was followed by a round of cool drinks on the outside veranda.

NEW MEMBERS/PROSPECTS It was a record month for new mem-bers – Sarah Emble, Mike Roane, Vickie Kirby, Harry Heavner, Teresa Spears, and Michael McManus. Wel-come to all of you; ASGA will change your life! Other prospects (who may have joined us already) are Kim Sherrill, Craig Habeck, and Wayne Self.

COME ON DOWN! Members of the Hickory Chapter of ASGA take many opportunities to get together around town at restaurants, lounges, nightclubs, wine festivals, and at each other’s homes. The membership will be notified of all impromptu socials; and, guests are certainly welcome!

COUPLES TOURNAMENTS Brushy Mountain Golf Club in Taylors-ville will again host Couples Tournaments on one (1) Sunday per seasonal month this year. The format will be Captain’s Choice 2-person, male/female teams - shotgunning at 1:15 pm, $50/couple. Call the club directly to sign up at (828) 632-4804. Joint-Chapters at Rock Barn – July 14th The Hickory Chapter of ASGA will host a joint-chapter golf outing on Sat-urday, July 14, 2007, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa on the Championship Jones Course for $60 + $5 ante (regular $75) in a 2:00 pm shotgun with a limit of 80 players. Participants may choose from two formats (Captain’s Choice or Own Ball) and will have op-portunities of winning cash/prizes for team & individual scores, longest drives, par three’s, 50/50 raffle, and numerous other door prizes. Snacks and bottled water will be provided. Payment for golf will be by cash or check only (no credit cards) and sub-mitted at a designated registration area outside the pro shop. Checks are pay-able to Rock Barn Golf & Spa. Contact Judy to register at judy_elmore@ charter.net or (828) 381-0776. Special pairings must be requested at the time of registration. Dinner afterward will consist of a Deli Buffet (meats, cheeses, breads, chips, slaw, potato & fruit salads, and dessert) held at a patio area outside the main clubhouse at a cost of $14/person (plus 6.75% tax and 20%) – around $18.00 total, with a cash bar. ASGA members/guests also have the option of playing Rock Barn’s Jackson

Course on Sunday, July 15th, for $50 (regular $65), but must arrange their own tee times at the pro shop by phoning (828) 459-1125 and stating that they are ASGA. Sug-gested overnight lodging is at the Holiday Inn Express, (828) 465-7070, nearby.

Nine & Dine – Tuesdays The Nine & Dines (9 holes of golf dur-ing the work week, followed by drinks/dinner) will be played in July on Tuesdays at Hampton Heights on the 3 rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st beginning at 5:30 pm for $13 + $2 ante; $1 beer, free soft drink. The pairings will be designated and the format will be announced at each event. Please note the time change!

Board Meeting – July 25th The Board of Directors’ elected/appointed officers will meet on Wednes-day, July 25, 2007, at the Round Wheels Lounge/Holiday Inn Select, I-40 & Lenoir-Rhyne Blvd, at 6:00 pm. Sunday, July 29th – Hickory with Up-State, SC, at Meadowbrook in Ruther-fordton. MULTI-CHAPTER EVENT North/South Challenge The Myrtle Beach Chapter of ASGA will host the annual North/South Challenge at Brunswick Plantation, Calabash, NC, on July 20-22, 2007. The standard $185 package (4 persons in 2-BR condo) in-cludes 2 nights lodging, 3 rounds of golf (Diamondback, River’s Edge, & Bruns-wick), Friday night hospitality (free wine & beer), Saturday luncheon, and prize money. Labor Day Weekend

The UpState SC Chapter of ASGA will host its annual multi-chapter golf outing on Labor Day Weekend, August 31-September 2, 2007, in Santee, SC. The standard $170 pack-age (double occupancy) will include 2 nights lodging, 2 rounds of golf, prizes, 2 buffet breakfasts, Friday reception, and Saturday cookout. The event will accom-modate 160 golfers and additional lodg-ing and/or golf may be purchased. Cape Cod Week-

end The Central Massachusetts Chapter of ASGA will host a multi-chapter func-tion at the Ocean Edge Resort in Brew-ster, MA, on September 14-16, 2007 (tentatively). Tampa Bay Fall Fling Held at the Mission Inn Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills, FL, on October 19-21, 2007, this $355 standard package (double occupancy) multi-chapter event includes 2 nights lodging, 2 rounds of golf (El Campeon & Las Colinas), prize money, 2 breakfasts, 1 dinner, and all resort fees, taxes, gratuities. $100 de-posit due by July 27th. See website for registration. Myrtle Beach Shootout Co-hosted by the Nashville and Myr-tle Beach Chapters of ASGA, this multi-chapter event will be held on November 16-18, 2007. NATIONAL EVENT New Year’s in Tampa Hosted by ASGA National, this outing will be held at the Hyatt Tampa Bay on December 29, 2007, through January 1, 2008. Complete details will be avail-able in mid-August.

GREATER HICKORY CLASSIC The Greater Hickory Classic – a Senior PGA Tour of Champions event – will be held for the 5 th consecutive year at Rock Barn Golf & Spa on September 10-16, 2007. play golf than at 10:00 to mow the yard.

• Sometimes it seems as though your cup moveth over.

• A good drive on the 18th hole has stopped many a golfer from giving up the game.

• Golf is the perfect thing to do on Sunday because you always end up having to pray a lot.
