From the Executive Director of Support Dogs...

To The Dedicated Donors, Volunteers, Clients, and Staff of Support Dogs, Inc.: This past year has been one of progress and forward thinking for everyone involved with Support Dogs, Inc. I humbly thank all of our donors who continue to provide the financial means to allow the organization to consistently provide the quality programming we are able to offer. I also am sincerely grateful for the dedicated volunteer core that not only come together to help offer consistent programming, but help us to grow and exceed programmatic goals set by the organization. Working together, everyone has helped to solidify Support Dogs’ position in the community and beyond. The Building Opportunities Capital Campaign continued to be successful during this past fiscal year as well. As of the end of the fiscal year (June 30), the Campaign raised $3,288,831 toward its goal of $3.5 million. With that being said, the organization did receive a challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation in the amount of $435,000. The grant stipulated that if Support Dogs could raise $3.065 million, the grant would be awarded and allow the organization to meet its goal. I am happy to say that this condition was met and the organization expects to receive the funds later in the year, adding to the $3,288,831 total. While running the Campaign, operations were well maintained within budget, thus once again showing that our donors believe in what we do today and are invested in making the future happen for Support Dogs. Considering the current programming and infrastructure, efforts were made to better align the staff’s responsibilities through revisions to job descriptions, allowing staff to be more effective in their positions. And the organization continues to forge forward with building partnerships with other local non-profits, sharing resources and knowledge, all to better help Support Dogs serve its populations effectively. In addition, more emphasis is being put on staff development and education to expand on the talent currently within the organization and to set the staff up for success in their professional roles. In an effort to continue preparing for future needs and demands placed upon the organization, Support Dogs developed, and the Board approved, a three-year strategic plan that outlines goals and objectives for governance, board development, programs and outreach, financial development and sustainability, and staff development and education. This plan will be the blue print for the organization moving forward to methodically grow our programs and reach more people in the community, while strengthening the in-frastructure of the organization. In summary, Support Dogs is effectively maintaining the balance of providing current programming with the quality and expertise that the community has come to know, all the while preparing for the future of the organization and what will be expected. Growth and change can be unsettling for some, but with the proper preparations and a solid core of donors, volunteers, board, staff, and community partnerships, Support Dogs will grow methodically and deliberately, maintaining the integrity of the organization and its programs well into the future. Again, thank you to everyone who has helped to make our successes possible. 2013 - 2014 Highlights

During this fiscal year, Support Dogs placed 19 assistance dogs, valued at $434,530, at no cost to its recipients. Placements include: 11 Service Dogs with adult individuals with mobility-related needs, three of which were successor dogs. In addition, Support Dogs placed 1 Hearing Dog with an individual who was Deaf or hard of hearing, 3 Psychiatric Service Dogs with military veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and 4 dogs with youth clients to enhance their lives, both physically and emotionally. The TOUCH (Therapy of Unique Canine Helpers) program, which is the volunteer pet assisted therapy program, reached over 76,255 adults and 16,960 children in over 89 facilities in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Volunteers also donated 265 hours to hospice patients. Quality dog acquisition is the beginning stage of any successful assistance dog program. In part, Support Dogs works with specific breeders to ensure the dogs we receive meet the strict health and structure requirements of an Assistance Dog. During this FY, Support Dogs acquired 37 new puppies into the program. Of these, 27 came from our own breeding program, while the remaining 10 were either bought or donated from reputable breeders.

The Paws For Reading program continued to reach students in St. Louis Metropolitan area elementary schools, as well as city and county libraries. The dogs in this program are used as an incentive for the students to read more and read better. Volunteers reached 7,069 students, ranging in grades 1-8. Support Dogs started our second prison program to raise assistance dog puppies at the Southwest Illinois Correctional Center. The male inmates at this prison named this program HHH (Hounds Helping Humans).

As of June 30, the Building Opportunities Capital Campaign had raised over $3,723,831 in cash and pledges. This amount exceeds the $3.5 million goal set by the Campaign by $223,831. Volunteers are the backbone to every program that Support Dogs is able to provide. The organization has recorded 570 active volunteers in the areas of Volunteer Puppy Raising, TOUCH, Paws For Reading, events, office administration, and kennel enrichment. Of these 570 volunteers, 114 were new “recruits” during this fiscal year. Special events for Support Dogs are critical to the support of our services. This past year, the Annual Tacky Ball raised $167,590, the Dogs in the Ruff Golf Tournament raised over $17,240, and the Annual Trivia Night and Silent Auction raised $21,058 for the programs of SDI.
