VOL. 30 NO. 18 May 6, 2020

2020 Theme:

That all may see Jesus.

From The Elders Sunday Meeting: The elders met Sunday morning after worship to discuss Great Oaks’ plans going forward, since parts of our community are beginning to re-open this week. Here is what they decided:

We hope to resume some format for getting back together soon, but for now, we will continue our livestream-only wor-ship next Sunday, May 10. Tentatively, we plan for livestream-only worship also on Sunday, May 17, but we will be watching the community health situation to see if it continues to move in a stable direction. We think it best to keep all options open beyond next week, since the effects of the community re-opening cannot be known at this time.

Governor Lee, Shelby County/Memphis officials, and health officials continue to advise that churches remain online for now. We are praying that all will go well with the re-openings and that we can decide on the best way to begin coming back together for worship soon, in a way that will keep everyone as safe as possible. Please keep our elders, our communi-ty leaders, and our community health situation in your prayers.

Other items discussed:

• We are canceling our June VBS. If the health situation improves, perhaps we can try a 1-day VBS or something similar later this year.

• Our summer youth ministry interns were scheduled to begin on May 17. Instead we plan for them to begin on June 1, even if much of their work may be digital for awhile. Both of our interns have local housing with their families.

• We are studying the full summer schedule at this time with the attempt to salvage or revise as much of our planning as we possibly can considering the present situation.

ENCOURAGING OUR GRADUATES – We still want to honor our graduates this year! See inside this bulletin for the list of graduates. Here’s what we plan to do:

GRADUATE VIDEO - On Sunday, May 17, we plan to show the annual graduate video on our Sunday morning livestream, immediately following the time of worship.

GIFTS FOR THE GRADUATES - If you want to give a gift to our graduates, you can drop gifts off at the building (we have tables set up for the graduates in the lobby like usual), or you can mail it to them directly. Great Oaks always gives Bibles to our high school graduates, and we will do that again, though we may wait to present them later this year.

SOURCES OF STRENGTH – Sunday morning we began a series reminding us that God has always given His people the re-sources to hold them up through difficult times. We began by reminding ourselves of the strengthening power of worship. When we feel stressed or alone or frustrated, let’s take time to worship, and then re-enter the world more ready to live in God’s strength.

As the community begins to try re-opening this week, be praying for good results! We hope to see everyone together again in the not-too-distant future. For now, see you tonight at 7pm on the livestream, and again on the livestream

Sunday morning (Mother’s Day!) at 10am, ready to worship…
