FROM THE EAST Ionic Composite Lodge No. 520 Brethren and Ladies, “By the exercise of Brotherly Love we are taught to regard the whole human species as one family, the high and the low, the rich and the poor, who, as created by one almighty parent, and inhabitants of the same planet, are to aid, support, and protect each other. On this principle Masonry unites men of every country sect and opinion; and causes true friendship to exist among those who might otherwise have remained at a perpetual distance.” The foregoing is the first of the three principal tenets of Masonry. This precept is certainly evident in our Lodge in general, but is particularly relevant to the passing last month of three of our Brothers who were taken from us within days of each other, all of whom were Pillars of our Lodge: Robert Edelman, Michael Glaser and Melville Nahin. Each of these men was so different from one an- other in so many ways. Mel was Grand Master of Masons in California and was a leader of so many Masonic and other charitable organizations, Bob was a Past Master whose activities were severely limited by illness, and Mike never held an elected office, but never missed any Lodge meeting or activity and, along with his wife Rise, was a core leader in Masonic youth programs. These men were also so very different socially, economically and educationally and yet they and we were Brothers, who met on the level, who learned from each other the meaning and history of Masonry and who, but for Ma- sonry, would never have met. All of our lives, but mine in particular, would have been diminished had it not been for the Brotherhood of Freemasonry. Our Lodge and our lives are the poorer for their passing. On April 8, we will host our 43 rd Annual Reception of the Grand Master of Masons in California. As many of you know, our Lodge has the longest history of all Califor- nia Lodges for consecutive Receptions of sitting Grand Masters. This honor is a part of the rich history of Ionic Composite Lodge. Remember, my Brothers, that reserva- tions for our Stated Meeting dinners are always essential; all the more so when our Grand Master is officially re- ceived. Reservations for the April Stated meeting dinner are mandatory, even if you paid in advance for the year as we need to confirm your attendance and must know your choice of entrée. On May 19, we will be holding our 2 nd Annual Ionic Composite, No. 520, Festive Board. This year we will be honoring Michael and Rise Glaser. Although Mike has passed, his legacy lives on and all the more is worthy of recognition. We look forward to celebrating the many good works of this truly awesome couple. As always, Trisha and I look forward to seeing you. Fraternally, Jeff Bear, P.M., Master

IONIC COMPOSITE LODGE #520April 2013

What a difficult month this past month, both personally and for Ionic Composite Lodge. While the loss of any Mason is a sad eventuality, we lost several great Masons with whom I was close; wonderful individu-als who were still needed for our Lodge and who will always be greatly appreciated.

My deepest condolences to their families.

SOFT AND SAFE TO THEE MY BROTHERS

As we are continuing our exciting Lodge schedule (we have a very full schedule): On April 7th is the Masonic Service Bureau

Breakfast. If you haven’t reserved your place and wish to go, please do so by e-mail to Wor. Jeff, because the seats are limited. The very next day, April 8th, is our Stated Meeting and 43rd annual Grand Master’s official visita-tion. All officers are required to please be in Lodge by 5:00 P.M. sharp so we can open the Lodge and greet our guests. NO excuses please; if there is an emergency, contact me or Wor. Jeff.

We have one more major event coming up. On May 19th is our 2ndannual Festive Board honoring Michael and Rise Glaser. Worship-ful Jeff assigned me as chairman for this event and I’m promising to have very good Mediterranean food and commemorative

Ionic Composite Lodge firing glasses. The price for this fan-tastic event is only $52.00 per person. Advance reservations accompanied by payment in full are required on or before May 13th. I look forward to seeing you in Lodge.

Dear Ladies of Ionic Composite Lodge,

What a great educational and helpful pro-gram we had for the Ladies Program of the March Stated Meeting!! Our own Debbie Bear provided wonderful information and exercises to alleviate those nagging aches and pains in our backs, shoulders and necks.

We discussed so many great ways to help prevent problems from occurring too!!

Thanks so much Debbie!!!! Your presentation was fabulous and the handouts are terrific!

Please don’t miss our next program when the Stated Meeting on April 8th (note the change in date) will host the Grand Lodge Officers and their Ladies!!!!

A delicious dinner plus…traditional ice cream bar will be served!

We have a fun, exciting and provocative pro-gram planned that I know you will not want to miss!!! Following in the theme this year of highlighting our own ladies, Alycia Brewer will be our hostess for a unique Wine Tasting and Seminar!!!!!

I hope you will all join us as we welcome our Grand First Lady Becky Lowe and her Ladies. This will truly be a fun night!!!

Please be sure to have your Masons call for a reservation for dinner as we expect a packed house.

And remember, babysitting is available every Stated Meeting so you can come, relax and really enjoy the fun!!!!

Looking forward to seeing YOU! Trisha Bear, Wife of Jeff Bear, PM, Master

Brethren,

In honor of our Official Visit by our Grand Master at our Stated Meeting on April 8th, I present to you MW John F. Lowe’s Biogra-phy:

147th Grand Master of Masons in California - John Frederick Lowe

Brother John Lowe is a Past Master of Oxnard Lodge No. 341 and of Irvine Valley Lodge No. 671 in Lake Forest. Born in Oxnard, California, John graduated from Moorpark Community College in 1970 with a degree in Liberal Arts and he studied business administration at California State University - Northridge.

A third-generation Mason, Brother Lowe was raised a Master Mason in his fathers’ lodge, Oxnard No. 341 in 1981 and served as Master in 1989. Later, John affiliated with Irvine Valley Lodge No. 671 and served as Master in 2000. He served as Officer’s Coach for both lodges and in 2004 was presented the Hiram Award from Irvine Valley Lodge. John served the lodges in his area as District Inspector from 1990-1993.

Since 1989, he has served on several Grand Lodge committees including the Leadership Development Committee for which he was chairman from 2007 through 2009. John has been a member of the board of trustees for the California Masonic Memorial Temple, the Masonic Homes of California and the Nob Hill Masonic Center; and served as the president of the California Masonic Founda-tion. John served as Junior Grand Deacon for Most Worshipful M. William Holsinger in 2003 and as Grand Orator for Most Worship-ful David R. Doan in 2005. He currently serves as a trustee of the Acacia Creek Ma-

sonic Senior Living Community.

John is a 32º Knight Com-mander of the Court of Honor in the Scottish Rite Valley of Ventura. He is a member of Al Malaikah Shriners in Los Angeles, Dr. Rob Morris Chap-ter Order of the Eastern Star in Santa Monica, the South-ern California Past

Masters Association, the Na-tional Sojourners, Santa Ana – El Toro Chapter, and is also a Hero of ’76. He is a member of all three York Rite bodies in Orange County and the Saint Gabriel Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine. In 2011, he was awarded the DeMolay Honorary Legion of Honor.

Supporting the Department of Defense for nearly 35 years, John is a department manager at Northrop Grumman Corpora-tion leading employees provid-ing logistic support services for both manned and unmanned aircraft.

John and Becky, his wife of 40 years, live in Aliso Viejo, Califor-nia. They have two adult sons, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren.

With all my gratitude, Kevin Morris, P.M., Junior War-den

Peter Eichler has a problem. He is concerned that there will always be people who will not trust him.

For those of you who do not know Mr. Eichler, he, along with his business partner Roger Peiken, began an investment firm known as Aletheia (a Greek word for “truth” or “disclosure”) Research and Management in 1997. By 2008 it had more than ten billion dollars in assets. In that same year, Mr. Eichler took about $33 million in salary; he had already purchased five houses, owned a fleet of luxury cars including a chauffeur-driven Maybach, flew private jets back and forth to Europe, hobnobbed with well-known sports and financial celebrities, and even had Wolfgang Puck cook him dinner one night at one of his homes.

However, by that 2008 high-water year, things were already beginning to go sour. Two years earlier a New York firm that bought 10% of Aletheia sued him for non-payment of $19 mil-lion in dividends. Mr. Eichler also fired Mr. Peiken, who had been the chief financial officer, who in turn sued him and accused Mr. Eichler of charging millions of dollars of personal expenses to the company. These included a $500,000 vacation, hotel suites costing up to $18,000 per night, and $250,000 for wine.

Ultimately Mr. Eichler had to sell most of his homes and cars. In his words, “I had to adjust and

it wasn’t easy.” Finally Aletheia declared bankruptcy in Novem-ber 2012. Interestingly, in the preceding year, Mr. Eichler gave himself 34 bonuses, including nine in August 2012, taking three in one day. Over one 24 hour period, he gave himself $163,000.

In an interview, Mr. Eichler justi-fied the expenses as being one of the things that all top money managers have. He blamed his downfall on other people want-ing to destroy the company. Of course, the exodus of customers was not helped by two Security and Exchange Commission investigations. Now facing a mountain of legal problems, Mr. Eichler says that he wants to manage money in the future, but noted that people will look at him with a jaundiced eye.

I think that Mr. Eichler just doesn’t get it. Of course people will not trust him; would you? Our reputations are usually whatever we make them to be; it is correct for people to believe that past behavior predicts future behavior. Mr. Eichler, welcome to the real world.

Think about it. Ron Koretz, P.M.
