As a kid growing up in East Hawai’i and hanging out with cousins, I remember at a family gathering one of my aunties posed the question, “Hey kids, what do you think are the two most important words in the English language?” With our ‘shrugging shoulders’ response, she glanced into each of our eyes and simply said, “Thank You.” “Thank you,” we asked? “Yes, Thank you.”

Gratitude is one of the most important virtues we have and it’s really an attitude of being grateful, which is probably where the word derived. Unfortunately, especially with our youth, the words “thank you” is often replaced with the words “give me” or “I like.” In time, however, most kids don’t just grow old - they grow up. In growing up, they learn the virtue of gratitude.

As I reflect on my fourth month at Bay, I realize there is so much to be grateful for. Hard working employees, a health center in every major area in East Hawai’i providing a host of health services, a beautiful administration building, a mobile health unit that brings ser-vices to the people, an ‘in-house’ pharmacy that also makes deliveries, services that help women and children, and programs that help people with tobacco and vaping addictions. Bay has always been a ‘giving’ organization which often times provides services to the most needy, without any or little compensation in return. I am so blessed to work for an organization with a mission of service.

As we move into the new year, let’s be grateful for our health and for each other. We live in the most beautiful place in the world with a wonderful mix of cultural diversity of which we all share.

Happy New Year. Please stay safe and connected.

Mobile Health Unit Our Partnership with Hope Services Hawaiʻi

& The New Keolahou Homelesss Center

Bay Clinic is proud to partner with Hope Services

Hawai’i and provide health care services for our

underserved and marginalized homeless community.

This is a profoundly meaningful opportunity for all.

In November, Brandee Menino, Hope Services, Hawai’i

CEO, and other dignitaries joined in a blessing ceremony at

Keolahou ‘Ohana Zone, an initiative funded by the State of

Hawai’i . Keolahou is located at the old Hilo Hospital site at

34 Rainbow Drive, Hilo. It will help homeless individuals

and families access support services, and emergency and

permanent housing.

A few days before Thanksgiving, Bay Clinic’s ‘Mobile

Health Unit’ team, led by Kelly Luscomb, Advanced Prac-

tice Registered Nurse (APRN), partnered with HOPE and

provided primary care to fifteen homeless patients. These patients would

have waited until their health warranted an emergency visit to Hilo Medical

Center. This initiative ensures that those in need have access to high quality

health care and reduces unnecessary emergency room visits.

We are excited to provide our state-of-the-art Mobile Health Unit services

which include:

Bay Clinic Pharmacy 340B Pharmacy Dispensing Program

Keaau Family Health and Dental patients can visit their health care provider and conveniently pick up medications at Bay Clinic’s Pharmacy at the same location. All patients can save time and money and have their medications delivered to their provider’s office by Bay Clinic’s pharmacy. Bay Clinic’s 340B Pharmacy Dispensing Program community partnership offers similar services to all patients.

Bay Clinic delivers medications to Pahoa and Ka’u Family Health Centers so it’s convenient for you.

All patients are eligible.

Uninsured patients may be able to obtain medications at a significantly discounted rate through this program.

Participation in the program can save patients 20% to 50% on the cost of pre-scription medications.

Pharmacies research all your options and provide the best possible price.

Med-Quest (Medicaid) patients already qualify and receive discounted medica-tions and so it is unnecessary to partic-ipate in the 340B Pharmacy Dispens-ing Program.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE ADOPT A CLINIC

Bay Clinic is an eight site federally

qualified community health center

that is a community governed 501c3

serving the districts of Hilo, Puna and Ka`ū. Today our centers are located in the towns of

Hilo, Kea`au, Pahoa, Na`alehu. We serve a geographic expanse of 2,048 square miles of rural,

medically underserved populations consisting of over 100,000 ethnically diverse people – with

over 60% living at or below the federal poverty level. During the year of 2018, Bay Clinic

served approximately 21,196 unique patients across 65,000+ visits.

As we continue to care for all people in our service area regardless of ability to pay, we want to

ensure that we continue looking at ways to enhance the patient experience. One of the best

ways to do this is to partner with charitable organizations such as the Rotary, Chambers, clubs,

religious affiliated outreach programs, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc. ,to enhance the clinic ambance. In

this effort we are launching an “adopt a clinic” campaign.

We have seven clinics to choose from. If your program adopts one of our clinics we will feature

your organization’s photo and name on a beautiful plaque in our clinic’s waiting area. By

adopting a clinic, you get to work with our facilities director to share your ideas on beautifying,

or making comfortable the waiting area. Ideas could include artwork, painting upgrades, tech-

nology upgrades (iPhone charging stations), furniture upgrades, landscape or parking im-

provements, etc. By the way, if there is an eagle scout or high school senior looking to give

back to their community, this is a great opportunity!
