Term 4 Week 4 6th November 2018
Week Focus 4 – we are SAFE at assembly.
From the Deputy Principal: Kindergarten Transition program
Last week we welcomed our new and not so new kindergarten families to our school for the beginning of their transition to school program. WOW, what a great turn out. Our library was bursting at the seams with excited children and parents. The children were fantastic and they interacted extremely well while participating in activities in the classroom. Well done parents and our local pre-schools for having the children school ready at this stage of their lives. The transition program will continue over the next 3 Wednesdays where parents will be hearing from a number of key staff as well as members of our local community and allied health services on ways we will be supporting students throughout their time at MPS.
Year 5 Camp
What a fantastic time the year 5 campers had at
Smiths Lakes. I have heard some wonderful tales of
fun and adventure from students, parents and
teachers. A big thankyou to the teachers who
attended and put in a huge effort away from their
families in order to provide another magical
experience for the students. A big thankyou to the
parent helpers and the huge effort you put in to
ensure that your children and all the children had a
fantastic time. Lastly a big thankyou to all the students
who, as usual, behaved and participated in all
activities in a positive manner that will ensure they
retain wonderful memories of this fantastic camp
experience.
Learning and Support
Last week, Mrs Stephens and Mrs Scowen got to present
MPS’ Learning and Support Team (LST) initiative at the
State Principals Conference. Our LST is set up to provide a
comprehensive range of support and enrichment programs
for all students who have been identified as needing this
support at school. Mrs Stephens was inundated with

Learning and Support Last week, Mrs Stephens and Mrs Scowen got to present MPS’ Learning and Support Team (LST) initiative at the State Principals Conference. Our LST is set up to provide a comprehensive range of support and enrichment programs for all students who have been identified as needing more support in these areas at school. Mrs Stephens was inundated with positive comments from other school leaders on the presentation as well as the successful implementation of these systems and practices. It is wonderful to see our school is becoming a beacon for others to follow.
Enrolments for 2018 We are very much looking forward to welcoming all new families to MPS next year. Please note that all public schools have a catchment boundary. If you are unsure as to which public school your child should attend, please check with the office. Also, if you are planning on leaving MPS at the end of the term, please advise the office.
Thank you to all families for your on-going support of
your children and our school.

From Little Things Big Things Grow!
The only thing we are assured of in life is “Change.” From
the beginning of the Kindergarten year to now, KL
students have certainly changed! Our Science unit for
this term is ‘Changes’. We are observing changes in
weather and keeping a record of the daily weather,
recording morning and afternoon weather in their
weather books. We will be planting bean seeds this week
and keeping a seed diary, observing and recording changes
weekly.
Our news topic last week was how the students have
changed and these were some of their comments;
“I have become a lot braver and I am happy to come to
school.”
“I have grown taller and bigger and can now go on the
flying fox.”
“I have become older and taller and can go on the flying
fox and monkey bars.”
“I have learnt to be kind to my friends and have made
lots of new friends at MPS.”
“I have learnt to read and write and learnt how to do my
personal best.”
I have learnt how to be safe at school and not to run on
concrete.”
“I have lost some of my teeth and my big teeth are now
growing.”
“I can count up to 100 and love Maths.”
I have learnt not to watch too much TV and not to eat too
much junk food.”
I have learnt to hold my pencil properly and write my
letters.”
“I can now play handball and know about halves and
numbers.”
I am very impressed with how students in KL have grown
and changed in all areas of their development!
We have also had some changes on the Canteen Oval this
year.
The beautiful carpet of green grass has replaced a
barren, weed ridden play area. It is wonderful to see
students of all ages enjoying and appreciating this area.
Thank you to the P and C for all their hard work and
dedication in creating this oasis!
After discussions with the environmental team, Mrs
Stephens and Malabar Coal, our dream of a Sensory
Garden has come true. A big thank you to Mr Casey, who
spent many hours constructing the garden beds and
paving the area.
This garden is an outdoor learning
area and a place of respite for all
students to enjoy. Children can
be hesitant about approaching
plants, since they’re so often told
not to touch. Sensory gardens
are an exciting place for students
to connect with nature, because they are actually invited
to touch, rub, smell, listen, look and taste when an adult is
leading a tasting session. Students will develop an
awareness of nature and biodiversity, and responsible and
respectful behaviour in garden environments.
KL and some of our “green thumbs” from the garden club
had a busy time planting up the Sensory Garden with our
kind sponsors from Malabar Coal, Mrs Stevens and Mr
Kerrigan. The Sensory Garden has a wide variety of
vegetables, herbs, flowering plants, edible native plants,
strawberries, citrus trees, wind chimes and some fun
artefacts for the students to enjoy.
The garden club members along with other willing
students will take care and nurture this special place that
we are so fortunate to have.
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank
Donna and her team from
Malabar coal for all their
hard work and generosity
in providing our school
with a beautiful
environmental asset.
All the changes that have happened in KL and at MPS
have been amazing!
