Why were the Vikings such good sailors? You can lead a Norse to water but you can’t make him sink.

Here we are coming into February. Hopefully we have had our once a season snow and we’ve all avoided accidents. Melting snow on your deck and then refreezing at night can be a significant source of damage to your boat. Being a previous Lake Michigan sailor, we all paid dearly each winter to have our boats professionally shrink wrapped by an insured professional who protected us from this damage.

FYC Unsung Heroes

Who are the behind-the-scenes heroes who support every club function, from dinners to special events and cruises? The House Committee! Chaired by Barb Hylton, with support from Ellen Kaiser and Laura Hettich, this trio assures there are ample supplies, and the Galley is ready for every Club activity.

You can help them out with just a few simple steps:• Let them know when we’re running low on

anything (white board on refrigerator)• Check the cabinets and storage closets,

including downstairs for decorations and supplies prior to purchasing items

• Have a plan in case there is leftover food• When you’re done, please return items to

their original location

Should you have any questions, a member of the Committee is more than willing to meet with your team during your planning!

A hardy thanks to our January dinner hosts: John &Kim McCollister, Dick & Fran Moore, David & Elaine York and Rick & Deborah Freytag. A job well done!

I am very pleased to let you all know that Joanne Wilshin (360-707-1130) and Penny McCaughan (360-395-5235) will now be the Special Activities co-chairs for 2020.  We have a lot of on-shore special events planned for the year, so please contact them on how you can help, any questions you have, etc.  Many thanks to Joanne and Penny for volunteering!

Nothing like more than a foot of snow to get you wishing for SPRING, am I right?  FYC has the cure for those winter doldrums... the Spring Fling Fashion Show and Luncheon on March 25.  Jen Mann and models will be showcasing spring fashion from Tides Anacortes, while Pat Thompson and her crew will provide a classy "high tea" and luncheon.  See the flyer in this month's Poseidon for all the details.  This is going to be fun, ladies!

And, to help with Spring - spring cleaning, that is - please consider donating your slightly used but in working condition items for the April 25 garage sale in our parking lot.  Liz and Wayne Weideman and crew will be collecting your items about a week before the sale.  More details to follow.  And, plan on coming to the pancake breakfast the same morning to get fueled up for shopping... special "entertainment" provided by "Ray and The Pancake Flippers" - Lee/Jerry/Dale.  There will be a flyer in the March Poseidon.  More events coming in future months.

Don't forget to sign up for the fabulous and decadent Valentine's Dinner before the cutoff date of February 7!  See the flyer in the Members Only section of our website.

Fun times at the Commodore’s Ball.

In our Wake - 1998

Some “old timers” reminisce about the 1998 wagon wheel picture….. Duane Olive:  Joe and Pat Richter in Secret Harbor on Cypress Island invited the club to cruise to the island and have a party at their house.  Many of us had discussed doing a wagon wheel sometime, but no one had any experience with directly setting one up.  One of Joe's friends owned a 58' Hatteras LRC, Golddigger, and had some experience with building the wheel.  It was decided that he would anchor first and the next 3 largest boats would complete the other 3 principal points of the compass.  Great idea, but....!.  None of our boats came close to the size or displacement of Golddigger.  It soon became clear that wherever she went the wheel was going to go!  Gil Gilbert jumped into his whaler and became the lineman.  He and his volunteers brought boats into the fold.  Of course, some lines were too short, anchors may or may not have been set and sometimes while the process was underway Golddigger had moved the target!  I must say there were a lot of hoots and howls but it was great fun as everyone took the opportunity to putter across the pond to visit friends or attempt to walk stern to stern to see how far they could travel.  As I recall, Joe made arrangements with the pilot that flew the mail to the various islands to do a fly over and take the picture. Ray Ramsay:  Paul Leahy was talking on the radio trying to get people into position and things got heated. While trying to give directions on where to put an anchor, Merle Haines (on Ohiowa) came back with “I’ll tell you where to put that anchor!.. like, up your butt”. Howie Sorensen:  The sunburst / wagon wheel event was a great one.  Particularly when trying to get anchored in the circle.  One of the weekend activities was a golf pitching contest.  I recall it very well as I won it — me, a non-golfer!!
