Wednesday December 14, 2016 From Sue National Track and Field Championships Daisy Flockart from 4C, Banksias and Amber Louw from 5/6B, Casuarinas recently competed at the National Track and Field Championships held in Sydney. They marched with the Victorian team in the Opening Ceremony where they joined athletes from all over Australia. Daisy competed in the heats of the 100 metres. This was a tough heat; Daisy finished in second place just missing the final by one place or 5/100 second. Her final placing was 11 th in Australia! Amber competed in the heats of the 800 metres. Amber just missed the final - also in a tough race and was placed 9 th in Australia! Daisy also raced in the final of the 4x100metres Relay. Running the final leg, an exciting finish resulted in a silver medal to Victoria behind the winners from NSW; the bronze medal went to Queensland. Daisy was awarded her first national medal which is a great honour. This has been a memorable experience for both girls competing against the best athletes in the country. For children to qualify to compete at a national competition requires considerable ability, natural talent and determination to train, not to mention a preparedness to give up leisure time pursuits and family time to reach the required standard. The girls are outstanding athletes and have shown a commendable approach and level of commitment to their sport. Daisy earning a silver medal is an extraordinary achievement! My sincere congratulations go to both Amber and Daisy who have represented Hampton Primary and Victoria with distinction. Year 6 Graduation On Monday night our Year 6s attended their graduation ceremony at Brighton Grammar. The children went to considerable effort with their presentation and looked very impressive indeed. All children worked on speeches and these were delivered with a thematic focus, the underlying rationale for all the speeches was to focus on memorable highlights. The Year 6s worked very effectively on this task and presented their speeches with poise and confidence. Technology and music were interspersed with the speeches which added some variety to the formal component of the night. As each person received a graduation certificate, we had the opportunity to view an image of them from prep alongside a current photo. Some had barely changed at all! The children spoke from the heart and made clear to the audience what has been significant, enjoyable and very memorable. I thank our School Council President, Jamie Smart who addressed the children on the importance of cherishing their primary school memories and friendships; he also presented their graduation certificates. Our school captains and youth ambassadors were the MCs for the ceremony. Congratulations go to Jack Tuffley, Mia Henwood, Ruby Wilson and Olie Horigan for their excellent leadership on the night.

Sincere thanks go to the Year 6 teachers for their efforts in working with the children to prepare for graduation and throughout the year. The teachers have devoted considerable time to the preparation for the reports over a number of weeks; this has included quite a few assessment tasks and numerous discussions with other teachers at the same level to reach agreement on the progression point for each child in each subject. I extend my sincere thanks to all staff for their time devoted to the reports; special thanks to Anne Coburn who has coordinated the assessment and reporting for the whole school, in a large school of 703, this is a logistical challenge.

Staffing I acknowledge and thank the remarkably competent and capable staff at Hampton for another industrious and productive year in 2016. We have numerous talents in our team and a wide spread of experiences that add to the collective capacity of the staff. There is a strong commitment shown to professional learning amongst all staff and in so doing, a preparedness to ‘polish’ their teaching skills. This of course ultimately benefits our children. The leadership team including John Painter, Tim Bernau, Anne Coburn, Lisa Logue and Traci Cenedese, has assumed many responsibilities and carried these out with enthusiasm. I am most grateful to the hours of additional time they have devoted to leadership and management tasks to ensure everything ‘hums’ at Hampton! For the many hours all teachers – classroom teachers and specialists have devoted to planning, preparation and evaluation in school time, after school and on holidays, I extend a huge thank you! Our non-teaching staff provides a fine layer of support to all programs and activities at the school. Our Education Support (ES) staff is multi-talented and often juggles many requirements and tasks at the same time. To our business manager, office assistants, integration aides, grounds managers and technicians – we could not cope without you! Many, many thanks for your attention to detail and your extraordinary support shown. Special thanks go to our out-of-school hours’ childcare team under the excellent co-ordination of Jasmine Tunbridge. The children attending childcare really enjoy the informal atmosphere and the high level of caring supervision provided. Staff resuming from leave: Helen James, previously Mamos is resuming from leave to teach in Grade 3. Louise Jones is resuming from leave to teach in Grade 1. Sim Paul is resuming from leave to teach in Grade 2. Staff remaining on leave on a temporary transfer for 2017: Alison Powell, Cassie Humphreys and Beck Watkins are on Family Leave, Wilson Young is on a temporary transfer. I wish our departing staff the very best for the next 12 months: Rosie Alderman is taking 12 months leave to live in northern Australia accompanying her partner. Helen Farr is taking a temporary transfer to a school closer to her home. Dani Khosh is taking 12 months leave to travel in America accompanying her partner. Fallon Levett will commence maternity leave at the start of 2017. Fallon is pregnant with her second child. My warmest wishes go to both as they approach this very exciting time.

Students Leaving the School The following children are leaving Hampton this year: Aidan Farr, Amy Yang, John Carlos Fletcher, Aidan Tesfai, Sofia Nikitina, Daniela Petris, Katie Yang, Sophie Heath, Kendal Hemp, Josh Fletcher, Zac Smith, Lani Forbes, Kalkin Gomez, Thomas Westerbeek, Tom Tesfai, Orlando Lynch, Mia Kennedy, Rian Pillai and Jay Poort. I wish all children who are leaving a very happy and calm start at their new schools respectively. School Council All councillors have shown a commitment to developing the best possible school environment for our children. I extend sincere thanks to all councillors and members of the committees who give some of their time to support and guide our school. In particular, Jamie Smart as president who provides excellent leadership at the council table and in the community. Special thanks go to our convenors of committees including: John Painter – Buildings and Grounds and Education, James Buckley – Finance, Sarah Rowley* – Fundraising, Kirsty Reynolds – Snack Shack and Ian Hart - Grants. Parents’ Association Our Parents’ Association has continued to support all events and activities with enthusiasm at Hampton under the energetic coordination of Hiliary Hewlett, Kath Blackham, Mary Cole and Nic Jacobs (for the earlier part of the year). The coordinators have continued to focus on effective and streamlined communication between home and school. They have also provided a warm and welcoming forum for brainstorming, sharing ideas, providing feedback and generally encouraging involvement and interest in our school. They have been an industrious and impressive team modelling the notion of sharing the load and utilising various skills to bring a project to fruition. I extend my sincere thanks to Hiliary, Kath, Mary and Nic for their tireless efforts and support for our school. In addition I thank the class representatives, year level coordinators and numerous parents who have regularly attended the PA meetings and supported school functions. Hampton has been enriched by this active involvement and generous spirited support. Music Excursion Well done Dominique Doig, Declan Bakker, Patrick and Oliver Hill, Isaac Pels, Frances O’Driscoll, Audrey Smart, Miranda McLean, Gemma Elliott, Ruby Wilson, William and George Pidduck and Olivia Briggs who played Christmas Carols and led a sing-a-long at Karinya Grove Aged Care Facility in Sandringham today. They were delightful ambassadors for the school, introducing themselves and their instruments to the residents and wishing them a Merry Christmas. This was perfect example of giving back to the community a message that comes directly the Resilience Project.

Last Friday, the finalists for the choreography competition were decided. The standard of the choreography and dancing was very impressive indeed. The quadrangle was crowded with family members and supporters keen to offer encouragement to all teams. The judges had a difficult role to play; they had to consider the complexity of the choreography, the skill in which the design was enacted, synchrony of the team, the level of enthusiasm and concentration evident, use of space and the costuming – to mention a few! My thanks go to Traci for her efforts in organising the competition, conducting the auditions and ensuring everything goes according to plan

Musical Excellence Jared Thomas from 3D, Silver Mallee performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Sunday as part of the Tyros group of the Australian Boys Choir. Jared sang a total of 8 songs. I had the pleasure of attending this concert in person. Jared is pictured in the centre of this group front of stage at this magnificent centre. Some thoughts from Jared: I thought it was very exciting and nerve racking at the same time to be performing on such a big stage. I felt quite hot on stage; one boy collapsed and hit me on the way down. It was really hot wearing the thick gown and the lighting made us hotter. My favourite part was singing O Come All Ye faithful. My grandparents attended too, they arrived from England only 2 days ago. I felt proud that they were able to see me sing. Congratulations Jared!

Christmas and Holiday Wishes I wish all members of the school community a very merry Christmas and a very relaxing and revitalising vacation period. I greatly look forward to seeing community members on the first day of school which is Wednesday 1 February for Grades 1—6 and Thursday 2 February for Preps and hearing about some of the holiday adventures.
