This is the story of a group of friends who over the course of eight months, went from

strangers to ‘sisters.’

At the end of the summer, before arriving, they discovered their room assignments and who they would

live with for the first year of this new chapter in their lives. Needless to say, it was a big moment for the

nervous incoming freshmen.

On move-in day, saying goodbye to their parents was extremely emotional. This was the first time they would be completely independent. Hugging

their parents goodbye was an experience that was full of both excitement and sadness.

To meet the person you will be sharing a dorm room with for the first time on move-in day was scary. The girls didn’t know eachother, and yet they

would be living in the same room, starting that night.

The first night away, sleeping in a new bed, in a new room, with a stranger pretty much, was a weird experience for the girls.

They had to begin showering in their flip flops, and walk down the hallway in their towel,

all experiences which were extremely foreign to them.

Getting used to living away at college was hard. Never before had the girls been away from their parents for this long, and with so much freedom. Over the year, they became very independent. Thankfully however, the

friendships they made with their fellow floormates made the transition easier.

Eager to meet their neighbors, they started to get to know each other by visiting each other’s rooms. Whether it be just talking, watching television shows and movies, or just studying together, the girls began to get closer.

7

Soon, the girls began to meet up at the Marketplace for meals after classes and extracurricular activities. The table chatter was

always full of smiles and laughs.

To get off campus every once in awhile, the girls walked into town to Folklore, or Brothers Pizza. On someone’s birthday, they frequently

inhabited TJ Rockwell’s and even went to midnight movie premieres, such as Twilight.

Since the group had varied interests, they all were taking courses fordifferent majors. There were majors in Biology, Communications,

Education, Political Science, and even Psychology. As a result, the girls were involved in a wide variety of campus clubs/organizations. However,

the floor united them.

10

Especially at the beginning and end of semesters, when it seemed all of the Professors chose to dump all of the work on the students, the girls found

the floor to be an easy place to de-stress. With friends all around, their support was clear.

11

Many times the girls had a good time without even leaving the floor. Some nights they would simply just order pizza and listen to music together. In

some instances, these nights ended up being the most fun.

12

Many nights, when they did not have a lot of homework, a movie night would commence. Sometimes they would even being a movie marathon,

of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.

13

Although the idea of no work sounded nice, the girls knew how bittersweet summer would be. Yes, they would be able to travel with their family, and relax on the beach but they would be apart from their Etown

friends, who they were going to miss for four months. They were happy to spend time with their families, but they were sad to seperate.

14

Summer crept up on the friends. While it felt like a month had passed, an entire academic year had passed by in reality. Before coming to

Elizabethtown, the girls heard that their college years would fly by but they never believed the rumors before now. High School years went by so slow, that they swore college would be the same way. Needless to say, they heard

‘I told you so,’ too many times to count as their freshmen year came to a close.

As spring approached, they began to sunbathe together on Brinser field, and sit out in various places on campus in be-

tween classes. After a long winter, the warmth while lying and chatting together in the grass was much needed.

At the beginning of the year, the girls never imagined that they would miss their friends this much on breaks. Not until winter break did the girls real-ize how hard summer would be. If they missed eachother while apart for a

month, what would they do for four months?

17

Moving out of their first college dorm room was a weird experience. A place that became their home for almost an entire year, would suddenly be someone else’s home next year. It was strange to part with a room where

they made so many memories.

18

As the year comes to a close, the girls began reminiscing on their good year. Considering all of their experiences and friendships they have made,

they were appreciative. Starting college was a new chapter in their lives, and they felt their first year was a year to remember.

Saying goodbye to eachother was very sad. As they prepared to move back home, and to their old life, they promised to keep in touch. They

knew they would keep in touch whether online or on Facebook, but it was strange to think you would not be seeing eachother every day.
