Graviti Zone Rugs win admirers with novel designsContemporary design newcomer Graviti Zone Rugs is fast establishing itself as a serious player. Set up last year by designer Mónica Ibáñez, its Puddle rug (top, far right) was a contender for the 2009 Best of Year awards run by Interior Design magazine in New York. The hand-tufted rug, designed by Marivi Varde, was inspired by raindrops falling on an autumn afternoon.

All Graviti Zone rugs are hand-tufted and can be made to clients’ specifications. Mónica says she wants people to feel their rug is a member of the family, a warm, comforting friend that will brighten their interior and cheer them up when they’re down in the dumps. The first collection also features Africana (right) and Grass (bottom far right).

A touch of the Orient in Tresserra’s new collection

Jaime Tresserra’s latest pieces show Oriental influences, with straight lines and hidden compartments. The very elegant Ni Hao console (below left), made from walnut with leather-topped boxes and stainless steel fittings, has a tray with compartments for keys and loose change. The Camisero (left) is another fine piece, made from light or dark walnut with stainless steel fittings. Velden (below), a table in walnut or sycamore wood with metal fittings in stainless steel and central top in transparent/sandblasted glass.

Jaime Hayón attracks crowds to Trafalgar SquareA game of chess with Jaime Hayón could only be a surreal experience. And so it was for crowds that turned up to see his chess board in Trafalgar Square – piéce de resistance of the London Design Festival. Huge ceramic chess pieces on wheels, each hand-painted in Hayon’s signature surrealistic style, could be played either in person or online.

Young talents9 designers to watch

Let’s hear it for these people. The cream of Spain’s design talent.

TOMáS ALONSO Tomás Alonso, of the design collective OKAY Studio, has worked on projects for ICA, V&A Museum and Whitechapel Gallery. His goal is to create pieces that appear simple and natural but are slightly quirky too, like the award-winning No 7 Nube chair (below) made from steam bent wood and the super slender LED Mr Light series (right).

Tomás Alonso: www.tomas-alonso.com [email protected]éCTOR SERRANO

Héctor Serrano puts a new spin on everyday objects, making them more enjoyable to use. Waterdrop (below) is a spectacular experience capturing the beauty of water presented at 100% Design London. “Do not lose”(above left) makes sure keys are there when you need them. Héctor’s vibrant monster and animal tattoos (top of page) were designed for UK gift company Worldwide to entertain children; and his Superpatata light (above right) can be used as a lamp but also as a pillow, antistress device, an object to warm your bed.

CLAUDIO RIPOL Claudio Ripol’s designs are characterized by a simplicity that goes beyond modern production. A senior designer at the Christoph Behling research and design agency also works with Yeonju Yang on their own projects, like the winning free-standing clothes hanger (below left) that when placed against the wall won’t fall over. Bright colors give energy to pieces like their spiral clock (above) and metal outdoor furniture (below right). Claudio’s martini glass (right) won’t let in an olive slip around the glass when you’re sipping your drink. Claudio believes that people want products that express the designer’s personality.

Claudio Ripol: [email protected]

ROGER ARqUER Roger Arquer’s work includes the Birdland (above left), a collection of conceptual birdhouses. He designed a goldfish bowl (left) and a humane mouse trap (above) made from a soy sauce bottle. His Dramprom condensation lampshade (top right) uses water. But don’t worry, sparks won’t fly.

Roger Arquer: [email protected]

JORDI CANUDAS Jordi Canudas of the OKAY Studio is inspired by action. His Less Lamp for Matalarte (right, bottom) has a ceramic shade that has to be broken with a hammer before light comes in; and his Raincatcher (left), a container that hangs outside, is connected to the drainage system and it expands when it rains. La Estirada (right, top), is a floor to ceiling light and Wallfa (above) is a two sided piece of furniture that is both wall and sofa.

Jordi Canudas: [email protected]

MIqUEL MORA Miquel Mora is one of the blue-sky-out-of-the-box thinker. His prototype paper alarm clock has to be scrunched up to turn if off (see Miquel in bed demonstrating how it works). It was created with digital paper, where the electronics are on the surface of an object, not inside.

Miquel Mora: [email protected]

óSCAR DIAZ Óscar Diaz’s work includes RGB Vases, three different colored vases, that when light passes through them create a Veuve Clicquot yellow color.

CRISTIAN ZUZUNAGA Cristian Zuzunaga works with printed textiles. His acid-bright abstract pixillated chack designs lend themselves equally well to fashion accessories and furniture. Moroso, Ligne Roset and Cristian Delcourt are sofas and armchairs upholstered in Zunzunaga fabrics. His scarf (above right) was created for the Tate Gallery.

Cristian Zunzunaga: [email protected]

VERóNICA MARTíNEZ Verónica Martínez launched the Mare outdoor furniture (above) collection at last year’s Valencia Furniture Fair. She balances functionality and aesthetics to create products like the swing seat (left) that people enjoy using.
