Well, some people DO read the bulletin after all! I got about six more offers to pay for the framed Marian pictures than I needed. One who was too late for a canvas asked what else there was—I told her the three chairs cost $1,700. She offered to donate the entire amount. Even more exciting, a Boy Scout wants to do the suggested gazebo/garden project. He will be able to start his Eagle project in January 2018. Thank you once again for the many examples of gen-erosity and support for the parish. Do keep up the good work of regular collections, monthly yellow-hat collection and the pledge payments. Thanks again! The car raffle is here! Currently we are selling the tickets for $25 each, 5 for $100 only in the Main Office. Soon the K of C will coordinate with all min-istries to help sell. You must show valid driver’s li-cense to prove you are 18 years old to buy the ticket. Winner gets the car OR $10,000. The winner will be drawn at the annual Simbang Gabi dinner. Congratu-lations to Vern Gross who won the Cabo San Luca trip and $500! That ticket was drawn on August 15th dur-ing the lovely reception for our 30th anniversary as a parish. Our annual parish picnic is coming up soon—October 7th. This relaxing family event is held at George Lane Park, Ave. L-8 and 55th Street. I strong-ly encourage you to take the time to gather at about noon and to stay until about 4:00. The parish provides hot dogs and hamburgers, cooked by the Knights, and beverages. The rest is pot-luck. Please bring a serv-ing dish/platter of your favorite picnic foods, salads or desserts to share with others. This fun family event offers us an opportunity to celebrate our being chil-dren of the one Father and to get to know one another a bit better. A bounce house, piñatas, face painting and other fun things will be available for the children. Just to let you know, I have a 2:00 PM wed-ding the day of the picnic. I will be there at the begin-ning of the picnic and might be able to come back af-ter the wedding. Was it Shakespeare? “Heavy the head that wears the crown.” Some have asked why the crucifix on the altar in Our Lady’s Chapel faces the priest. The custom of having an altar crucifix facing the priest is ancient and is beginning to make a come-back. The Mass is both a sacred meal and a sacrifice. At it, the “once for all” death of Christ is “re-presented,” made present again, in a bloodless way. We proclaim the death and resur-rection of Christ until he comes again. The visual of the crucified Lord helps to focus the priest. You have the large crucifix on the back wall for your devotion and edification. Be sure to pick up a magnet with parish phone numbers, Mass times and other pertinent information from the tables by the exits. It is a handy reminder.

DID YOU KNOW?

Warn tweens and teens about selfie risks! Teens and tweens typically like to push boundaries and test their limits, but the new trend of taking dan-gerous selfies has led to several tragedies. There are far too many people who think that taking a picture while driving, or standing out on a ledge, is more important than their own safety, and that getting “likes” on a photo makes the risks worth it. Talk to your kids about safety, smart choices, and being aware of their environment and surroundings, even when they’re using their smartphones. For a copy of the VIRTUS© online article “Selfies are More Dan-gerous than You Think,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227
