Richard Rheins Senior Rabbi

Todah Rabah Chazzan Bryanand Melyssa Zive!

Five years ago, we brought Bryan Zive into our congregation and he soon became a dear friend and beloved teacher who has inspired, guided and nudged our music program to even greater levels. When he came to us, Bryan was a talented song leader. Over the years we have witnessed his transformation into a beloved Chazzan, a full member of our clergy. His enormous drive, coupled with his extraordinary passion and love for Judaism and the Jewish people, prompted him to continue to study and develop. All we had to do is to give him enough room and the opportunity to grow. Doing so, we are justifiably proud in knowing that we have had a hand in being a part of his blossoming into a fabulous Jewish leader. We can also take some credit in encouraging him to meet and be absolutely dazzled by the spectacularly talented, smart and beautiful Melyssa Mayer, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has been a tremendous asset in our Preschool and Religious School, helping children who need sensitive guidance. They married two years ago and we were all thrilled for them and continue to kvell as we have watched their love and joy grow!

It is an understatement to say that Chazzan Bryan Zive has profoundly influenced every aspect of our music program. He created the Teen Music Group (TMG) in which some 30 teenagers wow us with their musical talent and energy. He lifted the Junior Choir to new heights and has directly inspired almost every member to aspire to become a TMGer. Together with Linda Leonard, our remarkably wonderful Choir Director, he has transformed the Adult Choir so that it is bigger, better and has a more prominent role in our High Holy Day and Festival services than ever before. He has encouraged young song leaders to take up their guitars and become music leaders. He has tutored scores of B’nei Mitzvah students and enabled them to impress their families—and themselves!

As Chazzan Zive has helped us grow, he too has grown in love of Jewish text and wisdom. He longs to explore in depth the genius of our Jewish ancestors. He longs to become familiar and comfortable with the complexities and profundities of Rabbinic literature. He longs to fulfill his childhood dream—to become a Rabbi. How can we be other than proud? Yes, we will be sad to see Bryan leave us as he enters Rabbinical school but our sadness is limited to our loss and is tempered by our overflowing joy

for him and Melyssa. We have nurtured them and they have nurtured us. They have helped us achieve our outstanding musical programmatic aspirations and now we have helped them as they venture forth in fulfillment of their dreams and aspirations.

We will all have an opportunity to say a formal farewell to Bryan and Melyssa at a special Erev Shabbat service on Friday, June 20 (6pm) followed by a congregational dinner. I hope that you will be able to join us as we give them a very well deserved tribute.

Let me conclude by offering Bryan my own version of a blessing offered at the Reform movement’s seminary, Hebrew Union College (HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati.

May you live to see your hopes and dreams fulfilled.May your destiny bless generations to come.May you learn from generations past and inspire those yet to be.May your eyes shine with the light of holy wordsAnd your face reflect an exuberant joy of life.May your lips ever speak wisdomAnd your hands help in building justice. As you yearn to listen to the words of the Holy OneMay your love for your people temper zeal.May your heart be filled with intuitionAnd your words be filled with insight.May you be ever open to new friendsAnd may you always know that we will cherish our time together.

B’ahavah u-v’shalom, With love and peace,

Rabbi Rick Rheins

B’rukhah Haba’ah to Cantor Sheila Nesis

Temple Sinai is delighted to welcome Cantor Sheila Nesis to Temple Sinai as the gifted successor to our beloved Chazzan Zive. Those of you who met Cantor Nesis during her visit know that she is a supremely talented Jewish professional who brings considerable experience, charm, energy, and spirit to bless our community. She and her husband Alex Abreu will be moving to Denver in June and Cantor Nesis will be on the Temple Sinai bimah for her first Erev Shabbat service on Friday, June 27 at 6:00pm.

We look forward to welcoming her to our Temple Sinai family! B’rukhah Haba’ah Cantor Nesis, blessed are you who join us!

Hebrew Words of the Month: Lehitraot and Barukh Haba

There is an old joke that gentiles leave without saying goodbye and Jews say goodbye but never leave. Indeed, saying goodbye is bitter-sweet. So it is natural that the Hebrew word for goodbye, lehitraot, isn’t a true goodbye at all. Rather, it says, “Until we see each other later.” May it be that all our goodbyes are only short interludes before joyous reunions!

Saying “hello” is also an occasion for calling attention to the blessing of welcoming new and old friends. When welcoming a male we say barukh haba, “Blessed are you who have come.” When welcoming a female we say barukhah haba’ah. When welcoming a mixed group we say, brukhim habaim, “Blessed are all of you who have come.” Let us always recognize the blessings of those who enter our homes and our lives.

The Festival of SHAVUOT• Erev Shavuot is on Tuesday evening, June 3A Tikkun Leil study program and Festival service begins at 7:00 p.m. and will feature a musical program that salutes Chazzan, Bryan Zive• Morning of Shavuot is on Wednesday,

Chazzan Bryan Zive

What a journey it has been. Six years ago, I was honored to speak with Rabbi Rheins, then-Executive Director Ruth Cohen, Past President Patti Schwartzberg and Search Committee Chair Matt Gordon about the incredible opportunity to create a vibrant music program from scratch at a wonderful, warm congregation in Denver. After only a few conversations and a trip to the Mile High City, I knew that it was besheret, a match made in heaven.

In my five years of service to Temple Sinai’s congregants and the Denver Jewish community, I feel an overwhelming sense of satisfaction in the progress we have made together. We developed our Youth Choir to 25 members strong; created and sustained a Teen Music Group of 30 strong; and enhanced the sound, repertoire and numbers of our Adult Choir, all while making music an educational and spiritual staple in our community. We have showed off our congregational talent in our three Shireinu performances. I am proud of what we have accomplished and I hope you are too.

It is time for me to move on to my ultimate academic, spiritual and professional goals in the Rabbinate. You all have shaped me into the leader that I am, and for that, I will always be grateful. I am so excited to see what comes in the future, not only for us, but for you as well. I have the utmost confidence that Cantor Sheila Nesis will continue what we began five years ago and will enhance and develop our music program to even new heights. Most importantly, she’ll be a wonderful clergy partner with our Rabbis and will be there for YOU. That was always my top priority.

I sincerely hope that you will all be in touch and continue the strong relationships and friendships we have created. We will have a blog that I invite you to follow. The address will be posted below.

Melyssa and I wish you nothing but the best in your spiritual journeys and lives. We thank you for the honor and privilege of being a part of your community and for helping to make Temple Sinai our home for the past five years.

L’hitraot (until we meet again),

TEMPLE SINAI TOUR TO EASTERN EUROPE!

BERLIN, PRAGUE, WARSAW & KRAKOW

July 6 - July 19, 2015So many Temple Sinai members have been

asking about a tour of Eastern Europe. To make sure that the experience would meet our expectations, Rabbi Susan Rheins personally went on an extensive tour of Eastern Europe’s most compelling Jewish sites. Now, after consulting with experts, she and Rabbi Rick Rheins have developed what they believe will be an extraordinary experience. The itinerary will include tours of Berlin, Prague, Warsaw, and Krakow. In addition to visiting both the infamous Sachsenhausen and Auschwitz, we will also be able to witness the inspiring rebirth of the Jewish communities in areas once devastated by the Nazis.

• Engage with the Progressive Communities in Central & Eastern Europe.• Enrich your knowledge of European Jewish History.• Immerse in European Culture: Art, Food & Wine.• As a traveling community with other Temple Sinai members, experience all that Central & Eastern Europe have to offer.• Confront the horrors of the past and celebrate the re-birth of the liberal Jewish communities in Berlin, Prague, Warsaw and Krakow.

To register for the tour, visit: http://www.ayelet.com/RheinsCEJuly2015.aspxQuestions? Contact Rabbis Rick & Susan Rheins: [email protected].

Sign up fliers for both this and the Israel tour are available in the Temple Sinai lobby and office and on the website. You can also contact Ayelet Tours directly at (800) 237-1517.

From The President

Susan EpsteinPresident

Whoever said that shul business is boring was never President of Temple Sinai.

The past eleven months have flown by as the staff and Board of Trustees met its challenges and successes.

The generosity and commitment of our members resulted in meeting the 1.5 million dollar match grant from an extraordinary anonymous donor. Our talented and experienced Building Committee worked diligently to assure a June ground-breaking for our new school. Our Treasurer and Finance Committee made sure our books were in order so that we received a clean audit report from outside auditors. Our Annual Dinner Event honoring Rabbis Rick and Susan Rheins was a smashing success and a delightful evening for attendees. Religious School and Preschool taught our children well, all while instilling the love of Judaism.

Sadly, this month we will say goodbye to Dr. Steve Glickman, who has brought our Religious School to greater heights and strived to give our children a love of Jewish learning. Chazzan Bryan Zive, who brought beautiful music into our lives, will begin his course of study to become a Rabbi in July. We wish you both a successful future.

But, new faces in new places will brighten the lives of our children, congregants and staff. Shannon Morgione, the new Director of our Preschool, comes to us with many years of experience. She is a whirlwind of activity and, in two short months, has introduced many new ideas. Newly appointed Principal of our Religious School, Michelle Schwartz, who recently received a Master’s degree in Jewish Education, has great plans for next year’s Religious School classes. Lastly, Cantor Sheila Nesis, who enchanted our congregation during her visit with us in May, will bring her beautiful voice to our congregation in late June.

It has been a wonderful year and a peek into next year looks even brighter. None of this would be possible without our hardworking, dedicated staff and clergy, committed Board of Trustees and our loyal congregants. I thank you all for making Temple Sinai such a successful community, filled with promise, warmth and caring and not the least bit boring.

Sign Up to Join our Next Adult B’nei Mitzvah Class

Almost every year, a group of Temple Sinai adult members leads a Shabbat service as B’nei Mitzvah. Without fail, each experiences a profound sense of joy and pride. Likewise, all who attend these services are deeply moved and inspired. Some even step forward and inquire about the next opportunity! We would love to have another wonderful group of Temple Sinai adults for a B’nei Mitzvah class. Those who never had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah service and those who would like to relive the thrill are invited to sign up.

If you are interested in participating in this class, contact our Program Director, Lisa Thorner (303-759-1827).

Our clergy work personally with each student and his/her family to help create a memorable celebration that will bring a lifetime of blessings.

For your patience …and caring…

and hard work…and sharing…

WE SAY THANK YOU!

Dr. Steve Glickman came to Temple Sinai in 2006. He had been the Principal of the Denver Hebrew High at the Colorado Agency for Jewish Education, he had taught English and literature classes at the University of Colorado and Colorado Free University. His experience, both in the education field and the Jewish community, spoke for themselves, but his commitment and passion for both was inspiring.

These past eight years, Dr. Glickman has made a tremendous impact on our community; a lasting impact that will carry Temple Sinai into the future. His continuous commitment to the staff he has worked with is admirable. He has always looked for the best opportunities to support their work, challenge them to develop and appreciated their service. His love and dedication to working with children is remarkable. He always put the needs of the students first. He could find multiple answers to solve any problem. He has always been committed to aiding those who sought support and always paid attention to the individual, not

just the group. He shared his creativity, assisted those who required an extra push and always found new ways to entice and challenge our kids to be better Jewish learners.

Dr. Glick is a teacher, a leader, a writer, a father, a husband, a friend and a humorist. He has enriched the lives of those of us who had the opportunity to work with him. He has written very thoughtful and inspirational Torah interpretations and commentary on Jewish life and education. He has taught many of us how to be better Jewish parent educators and role models for our children. He has offered his sense of humor just when a smile and a laugh is needed most.

We are grateful to Dr. Glick for his years of service to our children, our school and our Temple. We are proud to share that Dr. Glickman has just accepted a position with the University of Colorado as the Program Director in the Program in Jewish Studies. We look forward to spending many more years together, with him, Laurel and Mayaan as a community. We offer our wishes for much happiness, but mostly we say THANK YOU to him: For what you have set out to do Dr. G… to inspire, teach and love our children and all of us, we will always be grateful!

A Salute to Dr. Glick

We are delighted to report that Michelle Schwartz has graciously accepted the position of Religious School Principal. Michelle has been an extraordinary educator at Temple Sinai for decades. She has worked for many years teaching various grade levels, tutoring our teens to become Bar/Bat Mitzvah, facilitated and led our Rosh Chodesh program for young girls and she developed and directed our very successful Hebrew Mitkadem program. Her work has been remarkable, and we have been so fortunate to be the recipients of Michelle’s skills and leadership.

Recently, Michelle received her Master’s Degree in Jewish Education from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. She has continued to enrich and deepen her Jewish background and educational skills through high-level and intensive programs. We have all benefited greatly and will continue to benefit from Michelle’s talent and passion for Jewish education.

Join us in wishing a Mazel Tov to Michelle for completing this prestigious program, and a thank you for sharing her skills and expertise as she begins this new role in our congregation.

Temple Sinai Spirituality Retreat -- A Great Success

On May 3, thirty-five Temple members attended the second annual spirituality retreat organized by the Lay-Led Spirituality Committee. People came on their own, with spouses, with kids and even with the whole family. Some had attended last year, some for the first time, some were new members, and some long-term members. All came for a taste of “spirituality.” The day’s spirituality theme focused on healing, while the activities included a guided meditation, a community-creating Middot (Jewish values) discussion, uplifting Jewish chanting and a spiritual/healing/candle-lighting ceremony. When asked about the day, one participant said the best part was that “everyone seemed so warm and kind and thoughtful,” and the worst part was that “the day was over too soon.” Others said the day was special, meaningful, wonderful and, perhaps most important, that it built connections. The day was planned and presented by a wonderful team of Temple members. For more information, or to join the committee that is planning next year’s retreat and other events, contact Susan Bernhardt at [email protected] or 303.523.5289.

Dr. Glick Says:Thank you Temple Sinai! Over the past

several weeks, I have received a tremendous amount of support regarding my tenure as the Education Director. One of the things that makes this outpouring so remarkable is that it is not all that remarkable for this community to share positive feedback. I know from my

own 15 years of working in supplementary Jewish education, as well as the experiences of my colleagues, that parents are not shy about sharing constructive criticism, but are often not nearly as expressive about positive experiences. In fact, for many years, I took silence as a professional compliment.

In my time at the helm of Temple Sinai Religious School, however, I have found that our families are even more vocal about sharing praise than critique. Our families are certainly invested in their children’s Jewish education and are therefore eager to note and correct areas of improvement. Our families also understand the value of acknowledging the hard work and success of the school. I have always heard more compliments about our teachers, administration and program than complaints. This speaks volumes about the character of our congregation.

I want to thank the entire community for the many years of professional and personal support Temple Sinai has shown me and my family. It has been quite a ride and I look forward to participating as a parent and congregant in the school’s and congregation’s continued journey into greater excellence.

Our Youth

This time of year is bittersweet for many of us. Just like the caterpillars we’ve watched grow, build a chrysalis and emerge as beautiful butterflies, so too have our pre-kindergarten children. And now, just like our butterflies, it’s time for us to release them so they may take flight and graduate, as they move on to the next step of their educational journey…kindergarten! We will miss each and every one of their bright smiling faces, funny personalities and their gifts of unconditional love and acceptance for all. Congratulations!

We still have some room in our Summer Adventure Camp. So if your children, grandchildren or children of friends and neighbors are looking for some summer fun, please get in touch with us, as we have exciting things in store!

Fall Preschool registration is underway and we have wonderful and engaging programs for children of all ages. Our Parent-Tot classes are the perfect introduction to early childhood education and a great way to meet other parents whose children are of similar age. Our other programs for two’s, three’s and four’s are geared toward helping children master skills that will promote learning at each developmental stage. In the afternoon, we have a cultural arts program where children can explore dance, music, art and more.

We have programs to fit all schedules. Therefore, if your scheduling needs are such that you need wrap-around care (7:30 – 9:00 a.m. and/or 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.) we have that covered too! Call today to learn more or to set a time to tour our school and meet the teachers. We look forward to meeting you!
