There’s lots going on during the Open Day, so hereare our recommendations to help you make the mostof your visit:

n bring a copy of your ticket (either printed or onyour smartphone) and keep it to hand – you needit to access some presentations and Colleges

n look at the programme of activities in advance orearly in the day and make a plan – you might findit helpful to mark which sessions you want to go to,or create your own itinerary on p11 or on ourmobile site (see right)

n arrive in good time for the start of sessions – to prevent disruption, latecomers may not beadmitted

RefreshmentsRefreshments can be purchased on some Universitysites.

You can also find plenty of food stalls, sandwich andcoffee shops, restaurants, and pubs/bars servingfood throughout the city. Trinity Street/King’sParade and the streets around the Market Square(Market Hill) as well as the market itself are goodplaces to start. Please note that the University ofCambridge accepts no liability for theproducts/services provided by these companies.

Prayer roomThe prayer room is on the Sidgwick Site (locatedbehind the Lecture Block, map location ) andis available 10.00am – 4.00pm.

There are some dedicated sessions forparents/supporters (see opposite). We stronglyrecommend that parents/supporters attendthese sessions rather than the student focused‘Applying to Cambridge’ talks. What’s a College?Cambridge is a collegiate university, which means itcomprises University faculties and departments indifferent academic subjects, and a number ofColleges.

Your College is your base for the time you’re atCambridge. It’s where you live, eat, do a lot ofsocialising, receive academic and pastoral support,and where you often (though not always) have yoursupervisions. Regardless of their College, studentson the same course are taught together by theacademic faculties/departments, attending thesame lectures, seminars and practicals.

Advice on how (and how not) to choose a College,along with an explanation of the key functions that

the University (through the faculties/departments)and Colleges are responsible for, can be found inthe Undergraduate Prospectus and on our website(www.cam.ac.uk/choosingacollege).

Visiting CollegesThe Colleges are open for visitors to drop in from9.30am – 4.30pm, unless otherwise stated (pleasecheck the opening times carefully as access isn’tpossible at any other time). See p14-5 for Collegelocations.

Some Colleges have their own events taking place during 5 and 6 July that require separatebooking (see individual College websites for details and booking).

Cambridge is small and busy – the roads inand around the city often get congestedand parking is very limited, so it’s best totravel into the city by public transport (seealso the back cover).

The Open Day information point, most courseinformation stands and many of the morning talksare at the Sidgwick Site (map location ) –where much of the following guidance directs you to – though there are sessions at venues across the city. Check the timetable (p3-10) andlocation(s) of the first sessions you wish to attendbefore planning your journey into the city.

By carWe recommend visitors arriving by car use the Parkand Ride services (see the map, right). It’s anticipatedthat the P&R sites will be busy on 5 and 6 July(particularly Madingley Road and Trumpington) –please allow plenty of time to travel in case yourintended P&R site is full and you have to continue to an alternative P&R site.

Catch a Universal bus (towardsMadingley Road) from stop 8. Alight on West Roadfor the Sidgwick Site (map location ), or JJThomson Avenue for the West Cambridge Site (maplocation ). For city centre venues and Colleges,take the Universal bus to Trumpington Street or takeone of the Citi services (1, 3 or 7) to St Andrew’s Street.

Alternatively, our city centre venues – Silver Street/MillLane Site (map location ), the New Museums Site(map location ) and the Downing Site (maplocation ) – are c.20-25 minutes’ walk from thecentral station (CBG). Please go via Station Road – Hills Road – Regent Street – Downing Street for NewMuseums and Downing Sites, and Station Road – Hills Road – Lensfield Road – Trumpington Street forSilver Street/Mill Lane Site.

To return to the central train station (CBG), catch aUniversal bus (towards Addenbrooke’s Hospital/theBiomedical Campus) from JJ Thomson Avenue (maplocation ), West Road (map location ), or SilverStreet or Trumpington Street (city centre venues andColleges). Cambridge North train station (CMB) is located onthe northern edge of the city. For city centre venues,take the Stagecoach Citi 2 and alight at EmmanuelStreet. Return buses can be taken from St Andrew’sStreet.

Cambridge isn’t a large city and is easy to get around – our students usually walk or cycleeverywhere – and most Open Day venues are within walking distance of the city centre (see themap on p14-5).

Wherever practical and possible, we recommend walking between venues (routes suggested below). This isoften quicker than getting a bus, and is also the best way to get a sense of the city.
