Now that I’ve caught up, I’ll be working on some new programs at PJC. Feel free to mention your interests to me and I’ll keep that in mind. We’ve started Israeli dancing on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month and Lynn Berman has been a wonderful dance instructor. Even though it might seem it was long ago for you, I’m only now getting over the whirlwind of preparation and services we call the ‘high holidays’ and Sukkot. on November 24th. We’ll be singing lots of Chanukah songs that evening as we eat latkes, shop and schmooze. We also plan another holiday get-together the following week. At 6:30 PM on December 3rd, we will gather for suf gonyot (jelly donuts) and a community candle lighting. By all means, BYOM, 'bring your own menorah' and light with us. We will have some singing afterwards followed, of course, by Israeli dance at 7PM. I’ve been slowly learning the melodies of PJC. In between, mostly on Friday nights, I’ve been adding some others. Those are traditional melodies, some new tunes, an original here or there, and even the occasional pop tune if it works with the parsha or holiday. It’s a bit of an experimental lab for me and I have to say, everyone has been a willing and enthusiastic participant. If you haven’t been to Friday nights in a while, come and check it out. The first Shabbat in December we will celebrate as Molly Goss becomes a Bat Mitzvah. She has been working very hard and sounds beautiful. Molly, her family, and I hope to see everyone there. L’hitraot, Cantor Henry Shapiro

• • Labor Day is Monday, September 2nd. • Rosh Hashanah begins the evening of September 4th, with morning services the next two days. See

the High Holy Day schedule for times and dates of all the Holy Days and Festivals in Tishrei. You can find this elsewhere in the Scribe.

• Friday night services continue being held at 6:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm. This change has been well

I would like to THANK all the families who contributed food to the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry during the High Holy Days. Ron and I brought the bags to the food pantry after Yom Kippur. The amount of goods contributed was significant and I was truly overwhelmed by the positive response of PJC MEMBERS. You don't realize that a box of cereal you contributed might be dinner for a family, so no item is insignificant. Just this one branch of The Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank provides food for over 550 families each month. Thank You, Betty Ann.

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin How about this new technology; reading The Scribe on-line or as an email? We save a lot of money and what’s best….we (actually, Gail Levine) don’t have to deal with our beloved US Postal Service. Each month they changed their regulations for how our newsletter had to be prepared and ready for distribution. Now with a few key strokes pushed, it’s on its way to our members. Of course we still mail out some copies of The Scribe to those who don’t have email capability and there will always be “hard copy” editions available at PJC. I used to wonder where you were sitting as you read my column, now I know you’re sitting at the computer. Remember: You can always read The Scribe on our new website: parkwayjewishcenter.org And perhaps you could do us a big favor; check with any friends and family who are members of Parkway; make sure they are on our email list and receive email messages from me. Unfortunately, we send them out but never know if they are being received. Thanks… For years we’ve had what we’ve called Friday Night Fusions; a perfect mix of prayer, chanting and davening done to musical accompaniment. It had been a very popular change of pace for Friday evening Shabbat Services. We held them several times per year Now, Cantor Henry Shapiro strums his guitar each week to the delight of those attending the popular 6 o’clock service. Since the beginning of 2013; when we moved the start time of the service, attendance has never wavered. I want to thank our members who make the pilgrimage to PJC each week for their steadfast attendance and support. If you haven’t experienced Friday evening Shabbat, please make a point of attending soon. We have a lively Shabbat Service each Saturday morning at 9:30. We’re hoping to see you at that service too. There’s Israeli “Dancing and Prancing” on the first and third Tuesday evenings of the month at PJC. We meet up at 7pm for a lively hour lead by instructor Lynn Berman. On the first Tuesday night we dance to recorded music and on the third Tuesday of each month we have a “live” Klezmer Band. Don’t wish to dance? Come and listen to the band. Everyone’s welcome. Bring a friend. Don’t miss the PJC Sisterhood Pre-Chanukah Dinner set for November 24th. There will be a scrumptious dinner served with the best potato latkes this side of Crown Heights. Check this edition of The Scribe for details. Many thanks to those who contacted me and said how much they enjoyed High Holidays at Parkway this year. When you’re happy…I’m happy too. See you on the 24th for the Latkes; please pass the applesauce and then we’ll talk again…

LIBRARY NEWS “My pen is my harp and my lyre; my library is my garden and my orchard.” by Judah Halevi. This is the quote for National Jewish Book Month which is observed this year October 26 to November 26. A brief history of this event: In 1925, Fanny Goldstein, a librarian at the West End Branch of the Boston Public library put on displayed a group of Jewish books and called it Jewish Book Week. By 1928 communities around the country had established Jewish Book Week and after 1940 this was extended to Jewish Book Month. It was decided that National Jewish Book month would be pre-Hanukkah as to promote Jewish content books as Hanukkah gifts. If you would like details on how this event is celebrated by the National Jewish Book Council visit their website at www.jewishbookcouncil.org This site also features such areas as: 1) JBC Blog! The Prosen People 2) Twitter Book Club 3) Jewish Book World Magazine 4) Book Reviews and many other categories Of course, the best place to discover Jewish books is your very own PJC library! Visit us soon-- you can access the library each morning when Gail Levine is in the office-- 9:00 am to 1:00 pm or when attending services Friday evening or Saturday morning. Check us out!! May you be strengthened by tradition, warmed by Hanukkah lights and may your life be touched with miracles. See you in the library, Betty Ann

Bat Mitzvah of Molly Goss

Molly attends Propel Charter School in Braddock Hills. She has been a synchronized swimmer for the past 7 years and has been a part of the

Forest Hills swim team for the last 6 years. Molly is also on an art scholarship at the Carnegie Mellon School of Art, where she attends

class every Saturday.

Molly's parents and family are very proud of all of her hard work and dedication!

An important message from the PJC Sisterhood: We encourage and appreciate sponsors for Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Please try to give us two weeks notice whenever possible so that we may properly prepare for your Kiddush or oneg.
