Be Aware And Be Prepared

“HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS” Once again it is Hurricane Season. The month of June for the residents of Kings Pointe is our time to prepare for the uncertainty of possible heavy rains and high winds, even perhaps a hurricane. On June 9th, there will be a “Hurricane Prep” meeting for all residents. Mark your calendars for this important meeting. Residents are asked to meet Monday evening, June 9th at 6:30 p.m. During this time, we will share plans for our Awareness Preparation. In addition, we will ask for volunteers to assist in the inspection of vacant homes to ensure they are hurricane ready and are free of items that could become projectiles in the case of a hurricane or tropical storm.

From Our Point of View: According to the calendar, there are still a lot of activities to take advantage of this summer…Water aerobics to Coffee and Donuts, Special Clubs… to Dining Out. If you participate, there is a great possibility you may receive something extra special!

Noodles Under Control As you probably know, there are foam noodles at the pool area for folks to use when they use the pool. They are stored in the receptacle that is located in the northeast corner of the pool deck. When you use a noodle or the balls, etc., please put them back in “their home” when you are through using them.

Noodles May Be Under Control, But Dogs in the Park AREN’T. Recently, there was a dog loose in the park that almost got run over because it ran out into the road. Please keep your dogs on leashes at all times when outside of your home. A couple of years ago or so, a dog did get run over. Do we want another tragedy?

Planned Asphalt Beach Party for Next March It has come to my attention that there have been concerns about the Asphalt Beach Party with the Caribbean Chillers. Originally I was going to just put an article in the newsletter but have since decided that it is better to explain in person. In order to address this, I have scheduled a meeting at the clubhouse in the Ballroom on June 2, 1130 a.m. for all interested parties to attend. This will be a good time for anyone to come and ask any questions you might have pertaining to this event.

VENDORS Kings Pointe has many vendors with their own specialties coming into the park. I am keeping track of all the vendors that do a great job and also those that have been taking advantage of our residents. So residents need to continue to return completely filled out Vendor forms with i.e., vendor phone number, e-mails, and your rating of them along with any notes you want to add so that I can run a file system and keep it current. Any outside vendors that you have used in the past that are not advertising with us already, fill out a form. Vendor forms should be returned to the Activities Bulletin Board where there is a mail box for the forms. SAD NEWS

Ted Kuzniar, one of our active snowbird Activities volunteers, passed away on April 29th at his Canadian residence. He died very unexpectedly from a massive heart attack. He would have turned 60 years old on June 9th. Our sincerest condolences go out to Janice, his parents, and the rest of the Kuzniar family.


LADIES LUNCHEON

As mentioned in the last edition, Sue Seymour is ‘retiring’ from being responsible for the Ladies Luncheon. As of this writing, no one has come forward to step into Sue’s shoes so there is no Ladies Luncheon scheduled for June and none can be scheduled until someone steps up. It’s not really so much work: choosing a restaurant; putting up a sign-up sheet; passing the info to Barb for the newsletter; and making the reservation. If you are someone who usually goes to the Luncheon, please consider volunteering your time for this effort so we do not lose the Ladies Luncheon entirely.

Our April gathering was a dining out event to Harborside Restaurant on the shore of Lake Shipp. As usual, we all enjoyed ourselves and the food was great. May's gathering will be a pool party on Wednesday, May 28th pool side at 5:30. Should we have a storm like last year's event, we will move the dinner inside. June's Mateless Wonders gathering will be held at Elmo and Linda's Magical Dining restaurant in town Winter Haven on FRIDAY, June 27th, 2014. Meet at the clubhouse at 4:30 to car pool to the restaurant for a 5:00 dinner. Note the change in the day from Wednesday to Friday. Sign-up sheets will be posted for the respective events in the Clubhouse to sign up if you plan to attend. Contact Pam or Sue with any questions.

GARDEN CLUB Nancy Higgins On Monday, June 9th at 1:00 p.m. the Polk County Extension Service representative will be here to talk about rain barrels. This is a great water conservation method. All Kings Pointe residents are invited to attend. Then the Garden Club will take the summer off and resume meetings in October.

BOOK CLUB Yvonne Fitts The Book Club has changed days and now will meet on the 1st Wednesday of the month. The book we will be reading for June is LONGBOURN by author JO BAKER. We will meet at 11:30 on Wed. June 4th at the clubhouse for discussion then dine at Arabella's in Winter Haven. Please sign up at the clubhouse. We will continue the Book Club during the summer.

HANDICRAFTERS Phyllis Wiepert

Handicrafters will continue meeting during the summer. We have some lovely (handmade by our group) baby sweaters, blanket and bootie sets. For those who are expecting grand or great-grand babies, these will make great gifts. A donation of $20, all of which goes to purchase more yarn, will be appreciated. Let me start off by saying “Sorry Jim” – that’s the Jim who won last year’s Tournament of Champs. Oh, Mullen is his last name. I had previously said Duane was our reigning champ, but was given the wrong info.

We had a turnout of 14 players on May 3rd. Steve Maforth took home 1st place, Ed Phillips got 2nd and we had a tie for 3rd between Bernie Hunt and Lou Schuitema. We are going to try to play the summer months, as long as I can get 14 players. If you sign up and then can’t make the game, please take your name off the list. Thanks again to my dealers for taking the time to deal for us. See you in June.

P.S. Our third place winners aren’t in the picture because neither one of them thought they had enough money to qualify. Good thing they left their bags of chips so we could count them!

The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. 8. These days I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter; I go somewhere to get something,

and then wonder what I’m here after.

CUBAN TREEFROGS

Have you noticed an odd rasping noise at night or have you noticed brown stains on the side of your house? Both of these things are caused by the invasive Cuban Treefrog. Unlike our smaller native tree frogs, Cuban Treefrogs have exceptionally large toe pads and are often creamy white. They like to hide in daylight in tight place like under a folded up umbrella. The University of Florida would like these animals caught and humanely euthanized (see ufl website for directions). “Although they are not nearly as toxic as cane toads (also known as invasive Bufo toads), Cuban Treefrogs have a sticky skin secretion that is extremely irritating to the mucous membranes of people, such as eyes and nose. The secretions cause a burning and itching sensation that can last for more than an hour. This can be especially problematic for people who suffer from asthma or allergies in which case full recovery from the ill effects of the frog skin secretions may take several hours. Therefore, it is always a good idea to wash your hands thoroughly after handling a Cuban tree frog or better yet wearing rubber gloves when handling or attempting to capture a Cuban Treefrog. There do not appear to be any documented deaths or serious injuries of pets from ingesting or attempting to eat a Cuban Treefrog. However, there are reports of salivation and even seizures by pets that have tangled with these noxious frogs, so dogs and cats should be kept away from them.” The information for this article was quoted from University of Florida IFA Extension, The Cuban Treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis ) in Florida.

Are Your Treefrogs Invasive Cuban Treefrogs?

The Cuban Treefrog can be tough to identify. These invasive frogs can be white, gray, green, or brown, and can change colors. Some Cuban Treefrogs have dark streaks or splotches on their backs, while others are nearly solid color with no markings. Cuban Treefrog -- Annoying Pest!

The Cuban Treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis) is native to Cuba, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas. These treefrogs were accidentally brought to Florida in the 1920s, probably as hitchhikers in cargo containers on ships. Cuban Treefrogs are considered invasive in Florida (and other tropical areas) because they are likely to harm our native ecosystems and also cause a lot of problems for humans. Cuban Treefrogs eat at least five different species of native frogs, not to mention the occasional lizard or small snake, and their tadpoles compete with native tadpoles for space and food. Cuban Treefrogs are common in urban areas, where they hang out near lights on the walls of houses and catch insects. They often poop on walls and windows (leaving ugly stains), take over birdhouses, and lay eggs in fish ponds and bird baths. Sometimes Cuban Treefrogs even find their way into homes, hanging out in toilets and clogging sink drains. Cuban treefrogs grow very large, and are known to cause costly power outages by short-circuiting utility switches. Our native treefrogs are all much smaller, and aren't known to cause such utility problems.

What Can You Do?

If you find a Cuban Treefrog at your house, check the Cuban Treefrog range map and report sightings in new areas. Most importantly, you can also help by managing Cuban Treefrogs around your home. Capture Cuban Treefrogs in a plastic bag to avoid contact with the 'slime' secreted by their skin -- it can irritate your nose and eyes, and may trigger attacks in asthma sufferers. After you capture the frog, we recommend that you euthanize them humanely -- in fact, it is illegal (and irresponsible) to re-release them into our ecosystem. The most humane way to euthanize Cuban Treefrogs is by liberally applying benzocaine (20%) to the back or belly of the frog. At your local drugstore, you can find a variety of products containing 20% benzocaine -- first aid or burn sprays and toothache gels or liquids. After you apply the benzocaine, the Cuban Treefrog will quickly become unconscious. Next, seal the plastic bag and put it into the freezer overnight. By the next day, you can be sure that the Cuban Treefrog will not wake up (which would be inhumane), and can dispose of the bag.

At this point, it is important to note that the Cuban Treefrog IS an interesting creature. Amazing adaptations help them avoid drying out or being eaten by predators -- the irritating skin secretions are a great example of this. Unfortunately, human activities have resulted in the accidental introduction of Cuban Treefrogs in Florida and other tropical and subtropical areas. Every day, we receive reports of Cuban Treefrogs found in ornamental plants -- some as far away as Canada! In Florida, the presence of this frog is NOT benign -- they are quite literally eating our native species alive, adding pressure to species that are already greatly affected by habitat loss. It is for these reasons that we advocate humanely euthanizing invasive Cuban Treefrogs -- help give our native wildlife a break!

Cuban Treefrog Research at UF

Dr. Steve Johnson is involved in a variety of research projects focused on increasing our knowledge of invasive Cuban Treefrogs, understanding its impacts on native species, and investigating potential control methods. This research includes testing of a Cuban treefrog deterrent that may help to keep them from using enclosed refuges such as utility boxes.

Who Do You Call? With so many repairmen out there, how do you decide who to call when you need some work done? We want to give you a place to start your search.
