Dear Ms. Bienen,I was researching my grandfather on the internet recently and was pleased to find your work on Homicides in Chicago. I am the grandson of one of the murder victims mentioned in your work. Jeremiah McShea, murdered in May of 1923, was my mother's father. My middle name is Jeremiah.
As you note, the shooter, Garippo, was released from prison when it was determined that he was insane at the time of the shooting, but sane at the time of his release. My mother always said that, according to her mother, the real reason for the shooting was that her father was an early organizer for the stationary engineers union in Chicago and that Garippo, acted on behalf of the mob in an attempt to control the union.
