The GROJEAN Coat of Arms The first is the coat of arms of Franche-Comte. Next is a GROGEAN coat of arms. The similarities suggest this GROGEAN Coat of Arms may be that of our GROGEAN family. Similarities include: the yellow lion with a blue background, open mouth and tongue out, claws showing with one front leg raised, and the tail raised. Yet, there are significant differences that suggest this may not be the Coat of Arms of our GROGEAN family: one lion is standing on its hind legs, and one lion has a crown. Dorans is a French town with a population of 564 residents (in 2012). It is located in the Department of Territoire de Belfort, which is just north of the Department of Doubs, where our VOISARD ancestors were from. It’s elevation rages from 1105 - 1400 feet above sea level. Dorans does not have a church, which explains why most of our GROGEAN ancestors were married in near-by Bermont. “It was in 1427, we can observe the creation of the municipality. Dorans is a flowered village, surrounded by woods, growing grain and livestock are the main resources. The village depended in the eighteenth century the bailiwick of Belfort, with Mazarin and the Prince of Montbeliard was itself property. The layout of the village is very pleasant both in terms of the lighting of the landscape aspect. One can find five fountains, a small chapel a little behind. The school hall which also is a large building with spire and flowered well as most houses Dorans. The festival committee is actively involved in communal activities, there are also some small-scale presence of life. Municipalities Dorans and Bermont have partnered to create a path discovery between the two villages. This footpath figure of eight, along 10.6 km is divided into two loops. The trail of fountains Dorans side, along the 5.8 km and 4.8 km along Bermontour. Divisible at will, depending on the mood or form of each, can explore the rich heritage of both municipalities. Start and plan the footpath at the home of free time Dorans.” http://www.routedescommunes.com/departement-90-commune-1704.html

Many sources were used to gather information on the GROGEAN family. The most helpful were the GeneaNet sites at http://en.geneanet.org/ The most useful GeneaNet sites specifically used were: http://www.geneanet.org/profil/dubs974/Florent-Dubail http://gw1.geneanet.org/fraternite?lang=en&m=N&v=GROSJEAN http://gw3.geneanet.org/pierregray?lang=en&m=N&v=GROSJEAN

Other useful searchable sites were: http://www.lisa90.org/ https://www.familysearch.org/ http://index.rbhayes.org/hayes/index/ http://www.findagrave.com/

More helpful information also came from Marianne Doyle, from Beavercreek, Ohio, who provided extensive information on many families from this part of France and Switzerland.

Cemeteries, obituaries, and US Census records also provded valuable information.

How was this information gathered?

Francois & Jacques are both listed as witnesses in the marriage record of their brother, Jean Pierre GROSJEAN and Agathe DUBAIL. Eash is listed as “frère of l'époux”, (brother of the bridegroom). I have not found any other records concerning either of them.

Francois GOFFINET (GOFINET, GAUFFINET) first married Marie Therese GROGEAN (above). After she died, he married her first cousin, Marie Anne GROGEAN. There is nothing unusual about that. However, my attention was drawn to the name “Francois GOFFINET”.

Etennie GROGEAN, from the previous page, married Victoire MOINE. Her mother’s first husband was named Francois GOFINET, they also had a son named Francois GOFINET. The MOINE’s were from Boron, which is only 8-9 miles east of Dorans. So far, the Francois GOFFINET on this page, has not been connected to the other Francois GOFFINET’s, but perhaps more research will provide such a link, which may provide valuable information on the GROGEAN and MOINE families. Such links have proven to be very helpful while researching other families.

GROGEAN was born on April 17, 1783 in Bermont, Belfort, Franche-Comté, France. She was the third of nine known children born to Jean Pierre GROGEAN and Agatha (DUBAIL) GROGEAN.

Jeanne Marie GROGEAN had one known child in 1815. No records have been found concerning the father of this child, and the child was given the GROGEAN surname, leading to the likely conclusion that the child was born out of wedlock. The fact that he was given his mother’s maiden name leads one to believe that she was not living with the child’s father either, and for some reason, she did not disclose the father’s name to church officials (who would have likely noted it on his birth records).

Jeanne Marie GROGEAN died on March 14, 1837 in Durans, Belfort, Franche-Comté, France. No other records have been found concerning Jeanne Marie GROGEAN.

http://www.understandingyourancestors.com/ar/parishBirth.aspx Illegitimacy Illegitimacy was a common occurrence in Western Europe in the 1700 and 1800s, although

rates varied widely. Children conceived before marriage were much more common. For example, while only two to four percent of births in England in the late 1700s were illegitimate, thirty-seven percent of first births to a couple followed pre-marital conception. Rates varied from place to place. In 1820, illegitimacy rates in Germany as a whole fell just under twelve percent of all live births. In 1850, about seven percent of births in France were illegitimate, while eleven percent of those in Denmark were.

Despite the abundance of illegitimacy, children born to unmarried parents still experienced some setbacks early in life. For one thing, laws often discriminated against them. In many areas, illegitimate children couldn’t inherit property. However, if the parents married later many of the limitations didn’t apply anymore. Illegitimate children also had a higher infant mortality rate.

Illegitimacy in the 1700 and 1800s took on a much different appearance than illegitimacy today. Although it was common for couples who weren’t married to have children, it was uncommon for these couples not to marry eventually. In essence, many illegitimate children were born into family units, although their families lacked the official blessing of the state church. These couples often lived together and considered themselves families at the time of the child's birth.

Couples delayed marriages for several reasons. Sometimes, they didn’t have the money to pay the marriage fee. Other times, the church was far away or the pastor wasn’t easily accessible. Some German states, in an effort to control the booming population, placed legal restrictions on marriage, making it more difficult. And sometimes, the couple simply didn’t feel that much concern about whether marriage or children came first. Peasant society had its own marriage customs apart from the customs of the state church. In earlier times, the community had viewed living together, making a commitment to one another, and especially having children as basically equivalent to getting married. Despite valiant efforts by churches, stamping out traditions and convincing people to first perform the ceremony in a church proved difficult.
