Network and Service Transition

Enterprise Cost

Target:

From traditional single voice service to Triple-play services which integrates voice,

data and video.

Network Transition:

Fiber network is basic element of FTTx, and the replacement of copper cables with

optic cables is necessary.

Optical Access Network can meet the requirement.

PON technology, with low cost for installation/maintenance and maturity advantage, is

the foundation to implement FTTx.

Challenge 1: Downstream signals at two wavelengths

– 2 signals of different wavelengths and power:

• 1550nm CATV signal of 17dBm

• 1490nm data signal of 4dBm

Solution:

Challenge 2: How to measure upstream signal of 1310nm in

the same fiber ?

- ONU transmits 1310nm upstream signal only when OLT

activation signal received (G.983)

- ONU stops transmitting when fiber is disconnected

- Ordinary power meter won't work

Challenge 3: Test upstream sparse signal – ONU transmits 1310nm upstream signal only in certain

time slot

• OLT controls time slot

– ONU communicates with OLT periodically (100ms, due to system difference; Order of magnitude on EPON: ns)

Solution:

Power Meter supports burst mode

Splitter is the main consumption in

PON network Broadcasting from OLT

www.shinewaytech.com [email protected] 44

Solution: OTDR Application at PON Deployment Stage

Dynamic Range:

- To test fiber from end to end, the dynamic range of OTDR

should be high enough to cover PON budget loss and reserve a

≥6dB margin.

- For Class B equipment, the minimum dynamic range should

be above 33 dB.

Short dead zone:

High accuracy for testing events in short distance

First inspect the whole , then partial inspection

First diagnose and determine fault type: overall or partial/individual fault

For large scale breakdown, inspect CO (central office) first

For partial/individual fault, troubleshoot at fault point

First outdoors, then indoor inspection (on end user site)

To inspect outdoors e.g, splitter or other equipment on the end user site first.

Fault Case 1- Fault Analysis

Reason: The loss on splitter port is too high,

which cause significant signal loss on the link

Solution: 1. If this port doesn’t work, switch this user link to a spare port

Suggestion: Keep redundant backup in construction design.

2. To inspect the cleanness of fiber connector end by OCI-20 optical

connector inspector.
