10.3.1 EMULSION BASED COLD MIX TECHNOLOGIES FOR MAINTENANCE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT

CRRI has developed environment friendly and energy efficient emulsion

based cold mix technologies for repair of patches and pot-holes even in

inclement weather. Cold mixed patching materials have various benefits

over hot mixes such as elimination of heating of binder and aggregates,

easy handling, conservation of energy and protection of the environment.

The technology is ready for commercial exploitation on license basis.

The major advantages of ready-to- use cold mixes are given below:

Uniform quality of mix with high stability ( Stable and durable patches)

Proper packing with ease in transportation

Ease in application

Bonding with existing surface

Resistance to deformation, bleeding and cracking

Resistance to stripping and resistance to pushing after placement

3-5 minutes time needed to apply materials for patching

Quick setting and fast development of strength enables opening to traffic soon after patch repair

Preparation of surface for repairs is minimal, compaction by use of rammer only

Poor riding quality changes to absolute levelled road surface.

Repair is possible even in all adverse climates including wet condition

No wastage of materials and minimum manpower needed

Mixes provide quick and efficient repair of utility cuts in pavement

Vehicle damage is reduced, road users are happy while in conventional, not feasible during rains and in wet condition

10.3.2. COLD MIX TECHNOLOGY FOR MEDIUM VOLUME / RURAL ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Bituminous road construction using conventional paving grade bitumen and

hot mix technology is sometimes technically not feasible in high rainfall

areas as intermittent rains throughout the year, affect production and laying

of mixes. Similarly at high altitude and/ or in snow-bound areas, very low

pavement temperature makes the laying of hot mixes rather impossible. Use

of Bitumen emulsions eliminates the need for heating of bituminous binder

and aggregates; coats damp aggregates, prevents degradation of

environment and conserves energy.

CRRI has developed cold mix technology for different specifications- SDBC,

MSS, two coat surface dressing and PMC using concrete mixer and has

wide experiences on construction of road using emulsion based cold mix

technologies in wet and inclement weather. The field trials were carried out

on NH-1A near Patnitop (J&K) under snow bound area, Jowai - Badarpur

Road NH-44 near Silchar (Assam) under heavy rainfall and H-S Road near

Hanumangarh(Rajasthan) under desert climate. CRRI can provide technical

know-how for construction of various specifications such as BM, SDBC,

MSS, PMC and two coat surface dressing, proven through many field trials.

The technology is ready for commercial exploitation on license basis.

The photographs shown below illustrate the use of cold mix

technology and its performance

Page 8: From Individual Staff 1. NAME DR. N.K.S. PUNDHIR · 2018-04-18 · developed cold mix technology for bituminous macadam, premix carpet, mix seal surfacing and semi dense bituminous

TECHNICAL OUTCOME:

Construction of binder and wearing courses of roads with specifications BM, MSS, PMC and TCSD using bitumen emulsion is feasible in all weather including wet condition.

Environment friendly technology due to elimination of heating process

10 % Binder economy is achieved in MSS, PMC and TCSD

The sections of SDBC, MSS, PMC and TCSD using bitumen emulsion performed better than section with bitumen

TCSD with emulsion was found very good and better performance than PMC and MSS

Performance of road with emulsion using MSS, PMC and TCSD was found satisfactory even after 5 years pavement service life

Reduction of cracks propagation to overlay when emulsion is used

The cost of construction with emulsion is 10-15 % cheaper.

10.3.3 COLD MIX TECHNOLOGY FOR CONSTRUCTION OF STRUCTURAL LAYERS SUCH AS BITUMUNIOUS MACADAM, MIX SEAL SURFACING AND SEMI DENSE BITUMINOUS CONCRETE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT IN DIFFERENT CLIMATES

First time in India, the cold mix technology has been developed for

structural layers such as Bituminous Macadam (BM), Mix Seal Surfacing

(MSS) and Semi dense bituminous concrete ( SDBC) of flexible pavement

using Hot mix plant ( WITHOUT HEATING FACILITY), paver and other

infra-structure of road construction in desert, high rainfall and snow-bound

areas. In this connection, the test sections with BM, MSS and SDBC were

laid in Rajasthan ( desert climate), Mizoram ( humid and wet climate)and J

& K

10.3.4 USE OF WASTE PLASTICS AND COPPER SLAG (CS) FOR LOW COST BITUMINOUS ROADS

Solid waste management has become a major environmental

issue in India, which seeks to minimize the health, environmental

and aesthetic impacts of solid waste. Disposal of many million

tons of non-decaying plastics waste and copper slag (CS) is

responsible for health hazards and degradation of environment.

The use of waste plastics and copper slag, in hot bituminous

mixes to enhance the pavement performance, to protect the

environment and to provide low cost roads is the need of hour.

The physical properties of waste plastic modified bitumen

(WPMB) were tested and found within specified limits as per IS:

15462-2004. Using 60/70 and 80/100 bitumen, waste plastic

modified bitumen was prepared in laboratory and Delhi quartzite

aggregate, stone dust, lime and copper slag (10, 15 and 20 %)

were mixed to prepare Marshall Specimens. The Marshall

specimens were tested for density, stability, flow, retained

stability and indirect tensile strength. 15 % copper slag showed

the best in three variables. CRRI is in position to offer this mix

technology to field engineers.

Please contract Dr. N.K.S. Pundhir, Scientist for further enquiry. The e-mail is pundhirnk@ yahoo.com and [email protected]

10.3.5 Development of Bitumen Emulsions of Different Grades The use of bitumen emulsion eliminates the heating of road binder

and aggregates for protection of environment and reduction the

carbon footprints in road construction. The bitumen emulsions are

developed at CRRI using pilot plant.

Feature of CRRI Technology:

For further information, please contact to Dr. N.K.S. Pundhir, Scientist, Flexible Pavement Division, CRRI E-mail : [email protected], [email protected]

The bitumen emulsions of different

grades have been developed using

cationic emulsifiers. The grade are as

given below:

- Rapid Set (RS)

- Medium set (MS)

- Slow set (SS)

The products developed are named as

‘’Roademul – RS-2 ; Roademul - MS ;

and Roademul – SS-2” in the name of

Central Road Research Institute.

The technical know-how for production

of bitumen emulsion is available for

commercial exploitationcan be licensed

to the interested party

The Bitumen emulsion with patent

name: Wepromul - M has also been

developed for carrying out patching and

pot-hole repair in all weather including

rains and wet condition. The patent will

be filed.

10.3.6 DEVELOPMENT OF METHODOLOGY FOR EMERGENCY

REPAIR OF AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS

Emergency repair of Air Force airfields have to be carried out at

utmost priority. New development in weapon technology with

deep strike and increased demands in aircraft operations make

existing crater repair procedures inadequate. The field trials were

conducted for crater repair at Hindon and Jaisalmer Air Base. The

filling of central crater and deep adjacent area is recommended by

the use of recycled pavement aggregates of different sizes in

layers
