The Thanksgiving holiday gives us an opportunity to take a break from the many of demands of our work, to reflect on and appreciate our families, our friends and our freedom. My staff and I thank all of you for your support, work and focus on the mission of the Millstadt Senior Center. Things are very busy here but without the patrons that use our center and the

volunteers it would be a pretty boring corner. We love seeing you all every day and there are many nights I go to bed and not able to sleep because I’m excited to get here in the morning for an event or project that is happening. We have “off” days occasionally but you are always there to make us feel better. While the Center has accomplished many things this year, the Sandra M Bereitschaft Foundation is just as critical. The Foundation helps ensure the future of the Meals on Wheels program here. We are very grateful for them. If you have driven by this month you will have noticed we finally got out new 2016 Dodge Mini-van that has been a conversion package that enables us to transport wheel chairs also with it. Together with the new mini-van and a new 2016 Starcraft Bus we have received nearly $100,000 worth of vehicles free through a grant from the Department of Transportation. We are very grateful for these vehicles.

Millstadt Township News The Township Board would like to welcome Cathy Hotz Gaby as our new Township Clerk. Good Luck Cathy!! The recycling program started March 11, 1995 and continues today thanks to all the volunteers. Without you this would not be possible!! All recycling collected is saved from going to a landfill. Thanks to Millstadt Optimist Club volunteers Mike French and Ray Famula for their hard work at Recycling on Sept 3, 1.46 tons were collected. Thanks to Civic Club volunteers Barbara Hohlt, JoAnn Pisel, Judy Beussink and Juri Yolyan an Armenian foreign exchange student for the great job at Recycling on Oct 1st, 1.80 tons were collected. On Nov 5th we are looking forward to working with the Floraville Grange. During recycling, Township Trustee Fuzzy Eckert collects aluminum cans to donate to Senior Services. If possible, could you separate the cans from the other materials?

Flu Shots A Success!!!! There were 68 Flu Shots given out on October 7, 2016 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. The pharmacist from Walgreens at Belleville Crossing did an excellent job on giving a flu shot nearly every two minutes

Police Academy On October 17th, 2016 36 candidates graduated with a Certificate of Completion and a nice gift with the Millstadt Police Logo followed by a graduation party with dinner and cake. Every week they heard about the police department, talked about community policing, emergency preparedness and many other interesting topics and enjoyed a delicious supper that was provided at a discount or free by area restaurants. Lieutenant Alan Hucke offers this Academy on a bi-yearly basis and hopes that senior citizens continue to attend. Thank you Chief Ed Wilkerson and the Millstadt Police Department for giving the community this opportunity.

A Trivia Night organized to raise funds for the Meals on Wheels program has been hailed a success. With more than $5,000 raised in a few hours, the proceeds from the event held at St James Parish Center will provide funding for the Meals on Wheels program served at Millstadt Township Senior Services. President Jim Bereitschaft said he is extremely grateful to members of the community who contributed. An equally grateful Director of the Senior Center, Patty Evansco, credited the hard work of the Foundation volunteers who organized the evening. Jamie Bereitschaft, daughter of Sandra Bereitschaft and Board Member also acknowledged all the sponsors – including the venue – saying everything was donated. She also added that the Trivia night is one of several fundraising activities on the calendar including the Annual Dinner scheduled for February 7, 2016.

Very soon now it is going to begin to look a lot like Christmas at Millstadt Senior Center in Millstadt. Gifts will be wrapped in pretty holiday paper waiting for Santa’s elves, in the form of volunteers from the community and Garden Place Senior Living, to make some special deliveries. Nearly 100 senior citizens in Millstadt,

Smithton and Freeburg will be recipients of the Meals on Wheels Secret Santa program this year. Meals on Wheels is a program offered through Millstadt Township Senior Services, they are committed to serving the needs of the elderly residents within Millstadt, Millstadt Township, Smithton, Smithton Township, Freeburg and Freeburg Township since 1990. The purpose of the Millstadt Senior Center is to seek funding to promote better nutrition and additional support services for adults over the age of sixty. “We are very fortunate to have the help from Garden Place. They have volunteered to successfully run the Secret Santa program,” director Patty Evansco said. On Monday, November 7th, all Meals on Wheels clients

Santa’s Elves Are Hard at Work at Garden Place Senior Living For Meals on Wheels

will receive a Secret Santa form requesting certain gift ideas, filling out sizes and other specifications. Requests range from electric blankets to CD’s and everything in between. Then Garden Place will go to work shopping, wrapping and helping to deliver the gifts to the clients. There are 10 Meals on Wheels volunteers that routinely deliver meals at lunch to area seniors who need assistance. Many pay for the service. If you are interested in volunteering, we are always looking for help. Those who can afford it pay, but those who don’t still receive services,” Evansco said. Referrals for the home delivered meal service are screened by phone, then a caseworker completes a home visit in order to determine if a prospect is eligible to receive services. Eligibility Requirements Include: 60 years or older A resident of Millstadt, Freeburg or Smithton including Townships area. Must be primarily homebound, not able to provide transportation on their own Have some physical or cognitive limitation that prohibits ability to shop or cook Experience weight loss due to lack of nutrition Is unable to access meals at a local Senior Center Does not have a paid provider in the home that is being paid to prepare meals

Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

SHIP Corner Millstadt Township Senior Center is a sponsoring agency for Senior Health Insurance Program help and we recently received our 2016 updated Manual. During the coming months I will be sharing with you some information that I feel is important and informational. Organization and Administration of the SHIP Program: SHIP was initiated in July of 1988 by the Illinois Department of Insurance in response to the needs of Illinois’ senior citizens regarding their health insurance. In April of 2013, under Executive Order by the Governor, SHIP was transferred to the Illinois Department on Aging. The organizational structure of SHIP consists of: • The Illinois Department on Aging, which provides initial training, continuing education and ongoing support of SHIP counselors; • The sponsoring organization (Millstadt Township Senior Services), which provides coordinators, office space and office support services; • The coordinator (Patty Evansco), who is responsible for the administrative aspects of the SHIP program, which include publicizing SHIP services, recruiting volunteers, scheduling counseling sessions and responding to counselors’ needs; and • Counselor Patty Evansco meets with clients individually to provide objective information about health insurance, advocacy assistance, or referral if appropriate. The state is divided geographically into four separate SHIP regions: Cook County, Northern Illinois, Central Illinois and Southern Illinois. Within each region, counselors are organized in to units that serve a specific geographic area, usually designated by counties.

Taking a Stand to Prevent Falls At Millstadt Senior Center Many older adults restrict their activities because of concerns about falling. “Matter of Balance” is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. The Millstadt Senior Center has partnered with AgeSmart to present the evidence-based Matter of Balance training from 8:30 am to 10:30 am on Mondays and Thursdays at the Senior Center. There are currently nearly 20 people attending the ongoing Matter of Balance classes. The training looks at multiple areas and assists people in developing a fall prevention plan. In addition, instructor Ashley Duffie and her assistant Carrie Nevills share tips on senior safety. Snacks and an exercise handout provided. The event is free and there will be another one starting after Christmas. Preregistration is required. Clothing Donations Is it time to clean-out closets to make room for those Christmas gifts you know you’ll be getting? Clothing items may be donated to the Senior Center Thrift Store located on the second floor of the Community Center. Gently used clothing items are also for sale. Donations for items are requested to support Senior Center activities and the Meals on Wheels program. Remember your clothing items may also be donated to the collection box at the IGA parking lot will add to the proceeds IGA collects and donates to the Senior Center. With the help of your donations 20,000 meals were served to Seniors in Millstadt Township last year.

Open Enrollment Q: When is Medicare Open Enrollment for 2017 coverage? A: For 2017 Medicare coverage, open enrollment is from October 15 to December 7. During this annual enrollment period you can make changes to various aspects of your coverage.

You can switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, or vice versa.

You can also switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, or from one Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan to another.

And if you didn’t enroll in a Medicare Part D plan when you were first eligible, you can do so during the general open enrollment, although a late enrollment penalty may apply.

If you want to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must meet some basic criteria.

You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and B. You must live in the plan’s service area. You cannot have End-Stage Renal Disease (some exceptions

apply). Is auto-renewal available? If you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan and you don’t want to make changes to your coverage for 2017, you don’t need to do anything during open enrollment, assuming your current plan will still be available in 2017. If your plan is being discontinued and isn’t eligible for renewal, you will receive a non-renewal notice from your carrier prior to open enrollment. If you don’t, it means you can keep your plan without doing anything during open enrollment. But be aware that your benefits and premium could be changing for 2017. So even if you’re confident that you want to keep your current coverage for the coming year, it’s important to make sure you understand any changes that may apply, and that you’ve double checked to make sure that your current plan is still the best available option. The available plans and what they cover changes from one year to the next, so even if the plan you have now was the best option when you shopped last year, it’s important to verify that again before you lock yourself in for another year. Changing Medicare Advantage coverage after the AEP Between January 1 and February 14 each year, if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can leave your plan and return to original Medicare. You cannot switch to another Advantage plan unless you have a circumstance that affords you a Special Enrollment Period. After you leave your plan, you will have until February 14 to enroll in a Part D plan that will begin the first day of the following month that you enroll. Enrolling in Original Medicare If you didn’t sign up for Medicare A and B when you were first eligible, you have a chance to do so each year from January 1 to March 31, with coverage effective July 1. You may be subject to a late enrollment penalty however. For Medicare Part B, the penalty is an additional 10 percent of the premium for each 12 month period that you were eligible but not enrolled. 2017 Medicare coverage changes Changes to be aware of for 2017 include:

Medicare recipients reaching the donut hole will benefit from better prescription drug discounts. The gap in prescription drug coverage (the donut hole) starts when someone reaches the initial coverage limit ($3,700 in 2017), and ends when they have spent $4,950. Prior to 2011, Medicare Part D enrollees paid the full cost of their medications while in

the donut hole. But the ACA has been steadily closing the donut hole, and it will be fully closed by 2020. At that point, enrollees will pay just 25 percent of the cost of their drugs all the way up to the catastrophic coverage threshold. For 2017, while in the donut hole, enrollees will pay 40 percent of the cost of brand name drugs (down

from 45 percent in 2016) and 51 percent of the cost of generic drugs (down from 58 percent in 2016). The Medicare Part D deductible will be $400 in 2017.

Medicare Part B premiums will increase for those who didn’t see an increase in 2016. In 2015, most Medicare Part B enrollees paid $104.90/month for their Part B premium, although enrollees with income above $85,000 had higher premiums. For 70 percent of Part B enrollees, their premiums are deducted from their Social Security checks, and net Social Security checks cannot decrease from one year to the next. Since there was no cost of living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security in 2016, Part B premiums couldn’t increase for those enrollees (otherwise it would have resulted in a smaller net Social Security check, which is prohibited by law). But Part B costs increased, which meant premiums needed to increase for the rest of the enrollees. Ultimately, Part B premiums ended up at $121.80/month for enrollees whose premiums are not deducted from their Social Security checks, and for people who are new to Medicare in 2016. But 70 percent of enrollees are still paying $104.90/month (high-income enrollees pay additional premiums). For 2017, there’s expected to be a COLA for Social Security, so the $121.80/month Medicare Part B is expected to apply to all enrollees, with higher premiums for high income enrollees.

Medicare Advantage plans continue to see changes. While healthcare reform is slowly reducing rebates paid to Medicare Advantage plans, these plans continue to be popular. 30 percent of Medicare recipients were enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan in 2015 – a significant increase from the enrollment total in 2009 when the ACA was signed into law. Most people will continue to have dozens of Medicare Advantage plans as well as Part D plans available to them. However, these providers can change the coverage options they offer from year to year so it’s important to stay up-to-date.

Most Medicare beneficiaries should have received their Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and Evidence of Coverage (EOC) from their existing Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plan providers by Sept. 30. CMS will make information available to the public on Medicare.gov in October. The Medicare website is also a tremendous asset for individuals with questions about Medicare rules, timelines, Medicare Part D, etc. It’s important to carefully review the information sent to you by your plan provider, since this will cover any possible changes. For example, increasing co-pays, changes to drug formularies or changes to treatment coverage. Once open enrollment gets underway, you can make changes that reflect your current health coverage needs.

Sylvester G. "Tuffy" Mueth Sylvester G. "Tuffy" Mueth, 88, of Millstadt, Ill., born Feb. 12, 1928 in Paderborn, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016 at Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, Ill. Tuffy retired as a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, Ill., Carpenter's Local #433, Quail Club of Millstadt, Ill., Millstadt's Sportman's Club, Charter member of

the Millstadt Knights of Columbus, Charter member of the Millstadt Commercial Club, managed Millstadt Mon-Clair baseball team for over 50 years, Inaugural member of the Mon-Clair League Hall of Fame, and received the lifetime achievement award for the Mon-Clair League. Tuffy was preceded by in death by his wife, Helen Mueth, nee Rehg; his parents, Joseph & Anna, nee Becker, Mueth; his brothers, Arthur, Herbert, Cletus, Emil, Raymond, Henry and Erwin; his sisters, Luella and Aurelia; and a sister in infancy. Surviving are his daughter, Kim (Bill) Klopmeyer; sons, Joel (Lynne) Mueth & Steve Mueth; grandchildren, Jamie (Jared) Keck, Natalie Klopmeyer (Fiance, Justin Stephens), Jenny (Adam) Miear, Tara (Ryan) Radake, and Jared Mueth; great grandchildren, Sam Miear, Cooper Miear, C.J. Stephens, Lucy Keck and Max Radake; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A special thank you to all the people who let Tuffy fish at his favorite "honeyholes" and to all of his fishing buddies. Maurice Zollner Maurice T. Zollner, 72, of Millstadt, Ill., born Oct. 8, 1944, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill. Maurice was an electrical engineer and an Associate Technical Fellow for the Boeing Corporation before his retirement. He was a U.S.

Army veteran and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice T. and Martha, nee Eledge, Zollner. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Barbara A. Zollner, nee Etling, whom he married on Sept. 30, 1968; two sons, Timothy (Melissa) Zollner of Edwardsville, Ill., and Dennis (Ann) Nadler of O'Fallon, Ill.; one daughter, Denise McAteer of Millstadt, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Brooke McAteer (fiance Kyle Hoerchler), Cory Hepworth, Joseph and Matthew Zollner, Riley and Nathaniel Nadler, and Callen and Christian Spencer; two brothers, Michael (Linda) Zollner, and Mark (Sherry) Zollner, both of Sparta, Ill.; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Jacqueline McQuaid Jacqueline Jane McQuaid was born Nov. 30, 1931 in Murphysboro, Ill. to Arthur and Nedra, nee Hanson, Green. Her life really began when she met her soul mate Lester and they married July 16, 1950. They lived in Pinckneyville for a time, and finally made their way to Millstadt, Ill. The two of them were made for

each other in every way. Theirs was a love that could never be described. From this love they had two children, Lester Jr. and Esther. They lost their son Lester in 2002. She lost her physical soul mate in 2004, but she never did lose the emotional soul mate. It has been a long time for her to be without her husband, but now she's back with him forever again. This beautiful lady leaves Simon, her daughter Esther and her children Alison (Kim) and Patrick (Kristin)and. Her son's children Cheryl (Chris) and their son Cameron, Julie (Shawn) Hampton, and Lester (Chris) Cornelius. Jackie came from a rather large family, 16 kids. Lillian, Bobby and Ricky left before her. Jimmy, Ida, Linda, Gary, Tommy, Wayne, Georgia, RuthAnn, Dot, Peggy, Arcille and their families are still with us. The most important thing ever in her life has always been her family. They meant everything to her. She would do anything and everything to help them and take care of them. Mom, "we" love you.

Dr. Angela Wingo-Rust Dr. Angela L. Wingo-Rust, nee Bickel, 47 of Millstadt, Ill., born Sunday, Sept. 21, 1969, in Belleville, Ill., died Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at her home. Angela worked as the Dean of Students for Lindenwood University in Belleville, Ill, and was co-owner of the Public Safety Specialist Group.

Surviving are her husband, Robert M. Rust of Millstadt, Ill.; children, Jordan S. Wingo of O'Fallon, Ill., and Taylor J. Wingo of O'Fallon, Ill.; step-children, Chase L. Rust of Belleville, Ill., and Daryn A. Rust of Belleville, Ill.; parents, Melvin L. and Linda R., nee Ridley, Bickel of Collinsville, Ill.; brother, Richard S. (Sondra) Bickel of O'Fallon, Ill.; sister, Amanda J. Bickel of Glendale, Mo.; nieces, Kaitlyn Bickel, Samantha Bickel, and Sophia Rose Bickel; and grandmother, Olliebelle Ridley of Murphysboro, Ill.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them. Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. RECYCLING PROGRAM Recycling continues the first Saturday of every month at the Township Garage on East Harrison Street. Volunteers will remove the recyclables, glass, cans, paper, cardboard and number 1 and 2 plastics from your vehicle from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. This program is available for all residents of Millstadt Township and the Village.
