As we get to the end of 2010 and almost halfway through the year as Division Governor, I look back on what the Division has
achieved. The journey so far has been full on and great fun. I have enjoyed the time where I have been involved in contests, the
conference, workshops and Club Leadership, and most of all having the opportunity to meet and talk with you.
We have had many successes during the first six months.
Sunday Afternoon Toastmasters chartered in November. Rob Julian and Wayne Buck represented Division E in the District 72
Table Topics and Humorous Speech Contest. Wellington Professionals was the first Club in District 72 to achieve all ten goals of
the Distinguished Club Plan. Island Bay has achieved six goals, and Business Breakfast, Five Crowns and Turbine Talkers have
achieved five goals each. Steve Preston, ACG,ALB and Sarah Bate, DTM achieved the “Triple Peak Award.”
This award is made to any member in good standing who during the same Toastmasters year:
• Achieved one communications award (CC, ACB, ACS, ACG), and
• Achieved one leadership award (CL, ALB, or ALS only) and
• Personally sponsored at least three new members of Toastmasters (excludes dual and reinstated members).
Diane Isherwood achieved the District 72 Toastmaster of the Year Award.
It is time for our Clubs to review the Distinguished Club Program. Are your members on track to achieve their goals? Are your
clubs on track to achieve their goals? What do you need to do? There are many clubs who have three, four or more goals. We
need to ensure that our clubs meet our membership goals. How are we going to do this?
Toastmaster’s week - in the first two weeks of March is an opportunity for us to showcase our club, to showcase Toastmasters
to our community and to organisations. What is your club going to do to promote Toastmasters? What is your Area going to do
to promote Toastmasters? Do you have an idea or ideas? Contact your Club Officers or Area Governor and share your ideas.
Club Leadership Training – Mid-year training allows you to check in with others about all the duties involved in your position
and to think about ways to handle them. We have already held two training sessions in December. We had two informative and
interactive sessions covering topics including Critical Success factors, Re-alignment, Succession Planning and Quality Meetings.
We enjoyed running the sessions and have had some positive comments:

“Really useful sessions – I got a lot of new ideas and feel re-energised”
“Very interactive and engaging evening”
“Great training session – much more interactive than previously – best training I’ve had in 2 years on a committee”

The Toastmasters’ educational program is the heart of every Toastmasters club. It provides
members with a proven curriculum that develops communication and leadership skills one
step at a time, with many opportunities for awards and recognition along the way. It is
important that we recognise and acknowledge the achievements of our Club members
when they receive an award.

Spinnaker celebrates 20th anniversary on 7 December 2010
Spinnaker Toastmasters Club held its 20th Anniversary Celebration and Xmas Breakup meeting on Tuesday 7 December at the
Bradey Room in Whitby. In attendance were the District Governor,
Denis McCord DTM, Lt Governor Education and Training, Steve
Bullock DTM, and Area Governor Kath Cherrie. Recent past members
of Spinnaker, David and Velma Knight also attended, along with Sylvia
Nicholson, Alan Martin and Jocelyn Syme from Kapi-Mana@Tawa
Toastmasters, (Jocelyn also representing Porirua Central).
The District Governor congratulated the club on its achievements, and
outlined the history of Toastmasters in New Zealand. Lt Gov Education
and Training also congratulated the club and talked about his linkages
with the club and its members over the last 14 years, and how
Toastmasters has helped him in his career. Finally David Knight, a
charter member of the club explained how the club came to be
formed, and its various achievements over the years. He also
acknowledged Sylvia Nicholson's late husband George Nicholson, also
a charter member of the club.
Following supper, President Shona Smith presented club members
with trophies and awards for the year, and the District Governor
presented the President with the Toastmasters International 20th Anniversary Certificate.
Kapi Mana@Tawa... Toastmaster of the Year – Kapi Mana@Tawa... Facing up to the fear of public speaking… and enjoying it
There’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of public speaking without notes. So says Jocelyn Syme, who was named
Toastmaster of the Year for Kapi Mana @ Tawa Toastmasters at the club’s annual prize giving held in Porirua on 6 Dec 2010.
Although this is her first full year of being a Toastmaster, Ms Syme is
already serving as Vice President Education for the Tawa club and as
President of Porirua Central Toastmasters. The Toastmaster of the Year
award recognises the member who has done the most for the Club in the
current year.
“Many people join Toastmasters because they’re afraid of public speaking.
That’s an excellent move because at Toastmasters, we provide a friendly,
non threatening environment in which you can practise and grow in
confidence, “ Ms Syme says.
Part of the meeting is devoted to evaluations of speeches, so speakers and
others in the audience get plenty of tips on how to improve further. In her
role as Vice President Education, she is kept busy organising the
programme and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to meet their goals.
That level of support and encouragement was partly why Ms Syme received
the top award.
“I’ve really benefitted from getting involved in Toastmasters. I used to write
official speeches for Ministers of the Crown and the Governor General as
part of my job many years ago, but it’s quite different when you have to get
up and deliver your own speech,” Ms Syme says. She is now working as a
teacher at St Mary’s College.
A highlight for her this year was representing Kapi Mana@ Tawa
Toastmasters at the Area Impromptu Speech contest, in which she was
placed third. She also represented her other club, Porirua Central, in the
Humorous Speech contest. “That was surprisingly difficult, delivering a
seven minute speech with no notes. That’s when you have to conquer your fear of forgetting what you want to say and, instead,
to make use of that adrenaline rush! “And by doing it yourself, it means you can also help others become better speakers too.
It’s also a lot of fun writing these speeches and working out how to make people laugh or keep them listening,” she says.

Officer roles are multi-faceted. Many times, these positions involve behind-the-scenes work seldom realized or appreciated by
members. Rarely do we do everything we’re supposed to during our first six months in a role – maybe not even in a whole year.
Midyear training allows you to check in with others about all the duties involved in your position and to think about ways to
handle them.

NOTE THIS – IMPORTANT MATERIAL FOR YOU ALL
A Discussion Paper with proposals for a realignment of some Divisions was available for review and feedback before Sunday
12th December 2010. This is of particular interest to Division E as all options involve a split of our division.
Each year Districts are required to review and amend if necessary, the alignment of the clubs, areas, and divisions within their
boundaries. The result is subject to the approval of the District Council at its annual business meeting in May. A number of
factors are considered including the requirement that each area must have a minimum of four clubs and a maximum of six clubs.
For the 2010-2011 year District 72 Council approved a number of areas with three clubs recognising that each area had a club in
formation or a club to be formed within one area, and one area with seven clubs, and an undertaking that a major review would
be undertaken for the 2011-2012 year.
Past Distinguished District Governor Joy Ackrill is convenor of the District Alignment Committee. The committee has considered
the problems and developed several options for realigning the divisions in the North Island. It does not believe any division
