Important news from the national level, the ASPE National PE Working Group is actively working towards achieving the goal of obtaining support from 10 states (minimum) to have a plumbing option within the Mechanical Engineering Principles and Practice of Engineering examination. NCEES will begin working with ASPE to take the next steps to develop this option once we have the support of 10 states.

A few key items to note:

» The goal is to achieve plumbing as an option within the existing Mechanical Engineering Principles and Practice exam. The group is not attempting to pursue Plumbing Engineering as a separate designation.

» Currently licensed engineers will not be impacted.

» Two states, Ohio and Arizona have provided their support.

APRIL DESIGN CLASSTOPIC: MI Plumbing Code - Hot Water Requirements

APRIL TECHNICAL PROGRAMTOPIC: Design Strategies for Multi-Temperature Hot Water Systems

Presenter: Alan Deal P.E. President, Performance Engineering Group, Inc. When designing a hot water supply system the plumbing designer is faced with making many decisions and assumptions.

This course will explain the different types of loads, water heating systems and sizing resources available. The course will focus on strategies to deliver multiple water temperatures to various building systems, including proper master mixing device sizing and selection, recirculation for multiple pressure zones and re-circulation rate calculation. ASHRAE Standard 188 Legionella potential design implications will also be addressed.

Alan is president of Performance Engineering Group, Inc. Performance Engineering Group has been actively involved in designing and marketing domestic hot water and hydronic heating systems since 1964. Performance Engineering Group has been involved with hundreds of energy conservation projects across a broad spectrum of market segments, including renewable energy and waste energy solutions. They specialize in providing complete, engineered packages to the installation contractor including materials and design and are an active trade ally with all commercial and multifamily Energy Optimization providers in the State of Michigan. Alan has received many industry awards including multiple ASHRAE technology awards for energy conservation activities, ASPE-Eastern Michigan Chapter Engineer of the year, and a Radiant Panel Association Hall of Fame Nominee.

Hello from your VP Tech!

I hope you all had a good March and are getting ready for spring, which in my opinion can’t get here soon enough!

our tabletop and event sponsors last month:

March Meeting Sponsors: R.L. Deppmann, DS Howley and New Century Sales!

Okay, so as mentioned last month, I want to take a couple minutes to address another hot topic related to storm drainage: burst rates or microbursts.

Or do you use the standard, code required rainfall intensity of a 100

rainfall rate. Now, ASPE books have long talked about engineers looking at not only the 100 year, 60 minute rainfall rate when designing your storm system, but to also look at the 10 year, 5 minute storm. The ASPE Research Foundation storm drainage report also stated, on page 73 under “Recommended Changes to the Plumbing Codes” heading: “The new sizing method should include sizing based on the two rainfall rates. The 60-minute storm with a 100-year return period should remain the design criteria for the

year return period should be added to the plumbing codes. The sizing of the system should include calculations for the maximum ponding at the roof drain based on these two storms.”

RF report does “recognize that only one storm will regulate size.

impossible to determine which storm will result in the greatest amount of ponding at the roof drain.” In my personal experience, in the last two projects I have looked at this – the burst rate has resulted

Now the 2015 IPC still only calls for the design to meet the rainfall intensity of the 60-minute, 100-year return period storm, it did not change to include the shorter burst rate. So, technically, unless the AHJ has their own rainfall rate amendment, this is the only rainfall rate you need to look at. However, we all know the code is just the minimum requirements we need to meet.

which I agree is the best strategy, is to run the calculations for both rates, and if the worst case rate (likely the burst rate) only increases the drains and piping by one pipe size – then use that rate and document it in the project’s basis of design document. If the worst

should discuss with their client what direction they would like to use for the project.

One more item to note, I also recommend that engineers also check the latest NOAA data when it comes to these rainfall rates and

VP Technical ReportTheresa Allen, PE, CPD, LEED AP BD+C, GPD

compare it to what is listed in the code you are using. You can

http://hdsc.nws.noaa.gov/hdsc/pfds/

So, as always, any comments or questions or if you want to just talk storm drainage for a while – let me know!

In closing, and most importantly: REMEMBER TO SUPPORT THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE CHAPTER!

Sincerely,

Theresa Allen, PE, CPD, and your VPT

I owe everyone an apology. I have not written an article in months. Please forgive me.

What has happened over the past few --

vention Conference. It was wonderful to have ASPE Executive Director/CEO

Scriboni attend. They each made sure their comments were heard. Good for ASPE!

The industry also heard from representatives from PDI, Miami-Dade County, Michigan, Ohio, and grease intercep-tor manufactures from around the world.

Business opportuni-ties took me to New York, Ohio, and P e n n s y l v a n i a .

February started off with the Michigan ASSE Awards Ban-quet. It was wonder-ful to have ASPE Region 2 Director Keith Bush and his lovely wife Patty. I was shocked when I received the L. Glen Shields Award. I guess the nomina-tion committee ran out of names to consider.

I coordinated. Luckily for me, NSF has hosted these events

over when an NSF icon named Tom Stevens retired. It is important to note that Tom has donated 109 pints of blood.

pints of blood for our local hospitals.

The BOMA NY Pinnacle Awards also took place in February.

I was honored to be a part of an annual event that recognizes Class A buildings for their renovations, energy savings, sustain-ability and other characteristics.

March included the Water Infrastructure Conference held in Flint, MI. Governor Rick Snyder and Flint Mayor Karen Weaver were the event co-chairs. There was plenty of interesting prod-ucts and rehabilitation ideas presented. During the event, in was announced that the CDA (Copper Development Association) donated $1,000,000 dollars of soft copper to replace the existing lead-service lines to residence homes in need of replacement. Flint has decided copper is their material of choice.

I traveled back to New York to attend the BuildingsNY 2017 conference. This is another event where building owners and

property managers are in the spotlight.

So what is next you

ready to have the Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE host the Region 2 Presidents’ Meeting June 2-3. It will be a blast. Friday hap-pens to be the Grand Prix time trials and it is free to those attending. We are making travel avail-able to those wish-
