18 January 2011 Frigoglass North America becomes the First Beverage Cooler Company in the US to use the Environmentally-friendly Insulation Agent Cyclopentane Athens, Greece: 18 January 2011 Frigoglass North America announces that is has chosen cyclopentane (C5) as the insulation agent for its beverage coolers, in line with manufacturing practices across the rest of Frigoglass’ plants. Frigoglass is the first beverage cooler manufacturer in the US that uses cyclopentane as an insulating agent. C5, a natural substance, is used as a blowing agent in the manufacture of polyurethane insulating foam, which has a Global Warming Potential of 11, Ozone Depletion Potential of Zero and only a few days of atmospheric lifetime. This development further evidences Frigoglass’ commitment to utilizing technology in order to fulfill its customers’ Sustainability programs, whilst also respecting and helping the environment. The related capital investment was in excess of $1 million. Fernand Saad, Senior Technical Representative of BASF Corp., commented: “By investing in a cyclopentane process at their South Carolina facility, it is apparent that Frigoglass continues to be a forerunner in providing products that are eco- friendly. Frigoglass is the first manufacturer of commercial reach-in refrigerated merchandisers in the US to employ cyclopentane, a liquid blowing agent that provides a product that has Zero Ozone Depletion, is halogen free, with virtually no Global Warming Effect (GWP of 11), and an insulation factor that allows products to hold temperature longer without additional energy consumption.” David Thomson, Frigoglass North America VP Operations, commented: “Frigoglass remains committed to providing its customers with superior solutions for their unique needs as well as continuing to focus and lead the way on innovation and new product development across all markets it operates. As part of this, the sustainability of our products and their impact on the environment is a key priority, and we are leading the sector in this field. MiraCool, our complete product range of environmentally-friendlier coolers for the North American Market, marks a significant step in this direction with Energy Star Performance, use of Recycled plastic parts and now environmentally-friendly insulation agent.”
