INTRODUCTION

We are glad to introduce to you the Friend of Nature Network its goal, activities, work plan, Eco Saturday and the groups that are involved.

The network was formed two years ago to bring groups that were working along the Nairobi and Gitathuru rivers in Nairobi with the current

activity in “karungu” between Korogocho area and redeemed gospel church “kasabuni”.

GOAL

Create sustainable jobs which conserve nature

ACTIVITIES

The networks main activity is

Preparation of tree nurseries on rehabilitated dumpsites along the rivers

Planting tree along the rivers, in institutions and in other public space availed by local authority

Sales of indigenous/non indigenous tree seedlings, grafted seedlings with greater emphasis on fruit and other productive trees.

Production of bio fuel briquettes as a means to provide sustainable fuels from recycled waste.

WORK PLAN

The network has a simple work plan, Every Saturday the groups participate in ECO SATURDAY. Members participate in the activities of the day

from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

ECO SATURDAY

Every Saturday the members of the network engage in the following activities along the river,

Rehabilitation dumpsite

Nursery preparation

Potting

Tree planting

This activity involves the community in general, especially children for sustainability purposes.

MEMBERS OF THE NETWORK

The following groups are currently the permanent members of the network.

1. Grogan Korogocho Development Group (CBO)

2. A One A We self Help Group (SHG)

3. Nairobi North Conservancy (CSO)

4. The Hut of Orphans of Kenya. (NGO)- IT and online support

5. The community

The total members of groups drawn in this activity is at an average of 120 persons

ACHIEVEMENTS

We have successfully rehabilitated approximately one hectare of dumpsites along the rivers and afar.

Planted a substantial amount of trees along the rivers and other areas operation.

Produced over approximately 50 tons of briquettes from recovered waste for the past 24 months.

Potted and supplied over 20,000.00 assorted seedlings.
