Has it been hot enough for you? It has for me. Another month has shot past me and its newsletter time again. This year is flying by. Let’s see what your chapter has been up to.
Maybe it was a good thing that not a lot was scheduled for August, as it was very hot. There were 2 Ice cream rides. The big event for the moth was the Moonlight Ride. Of course, mother nature was messing with us and the only motorcycles on the ride was our 2 guests from Maryland. If I counted correctly we had 15 including our guests for the ride and dinner. I can say that I have never been the little restaurant that we ate at but the food was good and the group sat out on the porch, which turned out nice after the weather front moved through. The rain actually held off pretty good and our guests from Maryland only ran through a small shower on I-64 on their way back to their camper in Virginia Beach.
Let’s talk about the future. The Big One Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville, TN is my guesstimate is correct I believe that 18 Chapter C members will be attending. That will be the largest group in a long time. I’m sure there will be many stories to be shared at our September Gathering. September 8th will be a ride to Fat Boys in Carrolton. September 14-16 will be the Highlands ride. Randi sent out hotel and departure times earlier. I’m sure she has an interesting route laid out for us. September 21-23 will be the Fall Camping trip out to Marion, VA. I know that Brent has a good ride set up and maybe some surprises. The next weekend will be Fall Sprawl set-up and clean up on September 29. Cundiff decided not to leave the tent set up for over a month so we need a good crew to come out and prepare for Fall Sprawl. Then the Granddaddy of them all Fall Sprawl 2018 on October 6th. We will have camping starting on Friday the 5th and I am confident that a lot of fun ad work will take place over the weekend. The weekend following fall sprawl on the 13th will be the fall bike clinic at Donna’s house and the next day will be the monthly Chapter gathering on October 14th. As you can
see not a weekend off busy, busy, busy.

It seems that recently there’s been no need to check the weather forecast. A “chance of showers/thunderstorms” has pretty much been prevalent around here. We were glad to hear that the rain didn’t stop some of our members from enjoying at least the dinner portion of the recent Moonlight Ride. Although Lynn & I didn’t make it, it
sounded like all who went had fun and are looking forward to doing it again.
It was very nice to meet Danny & Paulette Horton of MD-L who visited at our August gathering. They joined the Moonlight Ride group and really had a good time! They said
that Chapter C really welcomed them like family!
Wing Ding will have come and gone by the time you read this. I am really excited about my first time at Wing Ding and seeing everything it has to offer!
After that, I’ll be in full Fall Sprawl mode: lining up the steaks and potatoes, making the marinade and getting everything ready for grilling. We can’t emphasize enough how important this event is to our Chapter. There are many moving parts to ensure a successful outing and we’re counting on our members! We have a great team that works well together and there’s no reason that this year should be any different. Keep an eye out on your email as information will be coming fast and furious as the event gets closer.
Until next time, ride safe and we will “C” you at our next gathering on Sunday, September 9th!

Couple of the Year
2018
Dave and Randi Green
We were thrilled to have such a great turnout for the Moonlight Ride on August 11th! Since the forecast that day was
calling for …wait for it…RAIN…we decided rather than cancel, we’d just go with 4-wheeled transportation instead. We ended up having 15 VA-C members and 2 visitors from MD-L (on their bike/trike) make the ride to Woodie’s Riverhouse in Lanexa. They reserved their outdoor porch area for us and the storm stayed just far enough away to provide us with a gentle breeze as enjoyed dinner along the banks of the Chickahominy River. The folks at Woodie’s were thrilled to have us and we’ll definitely have it on our “to-do” list for future rides.
The next couple of months will be busy ones for our chapter. By the time this newsletter comes out, several of our members will have returned from Wing Ding. We are so fortunate that it is pretty close this year so that more could attend. We’re sure there will be lots of stories to be told and we’re looking forward to hearing them!
Our Highlands Ride is coming up September 14-16. There are still a few rooms left so we’d love to have you join us as we take this scenic ride through the highlands of Virginia and West Virginia!
Fall Sprawl is right around the corner! If you haven’t registered yet, it’s time to do so! This is a super fun event for us and our fellow GWRRA friends! It’s also the main event for our chapter so all hands are needed. An email will be sent out shortly detailing the exact manpower needs for that day. Volunteers will be needed to help set up that morning, work the games, set up for lunch, assist with the Chapter Challenge, and other duties. Please don’t forget that each chapter member is asked to provide a dessert and a gift for the prize table.
That’s it for now. Wherever your travels take you, enjoy and be safe!
Hope to “C” you soon,
Dave & Randi Back to Top

Have you noticed...
... that time is moving too fast? We think we are ahead of things, then take another look and
we aren't! Everyone will say “Take One Step at a Time.” Sometimes that works for some
people and others get too far behind. You really need to stop and look at yourself before
taking on more responsibilities. We all mean well and good when this happens, but it really
puts more stress on yourself. Other people can see what’s going on with you and there are
others that can help to take some of the stress off. We all would like to do good, but then it
backfires on you. Others would say “what just happened”? Slow Down and smell at the Roses.
The Chapter COY plaque headed to the Chapter R social on Aug.5th. It's a little way up the
road. The weather was clear and hot around 91 degrees. We had enough rain all ready! It was
a good time to ride the bikes. Allen & I hope to see more Couples there to take the plaque
away to other chapters. It seems to be the same couples all of the time. Why is that? If you
need a ride, Allen & I could be happy to meet you someplace and ride together. There's
always a way to travel with other couples. Just have fun with your travels and be safe.
Allen & I joined in with Chapter B1 on Saturday July29th for the Flying Circus. Chapter B1 had
planned a great ride. We rode with Jim & Beverly Evans (CD), LeRoy & Melissa Gross, Andy, Al
and me. Gates open at 11am on Sundays. If you are planning on taking a ride in one of the
planes, arrive before 1pm. All of their airplane rides are on a first-come, first-served basis.
After the airshow around 4:30, they resume the ride operation until all rides were finished.
Well, Melissa was first to ride before the show and she loved it. Then, after the show Andy
took his ride with the ticket Beverly had won on her door prize. LeRoy was the last aviator.
They all enjoyed the rides. Turned out to be a great day for all of us.
Come on out and join the Fun!

Did You Know.... There are, as of this writing, twenty-nine Districts that have District Motorist Awareness Coordinators. So, one might ponder what does that mean to GWRRA Members or any motorcyclist? It means that there are Districts in our organization that do not have a coordinator to help Chapters get the important message out to the non-riding public that they should watch for motorcycles when driving on our public roads. One would certainly hope that some individuals in Chapters in those Districts are trying to get the word out and doing their part to help more people be aware of motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, bicycles, and pedestrians are on the same roads. Current District Motorist Awareness Program Coordinators have MAP resources such as trifolds and coloring booklets for children to help get the message across to the driving public. District Directors, I am certain, would not refuse the help. If you know your District does not have a MAPC (Motorist Awareness Program Coordinator), consider it and visit with your District Director about it. If they don’t have the answers, I am certain they know to contact one of the Directors or Assistant Directors of MAP or the Home Office to obtain information about the program. We would love to have you as part of the program.

And then there were the Harley Riders
Written, Directed and Stared by Dan ‘Big Smoke’ Jones
After the tire episode, the “On the road” saga continues….
Had a great time visiting with mom in PA even though it was spent away from my
wonderful wife. Did I mention it was our 35th anniversary? It came time to depart
Sunday morning and the weather forecast was perfect for riding.
I set out and hit the interstate, and yes, I did do my pre-ride checks this time. About 15
minutes into the ride I merged onto I-79 South. There happened to be 4 high dollar
Harley baggers in front of me so I thought, should be nice riding with these guys
(smirk). So, a twist of the grip and off we went. I looked down and my speed was
saying 85-90. Yeah, even though I had 450 miles to go I wasn't in that big of a hurry. I
backed down and they cranked it up and quickly disappeared.
About 45 miles down the road (remember that milled concrete I mentioned in last
month’s article) I slowed and took it about 50 MPH. Half way through the construction
area I come across the baggers. On the side of the road. Slowing down I see one of
them carrying a road rashed saddle bag and another picking up the spilled contents
scattered along the road. They had the situation covered so I cautiously continued.
Came across another couple HD riders a man leading the way and his wife following on
a Sportster. These were loud, so I kept back and followed at a distance.
Now on I-68 they were keeping a nice pace. All of a sudden, the sportster wants to get
up beside her husband for whatever reason, she cut right in front of an SUV and I see
smoke from tires locking up. I thought I was going to be the first at the scene of an
unimaginable wreck. Somehow it turned out well and I doubt she even saw how close
it was. They turned off shortly after that and I continued on.
The next encounter was with a couple older guys on Harleys on Rt 17 outside
Warrenton Virginia. They were running my speed so I fell in line and we traveled about
15 miles when they start braking, hard. I kicked mine down too. We came to a stop.
Ducks! Freaking ducks in the road. We looked at each other and shook our heads.

GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings September 2018 9
Another 10 miles down the road we had to brake hard again while going through an
intersection. A truck (firetruck) coming through with no siren, just the high-pitched
scream. Sounded like a brake squeal to me, should have been using that horn or at
least the warble function on the siren. It wasn't that close and we weren't speeding
just an unexpected event and quick stop at a green light.
As we came up to the light in Fredericksburg I pulled up beside them and told them it
was a nice ride but I'm not riding with them anymore. Ducks and Trucks! We laughed
and went our separate ways.
The rest of the way was uneventful and made it home before dark. I guess I'll have to
get another ride in for next month’s adventures. Thanks for reading.
