    What is Perception ?

A process by which individuals organize and interprettheir sensory impressions in order to give meaning to

    their environment.

Peoples behavior is based on their perception of

what reality is, not on reality itself.

The Development of Perception and Action

It takes only a few months

    before a newborn infant starts

to reach for toys and objects in

a goal directed manner. How do

    infants learn which objects are

    graspable and which not? What

    visual information do infants

    use to guide their reaching

    movements ?

Amodal perception is the term used to

describe the full perception of a physical

structure when it is only partially perceived.

Modal completion is a similar phenomena in

which a shape is perceived to be occluding

other shapes even when the shape itself is notdrawn.

Depth perception is the visual ability to

perceive the world in three dimensions.Although any animal capable of moving

around its environment must be able to sense

the distance of objects in that environment.

Depth perception arises from a variety of

depth cues. These are typically classified

into binocular cues that require input from

both eyes and monocular cues that requirethe input from just one eye

The viewer sees the size and detail of the scene as if it were close enough

to touch, but the camera's perspective is still derived from its actual

position a hundred meters away, so background faces and objects appear

about the same size as those in the foreground.

Trained artists are keenly aware of the various methods forindicating depth and take advantage of them to make their works appear

    "real"

    Managing Perceptual Process

Have a high level of self-awareness:

Individual needs, experience, and expectations can all affect perceptions. The successful manager knows this and is able to identifywhen he or she is inappropriately distorting a situationbecause of such perceptual tendencies.

Seek information from various sources to confirm or

disconfirm personal impressions of a decision situation:The successful manager minimizes the biases of personalperceptions by seeking out the viewpoints of others. Theseinsights are used to gain additional perspective onsituations and the problems or opportunities theyrepresent.

Be empathetic-thatis, be able to see a situation as it isperceived by other people:Different people will define thesame situation somewhat differently. The successfulmanager rises above personal impressions to understandproblems as seen by other people.

    20/33

Avoid common perceptual distortionsthat bias our views of people and

situations: These distortions include theuse of stereotypes and halo effects, aswell as selective perception andprojection. Successful managers are self-disciplined and sufficiently self-aware sothat the adverse impacts of these

    distortions are minimized.Diversity management programmes:As

firms globalize themselves, diversitymanagement assumes greater relevance.

The challenge for corporate executives is to

leverage the benefits of this diversity whileminimizing the perceptual and behaviouralproblems that tend to accompanyheterogeneity.

    21/33

OB experts have designed diversity management

programmes. Typically, these trainingprogrammes serve two purposes. First, theycommunicate the value of diversity. Second, theseprogrammes help participants become aware oftheir personal biases and give them moreaccurate information about people with differentbackgrounds, thus avoiding perceptualdistortions.

Know yourself: Apply the Johari window to knowthe real self. A powerful way to minimize

perceptual biases is to know and become moreaware of ones values, beliefs, and prejudice.

    BRAND PERCEPTION

The purpose of conducting a brandperception survey is to understand how your

brand is viewed in the market, what brand

attributes are preferred by customers, and to

    identify how your customers competitively

    position your products/services.

    Successfully measuring brand equity and

awareness can help companies tailor theirmarketing mix in a way that is not only cost-

effective but also strategic in the long run.
