The Essential Role of the Assembly Let’s all together and each of us internally and
externally renew our “full, conscious, active and fruitful participation” in the Mass
One of the four ways Jesus shows His Loving Pres-ence is through the Assembly. We may not realize how powerful an influence we may have on another at Mass (or Jesus through us!). And who of us has not had our faith and hope uplifted because of someone else or the whole assembly at Mass? Let’s pray about what our Church teaches us about this in the Catechism from Dogmatic Council Docu-ments:
What is the Divine Liturgy? The word “liturgy” originally meant a “public work” or a “service in the name of/on behalf of the peo-ple.” In Christian tradition it means the participation of the People of God in “the work of God.” Through the liturgy Christ, our redeemer and high priest, continues the work of our redemption in, with, and through his Church. Every liturgical celebration, because it is an action of Christ the priest and of his Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others. No other action of the Church can equal its efficacy.
Liturgy as a Source of Life As the work of Christ liturgy is also an action of his Church. It makes the Church present and manifests her as the visible sign of the communion in Christ between God and men. It engages the faithful in the new life of the community and involves the conscious, active, and fruitful participation” of everyone.
Who Are the Celebrants of the Liturgy? It is the whole community, the Body of Christ united with its Head, that celebrates. Liturgical services are not private functions but are celebrations of the Church which is ‘the sacrament of unity.’ “Rites which are meant to be celebrated in common, with the faithful present and actively participating, should as far as possible be celebrated in that way rather than by an individual and quasi-privately.” Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that full, conscious, and active partici-pation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy, and to which the Chris-tian people, “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people” have a right and an obliga-tion by reason of their Baptism. In the celebration of the sacraments it is thus the whole assembly that is leitourgos, each according to his function, but in the unity of the Spirit who acts in all.
The Sunday Eucharist: Obligation The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confir-mation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. The faithful give witness by this to their communion in faith and charity. Together they testify to God’s holiness and their hope of salvation. They strengthen one another under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

JOKE OF THE WEEK The Importance of Exercise
I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I’m doing.
The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they’ll say, “Well, he looks good doesn’t he.”
If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
I joined a health club last year, spent about $250. Haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there!
Every time I hear the dirty word “exercise” I wash my mouth out with chocolate.
I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years—just getting over the hill.

“Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.” MATTHEW 21:28
God does not just invite us to do His work. He clearly commands us, “Go out and work in the vineyard. “ How can we work in God’s vineyard when we have job and family responsibilities? We can follow God’s command through prayer, sharing some of our talents in parish ministry and donating some of the income we make at our jobs to support God’s work in the world.
We pray that we may not refuse or ignore Our Lord’s com-mand to go out and work in His vineyard.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!
St. Charles Borromeo School
Dear Parishioners:
This week our students made Pinwheels for Peace as a follow-up project to the Mass we celebrated recently to commemo-rate the events of September 11, 2001. On each pinwheel, students wrote their prayer for peace and the pinwheels were displayed in the hallways. Learning to become people of peace takes practice just like anything else that needs to be learned. When our society encourages retaliation, a “me first” mentality, and an emphasis on getting ahead at the ex-pense of others, teaching our children to be peaceful is very countercultural. It means helping children understand what it means to be grateful every day and to be content with what they have.
Here is a prayer written by our own Mr. DiGerolamo as part of a meditation that states very beautifully what we hope to accomplish: Pray that God’s love will make you a powerful person of peace who chooses to build a world of love and justice, where people are friends instead of enemies.
And please continue to include us all in your prayers!
God bless, Mrs. Ann Hoffman

We need new ideas and help to make this just as fun and successful. Being a part of the committee doesn’t mean you can’t play! Next meeting is Tuesday, October 4th at 7pm in the St. Charles Room. We want the whole Borromeo community to partake in this fun event! Contact: Tammy Buehler [email protected] or 314-691-1774.
Dear Parishioners:
Our Anglo and Latino religion classes are underway and we have more than 200 students enrolled in K through Confirma-tion. Last Sunday, we had even more students enroll! If you have not enrolled your child/ren in our Sunday a.m. classes, please do so today! We have already met four times and we do not want your child left behind.
Keep in mind, students must attend one full year of structured classes prior to celebrating the Sacraments of First Recon-ciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.
There will be no PSR or Children’s Liturgy classes next Sunday, October 2 so that all families can enjoy our annual Parish Picnic. Parents are expected to volunteer for one shift at the picnic, Saturday evening or sometime during the day Sunday. If you have not already volunteered, please do so this weekend and through the parish website.
Parents of First Reconciliation Students!! Reminder! The First Reconciliation Parent Meetings are Sunday, October 9 at 9:45 a.m. and Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Borromeo Café.
Two meetings provide the opportunity for each parent to each attend one meeting. Questions? Please con-tact your child’s teacher.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 25, 2011
Please join fellow parishioners in praying the Rosary on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm at the Shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Everyone is welcome to pray with us!
Getting Ready for the New Roman Missal Beginning November 26/27 A time for renewed attendance and participation and love for our Mass
The following timetable will be used at our parish to prepare for the changes beginning Advent 2011:
September 25: The Essential Role of the Assembly: All of us are called to full, active, conscious partici-pation in the Mass (not just to watch the actors in a show)
October 2: Worshipping with Body, Mind, Soul, Music, Voice and Silence: Why we greet, genuflect, bow, kneel, stand, sit and shake hands, etc.
October 9: The Introductory Rites: Penitential Rite and Gloria (which will be practiced at the end of the homily and will be used every time the Gloria is sung from then on)
October 16: The Liturgy of the Word: Listening to God’s voice in the sacred Scriptures and the following silence, and our response in the Creed and General Intercessions
October 23: The Liturgy of the Eucharist: Offering and Preparation of our Gifts, Preface and Holy, Holy (which will be practiced after homily and used from then on)
October 30: The Eucharistic Prayer(s): Participating in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ’s dying, rising and return in the Epiclesis, Consecration, Anamnesis, Acclamation, and Great Amen.
November 6: Preparing for Holy Communion: The Lord’s Prayer, Sign of Peace, Lamb of God, “Lord, I am not worthy . . . “ (these sung parts will be practiced again after homily and used then on)
November 13: Holy Communion: Transubstantiation into the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
November 20: The Concluding Rite: Sent out to live the Mass as the Body of Christ.
RCIA: A Journey in Faith RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a journey of faith by which adults who are not Catholics are welcomed into the Christian Family in the Catholic Church.
WHO IS IT FOR? All are welcome to join in the Journey of Faith. Many ordinary parishioners find the sessions helpful to develop their knowledge of their faith and their understanding of its traditions.
Perhaps you are married to a Cahtolic and wish to find out more about your spouse’s faith. Perhaps you are already a Catholic and wish to grow more in your faith. Or perhaps you aren’t Catholic but have thought about becoming a Catholic. The RCIA Journey in Faith is for all of you!
Becoming a Catholic isnot just a matter of learning and accepting a number of beliefs. It is a process of growth and con-versation. This is why it is called a “Journey in Faith.” It involves personal growth, as well as growing into a particular Catholic community or parish. For this reason each parish in the Catholic Church is responsible for its own RCIA process.
RCIA evenings are open to all who wish to find out more about becoming a Catholic, regardless of the desire to be bap-tized or confirmed at the end of the process.
SPONSORS Those who want to enquire more seriously into becoming a Catholic will need a sponsor, who will pray for and support the enquirer in the journey in faith. The sponsor is meant to be a fellow pilgrim on the journey, and must be a Catholic. The sponsor may be a spouse or friend. However, if the enquirer does not know anyone suitable, the parish will be happy to suggest someone.
Sessions are on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8:30pm in the school. For information please contact Becca McCullough at 946-2916.

P. Donaldo

Let us pray: for women who have had abortions, that the pain in their hearts will lead them to sacramental Reconciliation and healing through Project Rachel minis-try.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PLEASE HELP! I still need 15 more people to cover the time slots for the Plinko Booth and the Crazy Hat Booth. Those are the Pro Life Booths. Have openings for both Saturday and Sunday, 2 hour shifts. Sandy B 636-947-3421.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A World for Life The 35th Annual Respect ProLife Convention is October 23 at the St. Charles Convention Center from 9am to 4:30pm. Right in town! All the booths and workshops are free to attend. It is $35 to attend the 11:30 lunch and hear the keynote speaker, Immaculée Ilibagiza, the author of “Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust.” If you would like to be part of a table of ten, call me before October 10. After that the price goes up. Sandy B 636-947-3421.
DID YOU KNOW?
That the St. Louis area is one of 291 cities around the world participating in a prayer vigil for those who enter the abor-tion facilities. Over just the last four years, 4,313 lives have been reported as spared from abortion, and those are just the ones we know about. “40 Days for Life Fall Campaign” is from September 28th thru November 6. The focus is Prayer, Fasting and Witness. St. Charles Borromeo will show our care by committing to just one day and that day is October 29 from 7am to 7pm. We will be sharing that day with Incarnate Word Parish. Are YOU willing to give 2 hours in prayer to help save the lives of an unborn child? You can make a difference! How about some men and women CRHPers get-ting a van of 4-5 people. How about a sports team going before or after a game? How about teens for life going as a group? How about people that party together gather in prayer for a couple of hours? Call one of the following numbers for more info: Mary Kutchback 636-946-9758, Mary Baumann 636-940-9128, Sandy Boschert 636-947-3421.
You can go any day of the week, any time. Visit www.40daysforlife.com/stlouis and sign up, or just show up at Planned Parenthood, 4251 Forest Park Ave., St. Louis, MO 63108. Please let me know if you go, so I can document that you are representing Borromeo.
If you are homebound, you can also help by fasting and praying during the same 8 hour period. Please let me know so I can tell those going who is praying for them and the unborn child. Also, pray for good weather for that day!
