Strong clubs like tall buildings need a solid foundation to withstand the tests oftime. The Las Vegas Ski and Sports Club has built that strong foundation year afteryear and so, here we are. Each year we are building on the previous year and thegood work by past boards and officers (thank you) have given us not just thatfoundation but the essential building blocks we need to sustain and be successful.I wanted to take a moment to look at where we are and how each of us can helpthis club move ahead.

Successful meetings and TGIF’S are the catalyst of getting skiers, snowboarders, hikers, golfers, cruisers, tennis players and everyone else that enjoys the cama-raderie and feeling of family together. As a group we are strong. We travel together, play together, and generally just figure things out together. Are we tight? I’d say so.All of you attending and organizing our monthly meetings are part of one of our es-sential building blocks.

Volunteering is another essential building block for our club. From roadside cleanup to the Board of Directors, volunteers are vital. Our BOD is essential to keepingthe club on track and legal. Any one who feels they can contribute and wishes tobe part of our board is welcome. Whether your strength is Fundraising, Trip andTravel, or Events coordination, we want you!

Snow and skiing is another key to our success. We all wait for those first snowsthat fall in the high country. When they do, our Ski trips start to fill up. We needthose trips to fill up early as we have many deadlines for deposits. Already twotrips will be cancelled this year. Aspen and Lake Tahoe have fallen to lack of com-mitted sign ups. Please, if you know that you are interested in a ski trip, getsigned up early and call a fellow club member or ski buddy and get them to signup as well. Help us to fill up the trips.

Club membership dues and fundraising is the last building block we’ll talk abouttoday. If you are reading this article and have not paid your 2011 dues, pleaseprint out the application fill it out and send it in with your check. We as a club de-pend on that money to pay bills (insurance and administration costs) and stay sol-vent. We are doing well thanks to the expertise of our treasurer (thank you Mike)but we would appreciate your help in getting paid up as early as possible. Wehave started some fundraising activities and that have had an excellent responseby our club members.

We are doing well and I want to take this time to thank all of you for your past cur-rent and future efforts in making the Las Vegas Ski and Sports club successful. Youthe members are the key and we have worked together to create the buildingblocks to success for our club.

Thanks Ron for your vision! From the President: Diane

Building Blocks to Success

This is a rerun of a powerful message written in2010 by previous President Ron Williams. I

could not say it better myself. the more thingschange, the more they stay the same.

For those going to Telluride in January:

About TellurideTelluride HistoryFounded in 1878, Telluride’s history is as colorful as the Victorian homeslining the streets. Originally named Columbia, the fledgling town wasforced to change its name in 1887 due to post office confusion withColumbia, California. From 1887 on, Telluride began to earn its place onthe map as a budding mining town.

Most say Telluride is named after tellurium, a nonmetallic elementassociated with rich mineral deposits of gold and silver. Others say itoriginated from the castaway call "To-Hell-You-Ride" shouted by lovedones who knew of the town's boisterousness. Either way, folks wereattracted to the young town full of promise and opportunity.

At the height of the gold rush, nearly 5,000 people inhabited Telluride, referred to as the "town without a bellyache."

In fact, at the turn of the century, more millionaires (per capita) lived inTelluride than in New York City. The Tomboy Mine was one of the world'sgreatest gold producers and contributed to more than $360 milliondollars of gold pulled out of the area.

The wealth of Telluride attracted the likes of Butch Cassidy, who beganhis illustrious bank robbing career in town. In 1889, Butch walked awayfrom his first heist at the San Miguel Valley Bank with $24,580, neverto be recovered.

All good things came to an end when Telluride's boom days startedmoving toward bust. The final blow came when many of the area's minesshut down in 1953. Families left town in droves and those who stayedrealized Telluride's heyday was a thing of the past. After the 1950’s miningbust, Telluride faded into a sleepy ghost town.

Snow--once despised by the miners, falls in glorious abundance on thetops of mountains and covers the ski trails. It also put Telluride back onthe map. The Scandinavian sport of skiing was introduced to Telluride bySwedes and Finns, maybe for the sheer joy, but more for the quick meansof transportation.

Nearly 40 years later, Joe Zoline, a wealthy entrepreneur from BeverlyHills, envisioned how snow could transform Telluride. His dream ofbuilding a ski area came to fruition in 1972 when the Telluride Ski Resortopened with five lifts and a day lodge. Six years later, two Coloradonatives, Ron Allred and Jim Wells, purchased the ski area and transformedTelluride into a world class resort through mountain upgrades, development of Mountain Village (in 1985), and the creation ofinnovative public transportation systems – the gondola and chondola. In2004, Chuck Horning and partners purchased the resort and have sincefacilitated the expansion into Black Iron Bowl, Palmyra Peak, the Gold HillChutes and Revelation Bowl.

Mountain Village, ColoradoPerched at 9,500 feet, Mountain Village is an intimate alpine enclavewithluxury hotels and condominiums, stylish boutiques andinnovative dining. Home to the state-of-the-art Telluride ConferenceCenter, and world renowned hotels including The Peaks Resort, Lumiereand Hotel Madeline, this European-styled alpine village providesunsurpassed scenic ambiance with an emphasis on guest service. Allelements combine to create a modern alpine European elegance tocomplement the rustic charm of Telluride.

Today, the population teeters around 2,500 in the town of Telluride and1,400 year round in Mountain Village. Skis, boots and snowboards havereplaced the pick, shovel and hammer. Few predicted the incredibleimpact snow would have on this once sleepy town as Telluride is again thedesirable, energetic community of a century ago. Mention Telluride andthose who know this authentic mountain gem grin in appreciation of itssheer beauty and charm.

Today in Telluride and Mountain VillageVictorian architecture and colorful storefronts distinguish Telluride's MainStreet, while European alpine elegance surrounds the Mountain Villagecore. Food aficionados delight in the innovation and quality of food inthis small resort, boasting over 60 restaurants, coffee shops and bars .New approaches in American cuisine, wine cellars to rival those found oneither coast and tasting menus prepared by seasoned chefs create theperfect atmosphere to match any mood.

Statue of Jesus Allowed toRemain at Whitefish. In late August, a three-Justice panel of the 9thCircuit Court of Appeals ruled that a statue ofJesus on National Forest Land at WhitefishMountain Resort can stay. The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation(FFRF) had filed the lawsuit against the U.S.Forest Service, and the Knights of Columbus, aCatholic organization that had erected themonument in 1954 as a tribute to U.S. soldierswho died in World War II, demanding that thestatue alongside the ski slopes of WhitefishMountain be removed.
