Inaugural Neuroscience Symposium

The Inaugural Neuroscience Symposium is an interprofessional activity designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, EMS and residents in the following specialties: neurology, neurosurgery, trauma, emergency medicine, critical care, hospitalists, geriatric medicine, physical medicine, general practice, internal medicine and rehabilitation. In addition, pharmacists, physical therapists, health professional students and allied health professionals who care for neurology patients are welcome to attend.

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

At the Nexus of Surgery and Medicine: The Latest Advances in Epilepsy Treatment

• Describe the burden epilepsy places on patients and populations

• Identify the latest techniques in the management and treatment of epilepsy

• Discuss the multidisciplinary nature of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment

Cutting Edge Neurotrauma

• Discuss current treatment standards and key research developments in severe traumatic brain and spinal cord injury

• Review fundamental tenets of neurotrauma

• Explain the new SIBICC algorithm for the management of severe traumatic brain injury patients

Biomechanics of Spinal Deformity and Motion

• Reduce the number of revision spinal surgeries through better understanding of biomechanics

• Identify the biomechanical factors associated with spinal construct and instrumentation failure

• Develop a strategy to implement spinal biomechanics to patient surgical planning

Neurosurgery 2.0: Trends and Strategies for the Road Ahead

• Identify trends in clinical and translational neuroscience research

• Discuss strategies for participating and capitalizing on these trends

Prehospital Stroke Care Integration for Best Outcomes

• Describe the role of 9-1-1 dispatch in acute stroke recognition

• Review current evidence for large vessel occlusion stroke screening tools

• Discuss the evidence and guidelines for stroke system triage and patient destination

• Describe examples of stroke quality improvement activities in an EMS system

• Explain the role of EMS in the multidisciplinary approach to stroke care

Mobile Stroke Units

• Describe how to design and execute clinical research in the preclinical setting

• Discuss how to integrate prehospital treatment of acute stroke patients into your practice

• Explain how to build and implement a Mobile Stroke Unit

Prevention and Treatment of Ischemic Stroke: Where We Currently Stand

• Improve ischemic stroke patient care through interprofessional collaboration between physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners

• Formulate treatment planning through interprofessional collaboration between paramedics, emergency room and stroke team

• Identify how each role influences timing and success of ischemic stroke treatment

Current Strategies for Maximum Safe Resection of Brain Tumors

• Identify the rationale for maximum safe resection of brain tumors

• Identify current and future techniques for resection of tumors

• Discuss the role of preoperative, perioperative and postoperative team members in obtaining maximal resection of a tumor
