We feel March this year came in like a Lion – what do you think?

Come to think of it, most of February was very lion-like!!

WHAT IS “SHROVE TUESDAY” AND WHY ARE PANCAKES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS?

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent in the Roman Catholic Church (and those Protestant churches that observe Lent). Since Ash Wednesday always falls 46 days before Easter Sunday, Shrove Tuesday falls on the 47th day before Easter.

Shrove, derived from shrive, refers to the confession of sins as a preparation for Lent, a usual practice in Europe in the Middle Ages. Although the day is sometimes still used for self-examination and introspection, Shrove Tuesday eventually acquired the character of a carnival or festival in many places and is often celebrated with parades. As the final day before the austerity of the Lenten fast, Shrove Tuesday also has many customs pertaining to food.

Pancakes are traditional in a number of European countries because eggs, sugar, and fat, commonly forbidden during the Lenten fast, are used up so they will not go to waste; the day is known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday in Ireland and in many Commonwealth countries.

A GIFT OF KINDNESS

Jolted by the crash of falling merchandise in a small gift shop, I turned to see a very embarrassed woman apologising profusely to an elderly saleslady for upsetting a display of plastic tumblers. The saleslady reassured her, saying, “We place the display in the aisle to show the durability of the tumblers. We expect customers to upset them.” Relieved, the woman left. “Is that the real reason?” I asked. “No,” admitted the saleslady, “but I know how she felt. I broke an expensive glass item in a store once. The manager refused payment – and I promised myself to pass on his kindness.”

QUESTIONS, WE HAVE QUESTIONS … - If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea…does that mean that one out of five enjoys it? - Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren’t they just stale bread to begin with? - If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? - If its true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for? - What hair colour do they put on the driver’s license of bald men? - Is it true that you never really learn to swear until you learn to drive? - Whatever happened to Preparations A through G? - Why, why, why do we press harder on the remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak? - Why do banks charge a fee due to insufficient funds when they already know you are broke? - Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? - Why is it that when someone tells you that there are one billion stars in the universe you believe them,

but if they tell you there is wet paint you have to touch it to check?

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

And our next “wish” is to have a winning team – “Eh, what’s you talking about Samson?” Of course, we’re referring to FOOTBALL – and the Riders in the 2020 Grey Cup! We were fortunate enough to win the year and location, now we only ask to have our team in it. We can see it all now – SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS WIN 2020 GREY CUP ON THEIR 110TH ANNIVERSARY!

With our fair province having only hosted this event three times before, it was definitely our turn – 1995, 2003, 2013. Even though “a small inner voice” kept saying Hamilton will get it, “a dream with a reward” has come true – our bid/offer took precedence – and Hamilton gets it for 2021! Seemingly, the “powers-to-be” knows who can throw a good party – and with the new Mosaic stadium, six more new hotels for accommodation and all the other new additions since 2013 how can it not be a success – oh, right – we need the winning team!

And so the weather has to take a “back-burner” for this week – but there is some improvement and that’s good! With only 19 days ‘til spring – where are we going – BETTER! Some of our resident “old timers” tell us that they can’t recall such a cold February – without a break. Bad news – just hearing that forecasters are saying that we can expect March to come in like a “Frosty Lion” – why can’t they be wrong?

As local hockey winds down for another season, curling fans are eagerly watching playoff competition. The Saskatchewan reps in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts fought hard to be in the final, however it was not meant to be – and Alberta met their match against Ontario to capture the title. Next year’s Scotties will be in Moose Jaw. The Men’s Brier will be the next big curing event in Brandon March 2 – 10.

Telemiracle 43 is happening this weekend. In 2018, $7,151,256 was raised – the most ever since its first year of 1977. In 1992, over $2 million was considered a huge success. Keep in mind that Telemiracle had a huge input in allowing our community to be able to purchase Handivans over the years.

Be back in March – weather permitting!!

Abe, newly retired, was helping several children on the street to adjust their skates. Some fell and he soothed them and helped them to their feet. He even explained how to turn on their skates and how to stop.

The next day, the children rapped on the door of Abe’s house. When his wife appeared, one little boy said, “Can your son come out and play with us again?”

A man and his wife stopped in front of a store window bearing the sign: “Buy Now. Pay Later.” He turned to her and said, “Now that’s what I call salesmanship. They give us both something to do.”

An elderly gentleman addicted to riotous night life was told by his physician that one more binge would finish him. Disgruntled with such advice, he told his wife, “Let’s go out on the town tonight, dance up a storm and act like the first time we were married, OK? “OK?” she replied, Tthat may be OK with you since you won’t have to get up in the morning.

OUR 5TH ANNIVERSARY

Little dresses for 5 years, hard to believe! It’s been a good 5 years. We have sewn 6,293 dresses and 2,270 shorts.

They have been hand delivered to Haiti, Dominican, Jamaica, Mexico, Belize, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Peru, Liberia, Uganda, South Africa (Equatorial Guinea (Troy)) Malawi, fires in the North, and shoeboxes.

When we see pictures of the smiling children receiving these, we know it is all worthwhile. We have never paid for shipping. Our materials have all been donated. We do buy elastic and broadcloth, as we make our own seam binding.

We work Tuesday afternoon in the Cannington Wing of the Free Methodist Church, free for our use. Thanks. Thanks to all the ladies who so enthusiastically come every week. Anyone wanting to help, we can use you.

We are truly blessed. - Suzanne Eisler

ALONG THE FLYERS’ BLUE LINE

Game #4 pf the best-of-five series against the Redvers Rockets was played on the 21st at the Forum. The good fortune of game #2 wasn’t to repeat its presence that night – the Rockets went home with a 6-3 win – and the series, 3 out of 5. Good luck to the Rockets in their next round – and in their SHA playoffs.

50/50 winner was Ray Fenwick from Carlyle collecting $550 (Rococo Construction had guaranteed $400).

The Flyers travelled to Craik on the 23rd for game #1 of a two-game total point series in SHA Division D Provincial Playoffs – results Craik 10 Flyers 2. Game #2 is scheduled for March 2nd.

CURLING TALK This curling thing, she is one strange game; My skip yell out so loud “hit that broom!” But I just give it one little twist, People think I’m queer if hit with fist. Then she tell me just wick and roll, By golly, this woman think I’m fool; I’m no dumb dog to learn new tricks, I bet next she say “go pick up sticks!” Now I hear her shout “hurry, tap it up” But no one tell me to bring a cup And where’s this keg they’re going to tap! Well if we’re all invited, I’ll drink to that. And someone starts to scream and shout “Sweep that rock, take ‘er out!” Well I say, if I want to sweep with broom I’ll get my coat and head for home.

Now she say “you better put up a guard,” I tell her I’ve been trying awful hard But I didn’t come here to quarrel and fight, Then she lost her temper – oh what a sight! I know this skip she is my boss But why she want a rock in house? I guess this thing we throw is kind of rock; Maybe some day I learn this curling talk. And now she holler out real loud To all those people in watching crowd, “Look, we finally got that raise!” Hey this game she not so bad, I didn’t know that we got paid!

Fred: I was in the Post Office today and saw a notice that read: “Man wanted for Robbery in Texas”. Ted: Too bad, it’s not closer – I could use the work.
