CHIP SEAL/FOG SEAL PROJECT TO BEGIN Weather permitting, a chip seal/fog seal project will begin Monday on US‑6, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads. Chip seal is an application of emulsified oil to the roadway surface followed by an application of aggregate. State maintenance forces will be doing the chip seal on US-6 from Arapahoe to Cambridge. The work is an-ticipated to take approximately 10 days. Traffic will be maintained using flaggers and a pilot vehicle. Motorists should expect to see de-lays and are reminded to drive cautiously through highway work zones. Weather permitting, asphalt resurfacing work is scheduled to begin Monday on N-18, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads. State maintenance crews will be resurfacing 1.5 miles of road-way on N-18, east of Stockville. This project is anticipated to be com-pleted in five days. The Nebraska Department of Roads’ contact is Kerry Scott of McCook. Motorists are asked to drive cautiously through construction zones.

LEGISLATION REMAINS IN PROGRESS Congressman Adrian Smith insists healthcare legislation remains in process with much work to do before agreement is reached on a final bill. Senate Republicans have released the outline of their proposed replacement of the Affordable Care Act. Smith, a Republican, says if discussions between the Senate and the House remain on point pro-gress can be made. “We need to keep the focus on affordable access for everyone, certainly including those with pre-existing conditions,” Smith tells Nebraska reporters during a conference call. Smith declines to give an assessment of the Senate measure and says he hopes Sen-ate and House negotiators can work out a measure which can pass Congress. He says he and his staff are reading the Senate pro-posal. Still, Smith leaves no doubt that he favors the repeal and re-placement of the Affordable Care Act signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010. “We were elected and re-elected recently to repeal Obamacare and Obamacare was passed with a group of tax increases that I think have been economically punitive,” according to Smith. Smith says the make-up of the ACA has made its replacement part of the discussion on tax reform.

NEBRASKA FARMERS CAN GET FUNDING Nebraska farmers who need help controlling erosion can get funding through the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Brad Soncksen, the agency’s assistant state conservationist for programs, says EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) dollars can be used to in-stall farming practices that control ephemeral gullies. Those are small ditches that stem from concentrated flow on fields. Soncksen says, “We are able to use some of our funding that we get through EQIP to assist those producers who want to install practices such as waterways or even use some cover crops or no-till contour farming, buffer strips and those kinds of practices.”Interested producers should apply at their county NRCS office as the apps go through a ranking process to deter-mine which projects get funded.“We set aside $150,000 for the state for this and once we get applications in, we’ll assess that and see if there’s a possibility to add more,” Soncksen says. “We want to help as many producers as we can.”Soncksen says the goal is to get the up-grades or repairs in place within a year once a project is green-lighted.

SPORTS Rematch Friday is set at the College World Series. TCU beat Louisville

4-3 Thursday night to earn another meeting with Florida, the top team

in Bracket 2, on Friday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN). The Gators defeated TCU 3-0

in the opening round on Sunday. And in the early game Friday (3 p.m.

ET, ESPN), Oregon State, top-ranked nationally and unbeaten in Bracket

1, faces LSU four days after the Beavers' 13-1 beat down of the six-

time national champion Tigers. What's important is this: If TCU or LSU

win on Friday, there's baseball to be played Saturday at TD Ameri-

trade Park. If Florida and Oregon State take care of business, it's on to

the best-of-three championship series Monday night. The odds favor

the Gators and Beavers. Since the CWS adopted a two-bracket system

in 1988, 42 of the 58 teams to start with two wins have advanced to

play for the championship. Florida and Oregon State show no signs of

slowing down. This is, after all, the year of the favorites in Omaha.

Higher-seeded teams have won all 10 games at the CWS, an unprece-

dented run. Just be careful how you deliver the news to TCU and LSU

players that they face a long climb, statistically and by way of the eye

test.

True freshman wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson Jr. will not be a part

of the Husker football program this fall. Johnson Jr. will be taking a

leave of absence from the team right now, but the door is open for his

return next January assuming he has taken care of a few require-

ments prior to that time. Keyshawn Johnson Sr. released a statement

on Tuesday night, announcing that he was heavily involved with the

decision along with head coach Mike Riley and fully supportive of this

move and the Nebraska football program. Johnson Jr., who was rated

as a four-star prospect out of Calabasas, Calif., was a big part of Ne-

braska’s 2017 recruiting class. He enrolled in school early but had

been slowed in the spring due to issues involving appendicitis. The 6-

foot-1, 195-pounder did however play in the spring game.
