FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Parents and Members of the School Community

Welcome back to Term 4, which is always very busy and challenging as the year rapidly comes to an end.

HSC EXAMS AND GRAD

The HSC exams have started successfully for our Year 12 students with nearly two weeks already

completed. These exams will continue for another three weeks, finishing on the 9th November. The

completion of 13 years of schooling will then be celebrated on the 16th November with the Year 12

Graduation at the Orange Function Centre. Year 12 students and their families are reminded that tickets

are available from the Front Office and cost $80 each.

2019 HSC COMMENCEMENT

Year 11 students have now commenced the HSC course in all their subjects. Assessment books for the

HSC year have been issued to all students. If your student has not received theirs, please contact the Year

Adviser, Josh Conliffe. This book contains all the information related to assessment tasks for the next 12

months. The Senior Study Sessions are also continuing this term, each Thursday afternoon in the FOCUS

Room in C Block from 3:30-5:00pm, giving students a space to study and complete assessment tasks with

teacher assistance.

NAIDOC WEEK

Next week will see NAIDOC Week celebrated in Orange. Our students will be involved in a wide range of

activities, including the NAIDOC March, the NAIROC Eisteddfod, and Orange Aboriginal Medical Centre

Open Day. The school will also host an Indigenous Sports Day attracting schools from across Western

Region to Orange for a day of friendly competition. The school will also mark NAIDOC Week with an out

of uniform day on Friday 2nd November, with students encouraged to dress in black, red and yellow.

YEAR 7 2019

It was great to see such a great turn out at our first Year 6-7 Transition activity earlier this week. The

students had the opportunity to be involved in mini lessons to experience what high school will be like. A

Parent Information Evening will be held on Wednesday 31st October. Students and their families will be

given the opportunity to hear what high school will be like, get information about uniform and BYOD

requirements and also to have any questions answered. Year 6 students will also take part in further

transition activities between now and the end of the year.

JUNIOR EXAMS

Junior exams will commence in Week 6 (Monday 19th November). A timetable will be issued to students in

the near future, but it should be noted that not all subjects will have formal exams in the Hall. Some may

choose to have tests during class time as their final formal assessment, whilst other subjects may have long

term assessment tasks. If you have any questions please get in touch with your child’s Year Adviser.

HSC MINIMUM STANDARD

For students who sit their HSC from 2020 onwards there will be a new minimum standard that will need to

be met to achieve an HSC. For students currently in Year 10 their first opportunity to do this was in 2017

when they sat NAPLAN. If they achieved a Band 8 or above in reading, writing or numeracy they are

recognised as having met the minimum standard. If this was not the case they have to complete an

online test to achieve this minimum standard. Students will have multiple opportunities to do this, with the

first one occurring before the end of this term. Further information will be sent home in the coming weeks.

I hope you have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with again in Week 4

With my warmest regards

Kate Wootten

Big Picture Help Launch The Dream Peddler

The Dream Peddler, an important book written by

Irena Kobald, about obsession and addiction, was

launched at the Orange Regional Art Gallery, on

Saturday 13th October.

In Term 3, under the mentorship of Margrete

Lamond from Dirt Lane Press, Big Picture students

Felicity Van Doorn and Jaime Macdouall, created

sophisticated and thought provoking poetry,

watercolour paintings and photographic pieces,

inspired by aspects of the story and images

portrayed in the book. These works were then

professionally displayed in the gallery as the backdrop and a discussion point during the

book’s launch.

The exhibition was part of a Personal Interest Project that Felicity

and Jaime did as part of their individualised learning plan in the

Big Picture Academy. Not only did they develop their ability to

express ideas and feelings through words and images, but

through their mentorship with Margrete and the publishing

house, they learnt about elements of design, book and art

creation, editing mark ups and general editing and publication

principles.

Felicity and Jaime were presented with autographed copies of the book and met the author,

illustrator and publishers to discuss the messages portrayed in the book as well as their own

pieces.

The launch was attended by a large group of community members who engaged with the

girls and praised them on their insightful pieces.

The whole project experience was extremely valuable for both Felicity and Jaime who are

talented artists and wordsmiths and will draw on this experience with confidence as they

continue to create, publish and exhibit projects into the future.

On Thursday the 27th of September, our dance and music students performed in the

Canobolas concert! Dancers from sport groups and elective classes performed a variety of

routines along with some choir and music items.

We had over 100 students come from Glenroi Public School to watch the 1pm show, as well

as some of our own students. The evening show was exciting as many family, friends, and

Canobolas staff came along to see everything we’ve worked on so far this year.

After a busy term of eisteddfods and the concert, Miss Lee is very proud of how much the

students have improved in their dancing abilities and in their confidence on stage. Great

work to all the students who performed at the concert and thank you to all of the people who

have helped support the students in the eisteddfods and at the concert.

STEM CENTRE NEWS Adam Spencer at CSU

Canobolas High students were among

the 200 students from the Central West

and beyond who spent time with ABC

presenter, and self-confessed maths

nerd, Adam Spencer, at CSU

Engineering Bathurst campus last week.

Mr Spencer is a Maths and Science

ambassador for the University of Sydney

who had the room captivated by the

way he applied mathematics and

taught the students how to flex their

brains when solving maths problems.

Spencer Digital Farmhand program launch

The NSW Minister for Primary Industries,

Niall Blair was at our school last week for

the launch of the University of Sydney

Digital Farmhand STEM Pilot program.

Canobolas High is one of three NSW

schools chosen to help develop this

program before going to a larger scale

across NSW next year.

The Digital Farmhand can be coded to

measure the height of plants, then

selectively apply liquid fertilizer or

herbicide. An optical sensor can then be

used to ‘see’ healthy or sick plants, then

only apply what is needed for the

individual plants.
