Remember that the thing you’re spotting is in the shop window – don’t go into the shop and ask the person be-hind the counter what the ‘stranger’ is. Please respect

Recycling and Rubbish Clearance at Evening Events
We aim to recycle as much as possible during Carnival. Please help by not bringing glass to the
evening events but if you do, please take it home and put it in your recycling bin.
We thank you for any help you give us clearing the venues of rubbish at the end of the night.
We love to get a few zzzzz’s in before we start again the next day.
If you need a bin bag for your rubbish, please collect one from the Carnival Merchandise Tent
At many events our Carnival merchandise gazebo will be there, selling wristbands, mugs, lots of
‘flash and glow’, hats, leis, hair garlands, blow-up guitars, monkeys, flamingos, lollypops etc and
other exciting items. Also Carnival reusable cups, pens,fridge magnets. These make great gifts or mementos and are all sold at reasonable prices.

Carnival Exhibition “THUNDERBOLTS and FIRE” Saturday 27 July – Sunday 11 August
10am – 5pm Historic photos and newly discovered documents
reveal how the fire destroyed the church on 3 August 1879 and how Wells rallied to rebuild it.
Also see parish registers rescued from the fire. The record of life events in Wells for over 450

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Wells Carnival. The com-mittee hopes you enjoy the week and all the different events lined up for you. Our events are aimed at all ages and tastes so we hope you will find many to go to. Watching the events is great fun but it’s so much more fun to join in. This may be your first carnival or you may have been en-joying it for many, many years. We hope you have a lovely time and take away lots of fantastic memories.
The committee is under a bit of pressure as earlier in the year we won Family Event of the Year in The Norfolk & Suffolk Tourism Awards. This award was given to the committee but it belongs to the town and all the people that attended the events at last year’s Carnival. So, well done to the town and to you. Also, a big well done to the com-mittee, a fitting reward for its hard work.
The Carnival Committee, whose members are all volunteers, meets regularly to organise the events and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Committee for their time and effort throughout the year. I would also like to thank their families for being so understanding about the time this has taken and for giving us their support.
Carnival week is full of amazing evening events and at each of these the committee will be organising bucket collections and raffles to help towards our costs. Most events have sponsorship but there is always a considerable shortfall when putting on a week-long carnival. The com-mittee has been active throughout the year raising additional funds at local events. If you see us at an event during Carnival, please pop some money in the buckets, visit the merchandising gazebo or donate online at www.wellscarnival.co.uk
All the money collected on Carnival Day during the parade will be donated to Wells-based local charities and good causes at our AGM. Please give generously whenever you see a pink polo shirt or bucket. Raffles will be held most nights with great prizes donated by local busi-nesses. Please support us so that we can keep bringing you great enter-tainment.
I would like to personally thank all the local businesses, groups, or-ganisations and individuals for their continued support, without which the Committee would not be able to put on Carnival Week. There are two pages of ‘Thanks’ at the end of this programme (pages 68 and 69) and
we appreciate everyone who has given time, money, help and support. If we’ve missed anyone off we are sincerely sorry – we couldn’t do it without you! Please support the businesses and groups during the week as a thank you for their generosity. They are all part of our amazing community.
The committee is very fortunate to have the continued support of the Holkham Estate. The estate sponsors various events and donates the net profit from the Freeman Street car park during Carnival week to us. The overflow car park will be open every day with access from the Freeman Street car park. There are enough parking spaces for everyone. Please follow the NEW signs to the Freeman Street car park and check local notices for opening times. Holkham supports us, so please support them and use the car parks. This also helps to ease congestion in the town. Don’t ride around the town wasting fuel, just follow the signs and park up.
Some of our events require tickets: these can be bought online or from The Maltings through its ticketing system. A big thank you for their support.
This year we are delighted to have Kelly White as Carnival Queen. As in recent years, the Lifeboat Crew has kindly sponsored the Carnival Queen and a member of the crew will be crowning Kelly on Sunday 28 July.
Please note, if you are entering the classes for fancy dress or powered vehicles on Carnival Day, there have been some changes. Please see page 64 for details.
Teams are still needed for the Tug of War and Raft Race, also entries for the Duck Race in the harbour. Please get quacking if you wish to take part.

with local residents and supporters on Wells Quay for the 59th annual lifeboat service. Both lifeboats
launch and run up to the quayside for a short service with hymns and readings. The lifeboats
are joined by a flotilla of local small boats which anchor in the channel to take part and Fakenham

As you visit the shops in town, you’ll find that many of them have a numbered star in the window. If you look carefully in each num-bered shop window you’ll find something strange that you wouldn’t normally expect to be there. You’ve spotted a ‘stranger’! To enter the competition, write the name of this strange item opposite the shop’s number on the form below.
When you have completed the form, fill in
your name and address, carefully tear out the page (don’t destroy your programme!) and hand it in to The Maltings Information Centre in Staithe Street by 5pm on Friday 2 August. The winner will be drawn and the results announced on Carnival Day.

Wells Carnival Procession is, as always, open to all! We’d be delighted if you’d like to join in and it would be wonderful to see new faces taking part. To enter the Parade – please note the arrangements for Classes 1 – 7 Powered vehicles should arrive on The Buttlands by 1pm. You will be met by a committee member and given an entry card which will show the class en-tered. This should be displayed prominently (ideally in the front of the vehicle). Judging will commence at 1.30pm
Entries for classes 1 – 7, please be ready to be called into the main arena from 2pm. One class per entry, please. Each class will be asked to parade in the arena where they will be judged and prizes awarded.
You will then be asked to leave the arena so we can continue judging other classes. (Parents may wish to accompany children in the arena).
Please contact a committee member well in advance if you have any queries or would like to enter a particularly large float or group of people.

The Bill Sibley Shield will be presented to the best entry from classes 5 to 7 plus an extra cash prize of £25 The Nigel Parr Trophy will be awarded to the best entry in classes 8 to 10
The Brian Ayton Cup will be awarded to the best overall entrant (committee choice) Rosettes will be awarded to all 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Highly Commended entrants.

1 All floats and entries taking part in the Carnival Procession please enter The Buttlands at the Present House entrance by 1pm on Carnival Day (Saturday 3 August)
2 No advertising material, edibles, gifts, samples or other objects may be thrown or otherwise distributed from any vehicular or elevated float. At the sole discretion of the Parade Organiser favours and advertising material may be distributed on foot, providing no risk is thereby in-curred by spectators, particularly children, in relation to moving vehicles, machinery or animals.
3 Entrants are reminded that no liquid of any sort should be squirted over either floats or the public.
4 All float organisers are reminded that motorised vehicles must fully comply with the require-ments of The Road Traffic Act 1988 and they must also hold Public Liability insurance for their float display.
5 The safety of all persons riding on floats is the responsibility of the respective float organiser and driver of the float vehicle. The Wells Carnival Committee cannot be held liable for any acci-dent to any person taking part in the Carnival Parade, unless that accident is the direct result of action by a member of the Wells Carnival Committee or authorised helper, providing such Committee member or helper is on duty at the time the instruction was given.
6 Floats wishing to leave the Carnival Parade en route without returning to The Buttlands must inform the Parade Organiser before their float leaves The Buttlands. Permission will only be given where the police on duty agree that it is feasible without causing danger to the specta-tors.
7 The driver of any vehicle should hold a driving licence in respect of the vehicle used (ie HGV licence for HGV licensed vehicle).
8 Participants are reminded that ONLY Wells Carnival Ltd authorised collection buckets may be used during the parade.
I have read and agreed to abide by the above regulations relating to the Wells Carnival Parade and I will ensure that the float driver is aware of items 4, 5, 6 and 7.

The person in charge of each float must sign above where indicated and hand the page to the Carnival member meeting them on the Buttlands who will then issue an entry number.
