DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - Mark Pascoe

Hi All

We are nearly at the end of term 2 and

I wonder where is the year going

Over the past few weekends the

students have been kept busy with a

trip to Carousel had a taste testing

competition where there were a lot of

laughs had a treasure hunt around the College which looked

like a lot of fun and also town runs etc

Over the term we offered an excursion every weekend but

unfortunately due to the low numbers of students supporting

these we have had to cancel them We hope to get out a bit

more next term

Over the holidays we have two groups using the College

facilities so all students will need to clear out their rooms We

would like students to remove everything from their rooms

they will not be able to store anything in their wardrobe

however they can store belongings in the storeroom

attached to their dorm For those who have to travel a long

distance or catch a plane home we will also provide extra

storage space for them Students who are attending Country

Week will need to be organised the weekend before they go

A couple of reminders regarding leave -

when you mark ldquootherrdquo or ldquoother studentrdquo for the

transport for your child it is important that you name

this person in the notes section

can you please only mark parent in transport if you are

collecting your child and not if someone elsersquos parent

is collecting them

that you or whomever is collecting your child comes to

the window at the duty room and sees a staff member

a reminder to students to make sure they sign out and

see a staff member at the duty room before they leave

the College

Country Week is just around the corner we are all looking

forward to a great week of sports fun and making lasting

memories Organisation for our ball is underway and things

are looking great information and permission letters will be

out soon

Thank you

Heather Rae

RESIDENTIAL MANAGER - Heather Rae

It has been a big couple of weeks and

staff are now busy marking and

reporting for Semester One As a

group the class staff were really

impressed with how the Year 10

cohort approached their first round of

exams here at the College Most

students took a serious and mature approach to their study

accessing after school support and trying a range of study

techniques such as flash cards mind maps summary notes

and practice exam questions For some Year 11 students this

was also their first round of exams and thus a big learning

curve but most students handled it really well

It is an exciting and unsettling time for Year 12 students who

are at the point in the year when they realise that they only

have a short amount of time left here at the College and it

can be difficult to remain focused on study With only one

term left to go please encourage your child to make the most

of that time and focus on completing class work

assessments competencies and so on so that they achieve

the results that best reflect the skills and knowledge gained

over this last term

Our staff are working hard to create a positive learning

environment to help our students do the best they can which

can even include having the opportunity to enjoy some rare

winter sunshine while reading their novels in English or

creating onion slides to view under the microscope in

Science With only two weeks left of this term we are

looking forward to enjoying Wellbeing Day next week and the

host of activities that have been planned to wrap up a busy

term in a fun and positive way

Trades Training Centre

As the majority of us are away for the

next College Chronicle I would like to

take this opportunity to congratulate

the students and Trades staff on a

term of hard work and progress

Term 2 is always a tricky term with

the weather being colder and the days shorter The Trades

Training Centre has been a hive of activity with many great

projects and jobs on the go On reviewing the Year 12rsquos

progress we are looking to have most qualifications

completed by the last days of Term 3 allowing students to

focus on finishing projects and spending time on

uncompleted works outside of the Trades Centre

As Open Day approaches students are working very hard to

have their projects completed to display on the day Once

again we will be running a student competition in Engineering

and Furniture Making for the Peoplersquos Choice Award So

please if you are attending this yearrsquos Open Day on Friday 10th

September drop by and vote for one of the studentrsquos

projects in each area It is a great initiative to get the students

moving and they show great pride in presenting their

creations We look forward to seeing you all then

Country Week

An email was sent out last week to the Parents Carers who

have not sent back their consent forms We encourage you to

look through your emails to give the consent and not risk

your student missing out on such events due to parent carer

consent Phone calls will be made to those parents who have

still not returned the forms

This week students received their Country Week polo shirts

fixtures and rooming allocations Everything looks to be

locked in and we look forward to a very enjoyable last week

of term

If any parents and carers have any questions regarding

Country Week 2021 please do not hesitate to contact myself

at the College

NSHS Vs WACoA Narrogin Sports Day

Last week we played against the Narrogin Senior High

Schoolrsquos Country Week team The students playing sports

were very competitive winning the Hockey and AFL matches

and going down in the other four sports Spectators were

brilliantly well behaved and had an enjoyable afternoon of

watching sport eating sausage sizzles and ice creams It was

great to see the two High Schools of Narrogin participate in

an event that allowed our students to socialise and compete

together

We will look at a similar event next year in the lead up to

Country Week 2022

If yoursquore not sure guess positively

Unhappy people take a situation in

which they are not sure and come to a

negative conclusion For example if they

arenrsquot certain why another person is

being nice they may assume that the

person must have a hidden agenda

Happy people take that same situation and guess the positive

possibility that is that the person is really nice

Henry is a seventy-year-old man who always had a good word

for his neighbours He lived modestly in a small home in the

country with only a wood stove for heat Over the years

Henry watched his home deteriorate steadily but he was too

old and had too little money to fix it up One of his

neighbours organised a group to virtually rebuild Henryrsquos

house giving it modern heat and plumbing Henry was

stunned by this Why were all these people taking such an

interest in him in his house Were they trying to change his

house so that it would make their houses worth more

Any situation can be viewed as an act of selfishness if thatrsquos

how you want to view it Taking this perspective makes us

cold critical and cynical And there is no way out of it

because a person we view negatively cannot do anything to

improve our impression of them We need to consider that

our perspective on what motivates people can either be a

source of comfort to us or a source of concern

Henryrsquos ultimate conclusion ldquoThese were just good people

doing a good thing and I thank them for itrdquo

In a study of adult self-esteem researchers found that people

who are happy with themselves take defeat and explain it

away treating it as an isolated incident that indicates nothing

about their ability People who are unhappy take defeat and

enlarge it making it stand for who they are and using it to

predict the outcomes of future events

ON FARM

Saturday 29th May - How Well Do You Know Your Snacks

On a cold and wintry Saturday afternoon Mrs Gill and Mrs

Dartnell organised a lsquoGame Timersquo with the students in

Residence

All students were invited to attend the Dining room to

participate after afternoon tea Out of the 34 students on

site there were three teams of six and one team of five

The first taste testing required the students to be blindfolded

Disposable masks were ideal for this exercise

Plastic spoons with the five secret ingredients were handed

to each to taste After a couple of minutes of debating

between themselves the blindfolds were removed and the

groups answers were entered on the Answer sheet

At the end the groups swapped their answer sheets with

another group for marking

They were surprized at the answer of the lsquoFive Ingredientsrsquo

being Oreo Cream biscuits broken up Pork crackle Cherry

tomatoes Sweet chilli sauce and melted marshmallows to

combine all together

The other categories were What flavour of Chip Of which

everyone guessed the six correct answers

Name the Cola Out of the five samples only one team had

two correct and the others only one correct

What flavour of Shape am I Two teams had all three correct

and two had only one

Am I sweet or unsweetened lemon drink and What brand

Only two teams managed to guess one correct out of the four

samples

The winning team with 14 points was Endangered Species

Team members were Aaron Schilling Patrick Murray Will

Nelson Tom Dolan Harry Dolan and Ben Hawley

With all the teams hotly debating each of the categories for

correct answers all had a great time enjoying themselves

The students were also surprised that they didnrsquot really know

their Cola drink varieties as well as they thought they did

Saturday 12th June - Can You Find Me

Saturday afternoon the call goes over the PA to all the

students who are in for the weekend for those who wish to

join in a ldquoFun Game Timerdquo 21 students gathered in the

Dining Room in teams of four and one of five

Mrs Gill and Mrs Dartnell had been busy creating a game that

involved the students for an hour in the glorious sunshine

Each team was given a two sided page with 20 questions

The rules were that there was a 30 minute time limit and the

area was within the Gym Duty Room and Farm Office Also

they were to keep a look out for four coloured plastic cones

scattered around the areas they were going to

First team back with the correct answers and within the 30

minutes would be the winners Teams were given a minute to

read through all the questions and then they were released

to search for the answers

Students were running everywhere and deep in discussions

between themselves eager to solve each question It was

great to see the excitement and enthusiasm from them all

A selection of the questions were

1 What is the name of the street the Principal lives on

Answer Julian Krieg Avenue

2 I am now a bird bath with a metal butterfly attached I

stand tall among other metal objects

Q1 What was my stand used for A Post Hole digger

Q2 Where am I A Farm Office

consent Phone calls will be made to those parents who have

still not returned the forms

This week students received their Country Week polo shirts

fixtures and rooming allocations Everything looks to be

locked in and we look forward to a very enjoyable last week

of term

Team members were Aaron Schilling Patrick Murray Will

they were to keep a look out for four coloured plastic cones

scattered around the areas they were going to

First team back with the correct answers and within the 30

minutes would be the winners Teams were given a minute to

read through all the questions and then they were released

to search for the answers

Trade Workshops will be running as per normal Please

contact me if you have any queries about this week

Semester 1 Reports

Staff are finishing off Semester 1 reports for all students At

the end of term the College will be trialling a new method of

distributing reports to families We will still be sending out

the traditional links to download a copy of the Semester 1

Reports as well as uploading each studentrsquos reports to

Compass where they will remain for the duration of the

studentrsquos time here at the College (the emailed link is only

available for 28 days) Each student will receive a Class and

a First Aid Course during Week 2 of next term This will be run

alongside the Defensive Driving Course The First Aid Course

will contribute towards studentrsquos WACE and is a required part

of other qualifications Can you please ensure that your son

daughter is here for that week as it becomes very difficult and

disruptive to fit them in to another course at a later date

A couple of reminders regarding leave -

when you mark ldquootherrdquo or ldquoother studentrdquo for the

transport for your child it is important that you name

this person in the notes section

can you please only mark parent in transport if you are

collecting your child and not if someone elsersquos parent

is collecting them

that you or whomever is collecting your child comes to

the window at the duty room and sees a staff member

a reminder to students to make sure they sign out and

see a staff member at the duty room before they leave

the College

Country Week is just around the corner we are all looking

forward to a great week of sports fun and making lasting

memories Organisation for our ball is underway and things

are looking great information and permission letters will be

out soon

Thank you

On Friday 4th June parents and students attended an information session presented by Ann Rintoul the Coordinator of the Road Safety and Drug Education Program

Many thanks to the parents who shared their thoughts and experiences with the students to illustrate how we may all become safer drivers

This week Year 10s have been looking at the composition of

plant and animal cells as part of our Biology Unit in

Science We did an experiment where we looked at the cells

of an onion using a microscope We discovered that by using

a very thin layer of onion and some dye we could see

individual cell walls and even some cell nuclei

September drop by and vote for one of the studentrsquos

projects in each area It is a great initiative to get the students

moving and they show great pride in presenting their

creations We look forward to seeing you all then

were very competitive winning the Hockey and AFL matches

Unhappy people take a situation in

which they are not sure and come to a

negative conclusion For example if they

arenrsquot certain why another person is

person must have a hidden agenda

Happy people take that same situation and guess the positive

possibility that is that the person is really nice

Henry is a seventy-year-old man who always had a good word

for his neighbours He lived modestly in a small home in the

country with only a wood stove for heat Over the years

Henry watched his home deteriorate steadily but he was too

old and had too little money to fix it up One of his

neighbours organised a group to virtually rebuild Henryrsquos

Any situation can be viewed as an act of selfishness if thatrsquos

In a study of adult self-esteem researchers found that people

who are happy with themselves take defeat and explain it

away treating it as an isolated incident that indicates nothing

about their ability People who are unhappy take defeat and

enlarge it making it stand for who they are and using it to

predict the outcomes of future events

The students were also surprised that they didnrsquot really know

they were to keep a look out for four coloured plastic cones

scattered around the areas they were going to

First team back with the correct answers and within the 30

minutes would be the winners Teams were given a minute to

read through all the questions and then they were released

Country Week

An email was sent out last week to the Parents Carers who

have not sent back their consent forms We encourage you to

look through your emails to give the consent and not risk

your student missing out on such events due to parent carer

consent Phone calls will be made to those parents who have

still not returned the forms

This week students received their Country Week polo shirts

fixtures and rooming allocations Everything looks to be

locked in and we look forward to a very enjoyable last week
