Vocations Information Update #2

As this new calendar year and Term is well under way, it is good and healthful spiritually to re-member to pray for our Diocesan Seminarians as they continue their studies in College. For many of our young men will be ordained as Priests and Deacons this year in June which will be a won-derful occasion for the Church and for themselves and their families. May we continue to pray for our local Priests, Deacons, Religious and Lay people who support us in our own Parishes and Faith Communities. May we pray for all those Priests we currently know and those whom we have known throughout our lives. The Priest who baptised us, celebrated Mass for us and with us, whom we have served with on the Altar and from whom we have had the privilege to receive the Most Holy Eucharist. Let us pray for those Priests we have approached to receive God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation as we have gone to Confession. The Priests who have baptised our family members, anointed our sick and who have presided at the funerals of loved ones. Here in School, we have been given the wonderful opportunity to have a special day of prayer and reflection for Vocations in February. On this day we shall be joining with the whole of the Arch-diocese of Birmingham as our School Community is on the Diocesan Calendar of Prayer. We are most blessed to have a lovely sacred space in our School Chapel and are able regularly to welcome the Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and adore Him in the Monstrance on the Altar. So after February Half Term, on Tuesday 26th February we will have our special time of prayer and reflection about what it means to have a Vocation and to consider what calling God may have for each one of us in our own lives. More details to follow shortly. May Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest Himself, bless, guide and strengthen our Sem-inarians, Deacons and their families as they continue in their unique Vocations. May we continue to keep all our Archdiocese of Birmingham Seminarians in our prayers and re-member them as they continue with their studies. St John Vianney, Pray for them. St Dominic Barberi, Patron of Our Archdiocese, Pray for us. St Jean Mary Vianney, Patron of Priests, Pray for us. St Maximillian Kolbe, Pray for us. St Catherine Laboure, Pray for us. Our Lady, Mother of the Church and Queen of Priests, Pray for us. As we shall be continuing to pray and discern as part of the special focus Year there will be regu-lar updates on our Twitter feeds @StBedesMiddle and @BedesRE. There will also be regular write-ups here in the newsletter. Do keep checking for new updates here and on the Website! “Do not forget that when the Lord calls, He also provides the necessary strength and grace to an-swer His call.” Saint John Paul II (Pope)

Peace Sunday

This coming Sunday, 20th January we celebrate “Peace Sunday.”

What does it really mean for us to have ‘peace’? The root of the word ‘peace’ may come from the

Hebrew word for peace which is ‘shalom’. Shalom means "soundness," "health," but has also

come to signify "prosperity," well-being in general, as well as all things are good in relation to the

connection between God and people. This week, let us pray for our world; that peace will come

and all people begin to live in harmony and tolerance.

Our prayer this week comes from Pax Christi.

Muslim, Jewish, Christian, prayer for peace

O God, you are the source of life and peace.

Praised be your name forever. We know it is you who turn

our minds to thoughts of peace. Hear our prayer in this time of crisis.

Your power changes hearts. Muslims, Christians and Jews

remember, and profoundly affirm, that they are followers of the one God,

Children of Abraham, brothers and sisters;

Enemies begin to speak to one another;

those who were estranged join hands in friendship;

nations seek the way of peace together. Strengthen our resolve to

give witness to these truths by the way we live.

Give to us: Understanding that puts

an end to strife; Mercy that quenches hatred, and

Forgiveness that overcomes vengeance.

Empower all people to live in your law of love. Amen.

Pax Christi

KS3 District Badminton Tournament

Last Friday, the Key Stage 3 girls took part in the District Badminton Tournament. This competition was for Year 8 and Year 9 pupils to qualify for the County Event in a few weeks time. The B team, made up of Emmie, Christina, Olivia and Lilly, played really well and managed to make the semi-final. Unfortunately, they then lost to a really strong Year 9 team from Tudor Grange, but they did themselves proud. The A team, made up of Lucy, Maud, Evah and Kiera, again played really well and managed to make the semi-finals also. They beat a good Woodrush team to make the final!

In the final they played Tudor grange and really started to play some good stuff! The girls won the final 4-1 in matches to claim the District title. The A team will now represent Redditch in the County round in a few weeks’ time.

Well done to all girls involved, especially as it was a Year 8/9 competition.

Year 7 District Hockey

On Tuesday, our Year 7 boys took part in the District Hockey Competition. Unfortunately, due to light and attendance issues, the team started off slowly and struggled to initially gel as a team, losing their first game against Walkwood 3-0. They started much better in the second game and goalkeeper Will made some brilliant saves, unfortunately, despite this, we lost 1-0. In the final game against Birchensale, the team tried their absolute best and showed signs of some quality hockey. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to beat a strong Birchensale side, meaning they finished 4th overall. Well done to all the boys involved; James, Oliver, Rio, Kuba, Jakub, Lewis and Will!

On Wednesday it was the turn of the Year 8's in the District Hockey Competition. Again, the boys struggled in the first game to gel as a team, but managed to secure a 1-0 victory against Walkwood. After a slight shift in positions, the team improved and were able to compete well against a solid Woodfield team, ending the game with a 1-1 draw. The last game, against Birchensale, was a tough test and St Bede’s battled hard but kept getting caught on the break, losing to the stronger team 5-0.

St Bede’s finished 3rd place but tied on points with second so were unlucky not to get a medal. Thank you to Jacob, Santos, Will, Dominic, Bartosz, David, Finley, Oliwer and Tom for all their efforts!

Year 8 District Hockey

First round of the Year 7 girls National Football Cup got off to a flying start for St Bedes. We didn’t have to travel far, St John’s, Bromsgrove. The girls raced ahead in the first half to a 4-0 lead. There was no letting up in the second half as St Bede’s kept on the attack and, despite injuries, secured a 7-0 victory.

Well done girls! What a brilliant performance.

Next round, away at Sandwell Academy on Thursday 24 January.

Earbud Headphones

Earbud headphones in zipper bag or small case as part of recommended equipment

In order to continuously improve our provision for the children at St Bede's we would now like to

inform you that 'earbud' style headphones (compatible with a computer) in a zipper bag or case

(clearly marked with your child’s name) are now a 'suggested' piece of equipment for all children.

As well as developing independence, the headphones will be useful in some lessons to support your

child's learning, whilst ensuring that highest standards of hygiene are adhered too. Your child will

be responsible for their own headphones whilst they are in school.

Random Club

At Random Club –pupils were given the choice to decorate potatoes or biscuits. They used sharpies or icing sugar.

Lexia

Some of our pupils have been identified as requiring our Lexia programme, this is specifically designed to help them improve with their reading comprehension, grammar and spelling skills.

Research shows that pupils who engage with the Lexia programme at home make rapid progress within these key areas.

Ideally this should be a minimum of three sessions of at least twenty minutes per week at home.

This will be in addition to the weekly intervention sessions they already have during the school day.

A Guide on how to use / log into Lexia is shown below.
